Gomezing - decidedly less fun than Clarksoning.

Also also, on a topic-at-hand not: wouldn't it make more sense for them to just bury Gomez in Hamilton (à-la Redden), rather than buy him out?

As it stands, his cap hit would be $7.4M for each of the next 2 years, while they only actually pay him $10M total. If they buy him out, they pay him $6.7M over the next 4 years, and save $3.8M, 2.8M, -1.7M and -1.7M against the cap over the next 4 years ("-" indicates an actual cap hit, as opposed to savings).

Why not just spend the extra $3.3M in cash, bury him in the AHL, and save the full cap hit? I don't think this is a Souray situation, where they don't want him near their young players b/c they think he's poison. By all accounts, he's a great teammate (heck, he wears the C, doesn't he?). Seems like a no-brainer, unless there's a by-law preventing it...

Good move in the sense that we should have done it last year. Bergevin is 1 for 1 with me so far.

Why pay over $3 million and suffer a cap hit that prevents signing any more talent for 2 more years? Fans in Montreal are getting impatient

So how does this work exactly..... is he essentially free to go elsewhere, or just sit at home and collect his reduced salary for the next 3 years?

Why not just bury him in the minors and avoid the cap hit? Gomez doesn't belong in the NHL anyway.

Pretty sure AHL player salaries don't count against the cap. Gomez doesn't have a no-move clause, so it's all set to happen. Not sure why they're talking about a buy-out, unless they really:

a) don't want to spend the extra cash
b) don't want him on their AHL roster

kab: So how does this work exactly..... is he essentially free to go elsewhere, or just sit at home and collect his reduced salary for the next 3 years?

As far as I know, the freedom to play anywhere you can sign, immediately, is the reward for taking 2/3 of what would normally be a guaranteed salary (over double the years). See Commodore, Mike, or Souray, Sheldon. Heck, Commodore actually made more this season from his CBJ buyout cheque than he did in actual salary (DET/TB).

Marshmallow Jones: Bob Gainey - so dumb he makes Glen Sather look smart.

Careful, Slats took on Drury AND Redden, so I don't know about that....

He's not a terrible player, but that is one of the worst contracts I've ever seen in the NHL.

2012-05-02 04:34:35 PM
He'll go to another team next year and score 30G. Send him to the Coyotes, put him on a line w/ Torres and market it en espanol to Phoenix's large ethnic majority.

2012-05-02 04:51:28 PM
For any of you Cubbies fans out there, this move is known as the Theo.

1. sign a bad player
2. overpay him
3. Find a more effective replacement player at a fraction of a fraction of the cost
4. find some other team to take the bad player.
5. Other team trades you the cash equivalent of the replacement player
5. Dead Money on books for years
6. formerly overpaid player is a bargain for new team and overperforms, possibly becoming MVP of championship series

2012-05-02 04:56:33 PM
Hey, I'm terrible at hockey too!

...oh please oh please....

2012-05-02 05:24:10 PM
Yes he will be free to go wherever he wants and get to pocket the MTL money.

This is a stupid move because he should be in the AHL, his salary will not count at all against the NHL cap if he is there AND you are restricting his movement.

Here is what happens. He takes the 10 mil (or whatever it is) and signs with a championship caliber team (detroit, nash, phx) that could use some extra oomph and veteran leadership, for the minimum. he has a decent season for a 30something and is now a bargain.

Do you know what the song they use for the intro is? I dig it

I never understood why he was so highly sought after. The guys never been a goal scorer, he averaged around 15 goals per season prior to being signed by Montreal. He was a steady assist guy but you don't pay a center that kind of money for farking assists.

Oh, man, they just talked about this on a recent episode (though I can't remember the name). Wait, do you mean the intro music that plays for a few seconds after all the effects and voice-overs, or the carnival-lounge synth and snare tune that closes every show?

If the latter, I'm pretty sure they talked about that Friday, after their interview with the Iraq veteran guy who was there to advocate for his 'help troops re-integrate into society after deployment' cause... April 27 here.

If the former, my GoogleFu has proven weak today... though they seem pretty interactive on Twitter, so I'm sure if you hit them (or even Elena) during downtime, they'd have an answer for you.

It's pretty much b/c GMs can't read a stat sheet: TSN

Gomez put up 19 G (and 50 A!) in his rookie campaign, on a Cup-winning team. After that, 10-16 G, for 60 +/- 10 pts, all on 6-9% shooting, for a solid 4 years. Lockout hits, so he plays in the ECHL w/ the Alaska Aces and just spends the whole time setting everybody up (and I'm presuming no one dared hit him).

So, he comes out of what must've felt, wear-and-tear-wise, like a vacation year, where all he did was skate circles around everyone and set up sub-NHL-calibre pros. Rejoins the "New NHL" as a 25/26-yo (read: prime hockey years), and proceeds to either pick corners or get bounces that DOUBLE his shooting %. So, he pots 33 G and 51 A and everyone thinks he's the second coming of Pat LaFontaine. Even when he drops back to 13G for 60 pts on ~5% (career low, at the time) the following season, no one said 'Hmm.... maybe last year was an outlier, and not this year'. Certainly not the Rangers, who gave him $51M.

So, yeah, outside of the post-lockout year, and last year w/ Montreal, he was the same guy. If you're paying him Krejci money (~$5M), no one's too upset, but that 7 really looks bad when the points don't edge up toward triple-digits.

This year, sure, he sucked out loud, but so did everyone around him.

/I'm not quite sure what I'm trying to say with all that, aside from the fact that both Slats and Gainey were dumb to not recognize that 15+50 was the best you could hope for with Gomez (and even that wouldn't've satisfied the Habs faithful, I don't think...)
