This was an old half mascot that they retired years ago that they decided would be more kid friendly than a giant painted angry guy carrying a spear, so now they have this guy for smaller events with lots of kids (Softball, downtown festivals). They certainly didn't replace Osceola with him.

Yep, that's about the long and short of it.

Anyway, Osceola isn't considered a mascot.

But I got invited to go to an FSU game a couple of years ago, and I have to admit... seeing Chief Osceola plant that freakin' spear was EEEEEE-lectric.

That's a good question. The entire concept all the way through execution is coordinated with and approved by the Seminole Nation.

The support of the Seminole Tribe is what is saving FSU and the lack of tribal support did us in at the University of Illinois. The symbol (not a mascot) Chief Illiniwek did not represent any real Native American Tribe, so they (the very vocal PC minority) were able to put enough pressure (through some very unscrupulous means) on the administration and athletic department to get rid of him. There is still some serious resentment over the whole thing. Most of the main players have moved on. We did not have and still don't have a mascot.

I hope for FSU's sake that this in not the first step in phasing out your Chief.

I will happily take the pony mascot for sports nobody cares about over a mascot that looks like somebody in a meth lab took a break to crossbreed Donald Duck with Andy Rooney.

This is where "Illini" not being an Indian tribe saves us. We are the Illini as in the people of the state of Illinois. There is no such indian tribe.

It is all too bad. As a white American, I though the whole Chief thing was very cool and respectful, and was held great honor. It is a shame that Native Americans could not have worked with the U of I and use the Chief to promote native American issues and awareness. I guess my filters are too great to see the real issues.

As a furry, that is NOT a fursuiter. No fursuiter in their right mind would be caught in such a cheap, horrible getup and I've seen photos of some pretty terrible fursuits.
