For crying out loud. The way it was written and the reactions of the people make you think they found a bomb or something.

"Everyone stand back and take cover! We are attempting to uproot the pot plant! Please keep a safe distance!"

Well they were doing to dose the water supply with LSD... but between general Tampa weirdness and the GOP's natural paranoia, it was feared that no one would notice.

Wow. Just wow.

They even tested it to see if it was positive for THC. Your tax dollars at work Tampa. You must be so proud.

A marijuana plant was found growing inside a city planter in downtown Tampa on Tuesday, according to police.

"The plant tested positive for THC," Capt. David Goodman said.

THC is the active chemical in marijuana.

So police believe the plant was marijuana.

Marijuana has a chemical in it called THC.

Police tested for THC in the plant.

They believe the plant is marijuana.

I question how Citizen Grimes knows how to spot a marijuana plant. Very suspicious.

I hate this new style of printing one sentence per paragraph.

But I guess it is needed for the idiots in Florida.

They cant read two sentences on the same line.

But it is good to know that the one and only pot plant in Tampa was found and destroyed before the Republicans arrive.

Because everyone knows that Republicans are allergic to pot and no Republican has ever used it.

2012-05-02 11:23:23 AM
Why did they need to test it? it looks like weed and it's on city property just pull it up and throw it out.

It is funny how they refuse to say somebody purposely planted it and then bring up cross pollination as a possible theory to how the plant got there.

Never make this assumption about a Florida resident, especially a Tampa resident. He could be a fifth or six generation Cuban-American. besides, this idiocy is happening all over the country. I blame forgetting how to read anything but a text message.

Hippies? Are you kidding me? I haven't seen a REAL hippie since 1971. The counter-culture movement was rather brief. After that, everyone just thought it was cool to grow their hair out and wear weird clothes. It was just another fad the kiddies thought made them uber-cool.

Oh and that anti-war movement? In reality, it was an anti-draft movement. Don't believe it? How many 18-30 year olds took to the street to massively protest the Iraq and Afghanistan wars?

Our DARE officer passed 3 joints around the classroom so we'd know what to look for if we ever encountered the wacky weed. He told us if he didn't get them all back nobody would leave the classroom till he found it.

He got 4 joints back.

"I am a little surprised that no-one has noticed that this isn't a tree. A regular tree or a regular plant," said Michelle Gilbert."

Um, it is a regular plant. It is not man made nor does it require ultra specific environs to grow in. If you believe in god you could say that he (all true god believers believe its a he and that men are superior because it is in there holy book, or at least pretend/ignore the parts of their religion they don't like) considers it an opus of sorts due to its hardiness and extreme proliferation around the world.

If you don't believe in god then you don't have to ask if its a regular plant because you are not stupid enough to question this.

She meant legal, but is too ignorant to recognize that "regular" does not mean "legal".

I guess the real problem, then, is that the boomers, who watched the hippies on tv and probably secretly wanted to be them, instead went straight establishment and completely buttraped the country. I dunno, now I'm just depressed. If we were a rational society, we wouldn't criminalize something that a sizable minority (conservatively) do on a regular basis which doesn't hurt anyone but themselves, if they even hurt themselves. If we were a rational society, we wouldn't build ever more prisons and hire ever more policemen all while expecting crime to go down. But we aren't a rational society. I used to believe that technological advances would lead us to rational behavior, but I've since realized that it's not happening - instead, idiocracy is the far more likely outcome. This is why I'm a nihilist.

yert: I had a buddy in college that used to plant pot seeds in planters everywhere he went.

I'd bet someone doing something similar is responsible for this. I used to save pot seeds from way back when I still bought pot that had seeds. I have finally come to the conclusion that I'll probably never start my own garden and even if I do it would be better to get a clone of something of better quality. So now I have a million seeds and I think the only way to get rid of them is to throw them out of my car every time I pass a police station.

"I suppose there could be a thousand explanations as to how it got there," he said. "Whether it's through pollination or somebody decided to actually intentionally plant something there."

I'm no plant expert but I don't think you can just pollinate a plant that isn't there to begin with. Maybe a bird could eat a whole seed and poop it out, but I still think someone just thought it would be funny to drop a few seeds in a planter near a cop station.

Plants don't need to be pollinated to grow from a seed. Only to produce more seeds. In general, you don't even need a seed to make more plants either. You can take a cutting of a plant and grow a clone of the original from the cutting.

untaken_name: I guess the real problem, then, is that the boomers

The hippies were boomers, boomers who attempted to change social injustices and expose corruption in government. They succeeded on many fronts. They failed on many others. The ones who came after them were posers and nothing more. Even some of the hippies were only hippies because it was fashionable. You have to remember that, in their day, hippies were despised by the vast majority of the country. They were dirty America-haters, dope-heads, and sex fiends. Some of them were beaten to death just because of how they looked. A few years later, the rednecks who would beat a hippie to within an inch of his life was doing everything in his power to look and act like a hippie.

And today, 45 years after the Summer of Love, 20-somthings, who have never actually seen a hippie and know zero about the counter-culture movement, have decided that they need to hate them, too. As if they didn't have enough to hate already....

Interestingly enough some bird seed does contain hemp seeds.

yert: Interestingly enough some bird seed does contain hemp seeds.

Several varieties of hemp, most of which are at best mildly psychoactive, grow wild in several parts of the country. During the Reagan Administration, the DEA had a hemp eradication effort in some parts of Texas, where a native cannabis grew wild. No one smoked it, but they spent tens-of-millions of dollars trying to eradicate the evil weed.

Then there's the old trick of attempting to hide your pot crop from law enforcement's aircraft by growing it among fields of other crops. That doesn't always work out so well.
