Goddamn! To completely forget about a guy in your cells is beyond grossly incompetent. From the sound of things, he could have died of kidney failure if they had forgotten about him for just a little bit longer. And that they're so bad at cleaning their cells that he ate meth off the floor of the cell in an effort to stay alive....

This guy is going to take them to the farking cleaners.

To the skeptics, I salute you. Skepticism should be applauded but, for a moment, forget the the food, forget the water, forget the urine, forget the meth, forget what they found in the apartment, forget the glass, and basically every other compelling part of this case.

How the hell does a man sit in a cell for five days without charges in this country?

If there is any shred left of The Constitution, the guy could be obviously guilty of genocide and we would (deservedly) give him that much.

Those POWs probably had water...

He lost 15 pounds. Lets say he weighs 150 pounds. That's 10% water loss mostly. At 15% you usually die. 10-15% is pretty close to death situation. And considering how kidneys work, yes kidneys will fail with significant water loss.

ongbok: Brainsick: ongbok: what ever the kid took while he was in the cell I believe he brought in himself and didn't find in the cell

A. If the cops didn't find something on him, he probably took it to get rid of evidence
B. If he did actually find it on the floor, he broke rule #3 of the holding cell "Don't eat drugs off the floor"

/add me to the chorus hoping this guy gets a payday, this is an inexcusable oversight for a detention facility

Oh yeah he will get a payday for being left in the cell, and he deserves it. I'm just calling bullshiat on the whole they left meth in the cell thing. And for the record since he wasn't under arrest or being booked he wasn't stripped searched or cavity searched so there were many places that he could stashed some meth on himself that would have been missed in a pat down.

If he was a meth user, don't you think he would've snorted it? The idea is to get it into your blood system as quickly as possible, and meth is absorbed quicker through the mucous membrane quicker than through the stomach lining. But there's this niggling fact that if they could forget about a person who hasn't even been charged with a crime for five days while he's kicking and screaming, it doesn't surprise me that they don't routinely clean the cells.

And the meth, or even the pot isn't the point. The point is that this man was held, without being charged with a crime for five days. He wasn't given any water, any food, no phone call, he was thrown in a cell for five days. And he was never charged with a crime. The DEA admits that. Even if the guy was a meth dealer, or a meth addict, or a pothead, his civil right to due process was violated, and the authorities involved just said "our bad". I don't care what a person has done, if they're taken into custody they either need to be charged, or released.

And then the DEA paid for his hospital visit out of the kindness of their hearts?

Really? Some folks cannot believe that law enforcement could possibly be this incompetent. Well yes, they can.

/interestingly, often the same folks who believe the very worst of "government" give law enforcement a complete pass.

And some folks (especially on fark) believe any story that is anti-cop. Really? It's not possible this tool ate his own meth because he knew he was facing more charges, refused food and water because he wanted a paycheck, and wound up in the hospital because of his own stupidity. Well yes, it is.

Nope. Not possible. You can't eat or drink what isn't there or what you don't have access to because you're LOCKED IN A FREAKIN' CELL! You're an idiot just like your buddy Mock26.

When I read multiple articles that all support the kids story and the DEA itself has admitted culpability, yeah I'm going to believe you're still an idiot.

Also, he had been cleared and was free to go. He thought he was just in the cell waiting for one of the agents to give him a ride home. Why would he "eat his own meth thinking he was facing more charges" when he had been given the all clear and not charged with a damn thing?

Probably something along the lines of an agent who was close to the end of his schedule. He signs the guy out and offers the guy a ride home from some other officer and puts him in a cell to await transport. He either forgets to tell someone or the other person misunderstands or forgets and as far as anybody knows he was sent home.

Funny how that happens when you militarize civilian police in the wake of a terrorist attack.
And theres no way, ever, that this sort of thing will be undone.

Once you make the cops paramilitary, they will stay such. Who will ever have the political will to see this sort of thing done away with?

If a democrat tries to defang the cops "socialist! Soft on crime! America hater! Not a friend to the unions!"

And a republican would never *dream* of reforming police of taking away some of their powers on ideological reasons.

You're missing the point. The meth doesn't matter. If he were being held on charges, he should have been arraigned long before the five day mark. He was kept in a holding cell at the DEA equivalent of a precinct house. That is not normal due process; he should have been on a bus to arraignment within 48 hours. By a DEA Agent's admission, he was found, by accident, after hearing noises from the holding cell area.

