I saw Jeannie's belly button once but I had to look away....I started turning into stone.

Wow, I never realized that Larry Hagman was such a tool.

Larry Hagman acting like a drunk, irrational man-child? Color me surprised.

2012-05-02 09:34:53 AM
Often, when he didn't like a particular show's script, Hagman would throw up all over the I Dream of Jeannie set. Once, when he felt upset about the latest script, he urinated over the entire set, furniture and all.

Damn. Charlie Sheen only wished he had been this bat-shait crazy.

Anybody else get a real 'high-school book report' vibe from that? That being said, yeah, Hagman was a legendary boozehound.

Barbara Eden has always been hot. Hagman has always been a POS, especially in real life.

2012-05-02 09:57:12 AM
Jeannie was the pinnacle of rerun hotness -- as long as that day's Batman didn't feature Julie Newmar as Catwoman.

2012-05-02 10:06:15 AM
What I remember best abut the show was how Maj. Nelson always tried to maintain a veneer of normalcy, and how that contrasts with what a "normel" person would do.

You're a good-looking guy. You find a bottle and free a hot-ass genie. (Hot ass-genie?) She calls you "Master," isn't very bright, and loves you. And has the power to grant your every wish. Why would you ever even be found again? Would you ever care about being "normal"? Dafuq?

karnal: I saw Jeannie's belly button once but I had to look away....I started turning into stone.

In one of her biographies, Barbara Eden says that she used to tell people who asked if she had a belly button, "Yes, and you can see it for a nickel."

Then in the 1980s -- due to inflation -- she raised the price to a dime.

A GIS for Barbara Eden does not disappoint. Boobies even.

Hmmm, apparently the boobies are fake. Sorry 'bout that.

Hagman may have been an ass but you can't deny his work on IDOJ belongs in the pantheon of great comedic sitcom performances, right up there with Jerry Stiller (Seinfeld), John Cleese (Fawlty Towers) or Steve Landesberg (Barney Miller). His timing and acumen for high energy physical comedy was top-notch.

That Major Nelson guy, he was a putz... Jeannie, Honey, why don't you make your tongue about 6 feet long and lick the back of my balls from across the room?

Holy crap, why am I just now learning that the dude from IDOJ and JR from Dallas are the same guy?

When she was very young, she was in an episode of The Andy Griffith Show called "The Manicurist" - every man in Mayberry lined up out the door to get their nails done by her. Of course their wives weren't happy about it and made the poor girl miserable.

She was indeed quite gorgeous.

FTFA: During the show's original casting, Sheldon had looked only at dark, ethnic, exotic girls to play the lead character, a genie named Jeannie

Nothiong at all wrong with Barbara Eden, but can you imagine an Eartha Kitt genie in 1964, then having them married in season 5?

2012-05-02 11:02:45 AM
Short version: Barbara Eden is cool and Larry Hagman is (or at least was) a psychopath.

/I didn't include that she's hot because you already knew that.
//I don't include that he's the son of a more talented celebrity because that's not in the article.

Depending how much he changed in his "Dallas" years, the "Who Shot JR" craze makes the death of Sheen's character on "Two and a Half Men" pale by comparison.

The guy pointing a TV camera at you might get uncomfortable, after a while.

Considering this made the collective head of the South asplode:

I dunno if I buy the story that the I Dream of Jeannie show concept came first, and that numerous other exotic actresses were auditioned before 'settling' on Barbara Eden.

Barbara Eden co-starred with Tony Randall in the 1964 movie The Brass Bottle, in which the couple finds a genie in their table lamp (played by Burl Ives). At one point in the film, the genie conjures an outfit for Barbara Eden that is very similar to her 'Jeannie' costume.

I'd just always assumed that some Hollywood TV execs walked out of the theater saying, "we should put her in that outfit every week! .. on television!!"

DNRTFA, but I remember reading an interview with Hagman where he stated he was really experimenting heavily with acid during those days.
Cracks me up now when I see an episode, it just makes so much more sense.

I don't think Larry Hagman would deny that he was a giant asshole when he was a drunk. Years later he would get sober. He tried to help Keith Moon escape his path to self destruction when Moon lived in L.A., they were good friends, but alas.
