Yeah, i'm kind of with you on this one. Being in public service should carry are heavy weight when it comes to crime. Or at least a sliding scaling depending on what power you have.

The Chinese have it down pat for this kind of thing. She would've been shot two days after it was discovered.

Can you post it? Or at least give dimensions? Because I'm still in the dark as to how you could spend that much money on that little space.

In all seriousness - this is why you never have one person who manages the books. Make sure your comptroller/admin/office manager/whatever takes vacation twice a year, and someone else audits the books.

Didn't John Madden travel around in one that expensive while he was a football announcer because he didn't like to fly?

It's all about talking. She probably talked and acted the part of a insanely rich person, so when people saw her with all of these new and expensive toys they didn't think twice about it. But the question of how nobody noticed this money missing from the town still needs to be answered.

My wife works at a bank. She got a transfer initiated by a VP for about $400,000. The amount wasn't in question but the process wasn't followed and not all the paper work was filled out. It is her job to follow up on transfers that don't follow procedure. She asked the VP about status of the paper work. The VP replied, "I can sign off on checks for that amount" and left it at that. Since my wife needs her job, she had to let it go.

If you're high enough in the organization then you can steal in plain sight and no one will question you for fear of their job.

I've lived in this state for 37 years and don't consider myself neither party. I've seen the worst from both parties, but it's Illinois overall has been run by the Democrats and it does have the reputation as one of the top corrupt states. Citation shouldn't be hard to find if you want to look for it yourself.

This is true, but is it because Democrats are inherently corrupt(ing), cities are inherently corrupt(ing), or that Illinois is inherently corrupt(ing)?

I think it's the second... :)

Federal prosecutors allege Crundwell created phony invoices that she characterized as being from the state of Illinois. She then allegedly put that money from a city account into another account, which she repeatedly used for personal use.

In Illinois, this would seem incredibly easy to do. As stupid and corrupt as the state is, someone could really profit from the big bad state government.

"Here's an invoice from the State. They're taxing us for wearing those baggy director's pants."

"But we don't wear baggy director's pants."

"It's a tax for not wearing them."

Next year

"We need to pay our city baggy pants taxes."

"But the tax is for not wearing them. We are all wearing baggy pants. Dixon is famous for wearing baggy pants."

"They changed the law. The tax is for wearing them now."

THIS

My sister worked at a Tag Agency (it's where you pay the tax and get a tag for a car on Oklahoma). She got a friend a job working there as the accountant. The friend worked there for 5 years and never missed a day. Not one sick day, not one day of vacation. The owner of the Tag Agency rewarded her with an all-expensive paid trip to Vegas. The friend didn't want to go, but the owner insisted she take off the time and go. After being gone for one day, they knew why she didn't want to go. After the investigation was completed, they charged her with stealing over $500k over the 5 years.

This is why in a lot of organizations it is mandatory that people in accounting and auditing type positions have to take a mandatory week off every year. and during this week they cannot be contacted about work or have any access to any of the company's systems.

Add marble from Greek ruins and rare woods chopped from the heart of the rain forest. Buff the chrome with unicorn tears. Make the undercarriage out of platinum. You get the idea.

Anything can be made expensive, and often is for the benefit of wealthy people who feel the need to light their money on fire.

This is the sort of thing that really makes you question whether the payoff is worth it. Sure you end up with a lot more money than you would have had anyway, but protecting that secret is consuming your life. You're afraid to take sick days or vacations, you probably spend significant portions of your days and nights worrying about discovery, and I can basically guarantee that you have frequent "scares" when someone almost discovers what you're up to. The toll this would take on your mental and physical health really doesn't seem worth it, especially for $500k.

My company had me at an office years ago where once a year they would have an independent auditing firm come in and check out the books. About 6 people would sent up in the big meeting room and the accounting department would bring the records in for the year. There were never any major discrepancies, but I know it annoyed the accounting dept to no end.

Why didn't people notice? I've read in another article that there was an assumption that she was making her money off the horse shows. forget the city/state/federal audits
what we need is independent year PUBLIC audits of all government employees and contractors and everyone hiding behind shell companies. You want your privacy? ok, but you cant take government money. You want government money? EVERYONE gets to know exactly how much money you have, property, EVERYTHING. period. Hide shiat? go to prison.

the idea that government employees should have a right to privacy is silly. and it is how this kind of shiat happens.
