Pretty much, that and a few exposes on urban poverty was "the news from America" on 60s Soviet TV. It made them feel morally superior to America. A little token celebration of the few Russian/Cuban, Russian/Angolan, etc romantic relationships as a counter-example to the US Southerners going batshiat helped sell Soviet-alignment in Cuba, Africa, South America, SE Asia, etc.

I hate this state sometimes. I figure 20 years or so down the road these laws will be ruled unconstitutional and it'll be legal everywhere. Quit trying to legislate your bigotry and hatred under the guise of religion.

He said Brunstetter reluctantly acknowledged that she had used the term "Caucasian" and then repeated the statement previously attributed to her, but substituted the pronoun "we" for "Caucasian. Nance said Brunstetter insisted there was nothing racial about her remarks, but could not explain why she used the term "Caucasian."

If it makes anyone in North Carolina feel any better, Wisconsin did something very similiar a couple of years ago: gay marriage was already illegal, so they also had to make it double illegal by passing a constitutional amendment. 65 percent of the voters voted to make gay marriage super illegal. The facist Milwaukee suburbs and the more conservative rural counties voted yes with Madison and some rural liberal counties voting no. Milwaukee barely voted no, with the black churches coming out strongly against gay marraige. The point is, this nonsense is hardly new, and a purple state came out strongly against gay marriage.
