How can you steal that much money from a town that small and not get caught immediately? There must have been other people involved.

She was released on her own recognizance on April 18

Steal $53 million, walk on out. Steal a soda, lock up until the court finds the time to see you.

lelio: How on earth do you steal that much, buy a bunch of horses and a $2.1M mobile home and not draw attention to yourself? Maybe her family was already wealthy, but didn't anyone wonder how she can afford all this on a salary?

It sounds like she started this up right after her divorce and her mom dying. She probably started off by claiming it was estate and alimony money, and by the time she got totally obnoxious, she was able to say that it was all from investments/winning at competitions. Bonus: Once you're rich, it's less likely anyone will accuse you of stealing. Why would you steal from the city? You're rich and don't need the money!

/The auditing firm should have caught this years ago.

Nana's Vibrator: A public official from Dixon, IL who squanders taxpayers out of millions of dollars?
At this rate, in 25 years she'll somehow become a beloved symbol of the Republican Party

/At least it was millions and not trillions

kvinesknows's biographic link mentions that she always voted in Republican primary elections (when she voted in the 1980's and 1990's; she hadn't voted at all since 1998).

2012-05-02 02:18:16 PM
FYI. She was in an appointed position, not an elected one. Also, audits were done yearly by 2 independent firms, one would collect the data, the other to verify the data. Bad data in = bad data out. This coont had allegedly provided fictitious invoices between Dixon IL (not CA) and the state to cover her tracks. The big mistake in her procedure was when the bank statement arrived for her secret account and she was not there to intercept it.
Btw - born and raised in Dixon, relatively normal people there, not backwards, bible thumping, nor upitity, just farkin normal.

malaktaus: How can you steal that much money from a town that small and not get caught immediately?

small? it's 6.3 square miles. someone here mentioned how much each of those 15k plus people paid in 20 years but that's tax money. money that could have been saved, or done dixon some real good. or been wasted in other ways.

and you know full well that the fire sale of her assets is going to net ten cents on the dollar.

relcec: the chinese have the correct policy regarding government corruption. there can't be many things more damaging to good governance than a populace that is fully aware that the societal leaders and protectors are just there to suck their blood.
the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
cut off her head with a spork from taco bell and and fling it into lake Michigan with a giant trebuchet.

Not that it doesn't get played for evil, but there's a reason that China (no farking tolerance for it-formally anyhow) is absolutely lapping India (100% de rigeur, all the way up and down the line) on the growth train.

bim1154: Evil Mackerel: bim1154: qorkfiend: Democrat or Republican? I must know before I can contribute to this thread.

This is Illinois where even Republicans learn the bad habits of Democrats.

This is Illinois where even the pot calls the kettle black.

I've lived in this state for 37 years and don't consider myself neither party. I've seen the worst from both parties, but it's Illinois overall has been run by the Democrats and it does have the reputation as one of the top corrupt states. Citation shouldn't be hard to find if you want to look for it yourself.

Massachusetts is similar. Corrupt & Democrat. The easy guess would be to associate the higher number of programs and higher budgets in a Democrat-run system with the attraction of corrupt people to large sums of money and access to power.

Being from that area (I still have lots of family out there) I can't believe that no one caught on. Dixon is a town where everyone knows your business before you do. I'd like to know who she paid off to look the other way.

Corruption tends to be tied to political machinations more than any particular party. Illinois and Mass have well entrenched political machines that are historically Democrat.

Plenty of other states have Republican led corruption and favoritism.

From this article:

Crundwell's property at 1679 U.S. Route 52 is valued at $468,192. She acquired the property in 1986 from the estate of her mother, Caroline, who died 2 years earlier.

She built horse stables there in 1997.

In 2000, the house on the property, which was 20 years old then, underwent a major expansion, more than doubling the living space to 3,484 square feet. The project included an in-ground pool.

Before the stables and home expansion, the property was valued at $104,000.

For her 88-acre property at 1556 Red Brick Road, she built a 19,584-square-foot horse barn in 2006. It included storage space, stalls, an arena and an office.

The property is now worth $379,173, according to the assessor's records.

Crundwell bought the property from Richard A. Humphrey Sr., a family member, in 2002. She paid $540,000 - paying in halves in 2002 and 2011.

In 2007, Crundwell bought a 43-acre property at 1403 Dutch Road from Shirley Levan. She paid $311,000.

She had a two-story house built there in 2010, removing an older house to make way for construction.

The assessor has determined its value at $270,975.

The county clerk's records showed that Crundwell obtained a $240,000 mortgage for the Dutch property.

Crundwell also owns 81 acres of farmland near Nachusa Road and Interstate 88. That land includes no buildings.

the FBI revealed that she had used city money to buy several vehicles, including a $2.1 million luxury motor home; to pay $2.5 million on her personal American Express card; and to buy more than $339,000 in jewelry.

She has hundreds of horses, industry insiders say.

In 2004, she made $57,000 a year, according to openthebooks.com. Now she makes $80,000 - a 40 percent increase in 8 years.

She make $80K. And has all this other stuff. And nobody noticed? Not ever the IRS? Seriously?

Philip Francis Queeg: Gulper Eel: I didn't even know Illinois politicians outside of Chicago knew how to steal that much.

[bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com image 308x440]

Graft is bipartisan and state wide in Illinois. We're very egalitarian.

No kidding. Downstaters like to point the finger at Chicago all the time, but nobody likes to mention George Ryan, or big corporations like Archer Daniels Midland that have actually had a Matt Damon movie made about how corrupt they are.
