I'm not a "real American", but FFS in America a lot of women struggled and campaigned and worked hard to work towards equality.

That was done in true American spirit. If there's something you need or want and no one is supplying, manufacture it yourself. Chances are there are others out there who want the same thing.

As to the melting pot question, this is how it starts melting. First you have girls who can't take part at all. Their daughters take part, but only in their own prom. Someday, the daughters or granddaughters of these girls will take part in the coed prom.

Sorry but moving the norm forward will take centuries. These girls weren't even challenging their norm enough to move it forward at all. There is no honor in caving in to a repressive system and doing things their way, and that's what these girls are doing.

Conservative Islam treats women not as equals but as an evil temptation that needs to be hidden and controlled. These girls gave in to that system and allowed themselves to be hidden and controlled.

But they did it in a way that allowed their society to accept it. They took something unacceptably "American" and made it "acceptably" Muslim. They didn't do things "Conservative Islam's" way, because that would have been for them not to have a prom at all. They did it their own way, which was to have a "girls only" prom, in which they got to dress up--like American girls--wear make up and let their hair down--like American girls--and dance to music--like American girls. It allowed them to be American and less conservative, while allowing their conservative parents and community to rationalize that they didn't violate tradition TOO much, so it could happen without censure.

You're not giving the girls enough credit for finding a way to make a tiny break with tradition and still keep the system you decry happy. Revolution can't always be made with a sledgehammer. Sometimes it has to be made with a scalpel. What good would it have done the girls if they broke tradition completely, went to the prom openly in a low-cut dress with a boy--and then their scandalized parents shipped them back to arranged marriages in Yemen for dishonoring the families? Hooray, they challenged their system! too bad about the honor killings.

Now these girls will go to college or get married and go to work; their children will go to high school some day, and when it comes time for THEIR proms, maybe the parents will be even less hidebound to religion and tradition and be able to say "OK, Sofiyeh, you can go to the prom, but you must wear your hijab and no kissing! Be back by ten!" Of such tiny steps are revolutions made.

First: Ham has some cool dive bars that were the seeds of true punk, and a couple of decent restaurants - and I think it's the only place around here that serves real dill pickle soup. Hey, it's better than it sounds... though granted, that is setting kind of a low bar.

Second: between Hamtramck & Dearborn, The D has actually taken a step backwards, defying the impossible. It already had the economy and infrastructure of a 3rd-world country, why not adopt the 17th-century cultural traditions too?

Good thought, but unfortunately it's heading the opposite direction. This isn't a story about some pre-existing segment of American society that's slowly opening up to western traditions, it's a little enclave of what used to be a free and optimistic America that is slowly ~~succumbing to~~ adopting an oppressive and discriminatory culture, while a bunch of "all viewpoints are equal" types celebrate the backslide.

I was sort of thinking along these lines. They're not holding a prom, they're holding a glorified dance. Prom was/is about socializing with everyone in a proper manner(which is why I didn't go to mine, obviously, but that's just because I'm an asshole). If your religion stops you from participating in society in a proper/formal manner, then it's time to re-consider the part of your religion stopping you from participating in that apparently "appalling" behavior...

Kinda clues you in though, on the overall behavior patterns of some of the middle east, ie DO NOT GET ALONG WITH ANYONE!!!

As long as tax payer money didn't go to to it, I've no problem with it though. If taxpayer money went into humoring religious/sexual segregation though, I'll take issue. Kinda goes against that whole church and state thing, and yes, I'd say the same thing for any religiosity oriented event.(atheist).

Which brings me to the question, what would an all guy prom be like? Who's going to shell for a tux or anything like that when there's no gals to impress? (Part of why I skipped my prom, was in a class with 16 kids my senior year..I was a transplant in late high school and really didn't like anyone, did go to my former city's prom though). Do the guys get any sort of fun event out of this, or are they just crapped on?