Is it possible that this tool ate his own meth because he knew more he was facing more charges, refused food and water because he wanted a paycheck and wound up in the hospital because of his own stupidity AND the DEA is corroborating his story? Well no, it isn't.

Wanna bet on that? There are already states that treat marijuana as a minor offense, if none at all. All that's left is the federal part of the drug war to be taken off the books.

The only reasons the states elect people who'll treat marijuana as a minor offense is because the various industries with an interest in keeping pot illegal don't need to bother bribing lobbying state-level politicians. If it's decriminalized federally, they'd simply buy state politicians in states where there's a risk of legalization. And it'd work. Any candidate who isn't arguing for complete legalization at a federal level isn't going to change a damned thing.

LordJiro: And his other economically-retarded policies would be disastrous. That's assuming, of course, that A: he can get his agenda through Congress, and B: he has any real interest in becoming President, rather than just parting fools from their money.

I'm not going to vote for a third party that doesn't have the manpower, organization or funds needed to get elected. A political party needs to build local and state-level support before going after federal office, and almost none do that. And don't give me that 'well, if you don't vote for them, they'll never get power' bullshiat; there are simply too many 'third parties' for ANY of them to get any power, simply because the vote will be split too much. If, say, the left-leaning political parties combined into one, they might have a chance.

But until they do, I'm not wasting my vote on symbolism.

Also, as a side note, if you were insinuating that RON PAUL is a 'third option' that's not part of the 'two evils', I'd just like to remind you that he is, in fact, a Republican, no matter how 'libertarian' he pretends to be.

I don't, because it's sods law that a pothead would find meth inside a detention cell of the DEA. I also doubt he is lying about the lack of water, simply because after a certain point his own refusal to drink would of got him sectioned under some form of mental health legislation (i.e. he is no longer of sound mind) and they'd of got an IV in to him.

What does sound very plausible is that they discharged him, yet someone forgot to go get him. So not only did the computer say the cell was emptied, it never flagged a reminder to deliver meals to that 'empty' cell.

I can also well believe that the cleaning service, despite the cell being flagged as needing cleaning, skipped it when they found the door still locked.

What really does end the debate on his honesty is that the DEA have agreed with his side of events and admitted culpability.

... No water or food for 5 days. Don't be a farking idiot; you can die from that.

I had a week of sleep deprivation training, too, but I wouldn't want to be in his position. I can deal without food, but I wouldn't want to be in his situation. POWs are given enough food and water to survive - generally - while this man had NOTHING for 5 days. You cannot survive without water.

He was in a holding cell. So it is probably a fairly safe assumption to say his lawyer is right - kid was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It's not. But in the previous article...

He was one of seven people detained after a Drug Enforcement Administration ecstasy raid in University City on April 21, according to a DEA statement.

"The individual was at the house by his own admission," the DEA confirmed Monday.

During the raid, authorities confiscated ecstasy, marijuana, prescription medication, hallucinogenic mushrooms, and a white powdery substance that was described as a synthetic hallucinogen. They also seized numerous weapons including a Russian rifle, handguns and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

I don't know whether this was a house he shared, or a rave he was at, or if he was just paying a call on his friendly local dealer for some pot, but apparently he wasn't regarded as the criminal mastermind responsible for all that stuff, since they let him and the other six guys walk. Or, well, you know, thought they had.

Okay.

In his desperation, he said he was forced to drink his own urine.

I see.

"...I hallucinated by the third day..."

Figures.

Chong said he lost roughly 15 pounds during the time he was alone...

That so?

His lawyer confirmed that Chong ingested a powdery substance found inside the cell. Later testing revealed the substance was methamphetamine...

Mmhmm.

After days of being ignored, Chong said he tried to take his own life by breaking the glass from his spectacles with his teeth and then carving "Sorry mom," on his wrists.

Okay then.

He said nurses also found pieces of glass in his throat, which led him to believe he ingested the pieces purposefully.

Interesting.

He spent three days in the intensive care unit at Sharp Hospital and his kidneys were close to failing...

Uh-huh.

The incident also caused Chong to miss his midterms at UCSD.
