Key element missing from subby's equation. You always need a baddie to fight, and the USA is running out of nations to hate on a diplomatic level. I know the opposite is true, like the entire world hates the USA, but as I said, this is on a diplomatic level. I should imagine Rambo will need to start taking on private armies that just happen to be sheltering somewhere controversial and actually have nothing to do with the government of that country. Action films were easier to compose in the old Cold War days.

The rumored idea was that he'd be going after Mexican human traffickers. That would make sense considering that the last movie ended with him at the family homestead in Arizona (or was it New Mexico? A border state, regardless).

Meh. Set him loose on Al Qaeda / The Taliban. You could make it especially poignant by having him fight someone whom he helped in Rambo II.

Failing that, you could also go back to the old standby that Hollywood uses when it doesn't want to offend anybody, even though they haven't been any kind of a serious threat in over 60 years: Nazis.

/Seriously, Hollywood, when was the last time Nazis did anything significant? Yeah, 1945.

Drug cartels. That gives both a private army to fight that everyone hates and frees up several locations in Central and South America, not to mention incredibly sadistic prisoner torture scenes.

Problem solved.

I heard about this script a couple of years back. Remember how Rambo 4 ended with Rambo walking down the road towards his dad's farm in Arizona? Well, Rambo's father has long since passed away and the house is now owned by a Mexican family who used to work for Rambo's dad. Rambo befriends the family working there, and their daughter goes down to Mexico to celebrate her 16th birthday party, and gets kidnapped and held for ransom by the Northern Cartels. So Rambo goes down to Mexico on a mission to rescue the girl.

But last I'd heard the script was tossed out because Sly wanted to focus exclusively on the Expendables franchise. Personally, I think that Rambo 4 was a good way to end the franchise.

On the scale of how good a Rambo movie could possibly be, I was pleasantly surprised by Rambo 4.
As a lad I saw First Blood and Rambo: First Blood Pt II too many times. If there's another one, there needs to be another scene where a bad guy empties his clip shooting at Rambo and missing, then Rambo slowly aims and shoots an explosive tipped arrow at the bad guy. It's always better when the bad guy explodes.

I liked that ending, too, but then again, I think the Rocky franchise would have worked better as only 2 movies.

There was definitely a turning point with Stallone after First Blood and the first 2 Rocky movies, where I think he wanted to go from serious actor to matinee idol. I don't blame him, considering he was near poverty up until those movies came out, but he definitely decided to sacrifice art for money.

That's why the Rocky franchise and the later Rambo movies later turned more cartoonish than their predecessors. And also why they made a farkton more money.

The timing and the storyline come into play, too. The 3 you mention have Stallone as the down on his luck underdog character fighting and inspiring American audiences with athletics and a Vietnam hangover. That was a huge 70's/80's crowd pleaser. The next few Rocky movies rely on Talia Shire for inspriation. That hurts.
Maybe I'm wrong, but it wasn't until Copland that Stallone started trying again?

Actually, up until Platoon, movies even remotely associated with Vietnam were a huge risk for studios and were rarely crowd pleasers. (For insight, check out Oliver Stone's biography, where he talks about Platoon taking 10 years to get made and Born on the Fourth of July taking 15 years.) In 1982, people were still pissed off about that war.

The thing I'm looking at are the logic problems between the first few movies and the ones that came after.

Just looking at First Blood, I'm amazed that Rambo even turned into a franchise. FFS, the underlying theme for the whole movie was PTSD, which Rambo doesn't seem to have anymore in the sequels.

Same thing with the Rocky flicks after 3. During the second, the character was warned that fighting again could lead to permanent vision problems or even blindness. Yet, in the 3rd and 4th, Stallone does not even need a pair of reading glasses and is in better shape in his late 30s than he was 6 years earlier.

You are right about Copland, though. That seemed to be his first movie in a long time where he had to do any acting.

I always thought Stallone was not afraid to try new stuff. Some of it worked, lot of it did not. But he was always willing to give it a go.

I was pleasantly surprised by how good Rambo and Rocky Balboa was. I would rather he just walks away and leaves both franchises on a high note. But if he takes his time and makes a good film, I will watch it.

Pretty much this. Rambo 4 ended with the character coming full circle and completing the journey he started in First Blood. The circle is closed, anything else now would seem needless. It would be like another Rocky after the pitch perfect way Rocky Balboa brought the character to a finale.

"John Rambo" was the working title, it's actually just "Rambo"

Giving us the most convoluted movie naming scheme:
First Blood
Rambo: First Blood Part 2
Rambo 3
