The former financial officer for the small northern Illinois city of Dixon stole millions of dollars more than originally thought

True, but at a slower rate, so in theory it had less impact on the city.

How on earth do you steal that much, buy a bunch of horses and a $2.1M mobile home and not draw attention to yourself? Maybe her family was already wealthy, but didn't anyone wonder how she can afford all this on a salary?

And I feel bad when I get home and find yet another pen from the office. How do I go about having my moral compass removed?

Never mind, I forgot I was on Fark. It's already compromised.

Yeah, i'm kind of with you on this one. Being in public service should carry are heavy weight when it comes to crime. Or at least a sliding scaling depending on what power you have.

Still kinda funny though. "We accuse you of stealing tons of money!" "Hahah! I stole way more than that!"

hmm... she divorced her husband in absentia and... no one knows anything about him other them him being mentioned in a brothers obituary.

AND it was pretty much after that when she started stealing.. .... I wonder...... DID hubby actually leave or did he catch her with someone else from the "city".. and was murdered by them both? And then she blackmailed the person which would explain her quick rise into this position.

She started small. But those horse competitions just kept getting harder to win. She needed to have the best of everything. Sure the city had to freeze salaries and missed some payments and the kids couldn't have their city pool, but isn't it worth it for those nice trophies?

I still can't wrap my head around this. If you do the math, she stole about $165 for every man, woman, and child in that town, per year, for twenty years before she got caught. It adds up to over $13,000 for a family of four during the lifetime of her grifting. How the hell is that even possible?

Even poor people in the ghetto know better than to overly flaunt illegal gains. Drug dealers drive pimped out $2,000 1994 Cadillacs because a $38,000 2012 base model would draw a lot of attention from authorities. The state only sees Blue Book value and not the $53,000 worth of pimping that is done to the car.

It's pretty easy if you control both the Treasury and the office that's supposed to be keeping tabs on the Treasury.

She voted Republican most of her life but she stopped voting in 1998. So I'd say "Republican". Might as well toss in "1%er", too.

Enjoy.

At which point she hauls out the ledger and starts going through it line-by-line until the City Council's eyes gloss over and they say "Oh, well as long as nothing bad is happening."

The assumption that tarring and feathering was a brutal form of torture seems to be disguised by the often humorous manner in which it is presented in literature, where the punishment inflicts public humiliation and discomfort, not serious injury. This is hard to understand if the tar used were the material now most commonly referred to as tar, which has a high melting point. However, the tar used then was pine tar, a completely different substance, with a much lower melting point. Some varieties were liquid at room temperature.
