That reminds me, my wife is a fan of Jane Austen's works. After she heard about Pride and Prejudice and Zombies on Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me and was shocked that someone did that to that story I bought a copy of it and placed it on our bookshelves in her Austen section. About a week later I heard a, "You son of a BIATCH!" from the library- she had found it.

Simple, use milk crates:

This is a really good image considering how bad the camera is.

Note: I bought these crates legally from the Container Store, didn't swipe them. Also made sure to get something other than the sickly orange color.

The Book on the Bookshelf by Henry Petroski is rather good. Short, readable, sarcastic, and accurate. The illustrations of medieval technology and the evolution of library spaces are very helpful. overall it is surprisingly entertaining.

Did somebody mention bookshelves?

Of course, since I have over 5,000 hardbacks (mostly first edition science fiction hardbacks), I've gone for density over "playful" bookshelves.

Had a coworker who was vocally fond of Anne Rice. She was vocally fond of a lot of stuff.
Hell, she was vocal.
She was taking a bus trip to meet a friend she had met online.
I gave her at the 11th hour a book by her favorite authoress that she had yet to read. "Beauty" and she got on the bus with it.
Saw her a year later at the mall. She jumped an escalator to avoid me.

No monocles, but I do own some steampunk costumes/suits. I enjoy collecting and wearing top hats. All of the black ones are originals, 1890's to 1930's. - some collapsible, some made with hatters silk and others with beaver skin. I have a few more scattered around my place as well in various conditions.

The chucks on the shelf were the chucks I wore when I was the Buzz mascot at Georgia Tech.
The custom made giant chucks on the couch are for costume events, Burning Man, performing, etc.

I dated a girl who is really into the theater, she had boxes of hats from the 20's and 30's both men and women's hats, and told me I could have a top hat, but they were all waaaay too small. She said, people back then just had smaller heads, and it's a double whammy for me, mine's 7 5/8(rather large). Every time I see her, I tell her she still owes me a top hat.

Pretty much. Most of mine are on the small side. I wear a 7 so it's not so bad for me, although I do have a couple that are too small for me but are still great for lending out to girl friends. One of my top hats is actually quite large, so much so that I can pull it completely over my head down to the bridge of my nose. I carved out two eye holes into the front of that one, added some black scrim material to make it difficult to see my eyes (but easy to see out) and put a masquerade mask on the hat. The hat covering much of my head makes for a rather unique masquerade costume.

/sorry for the treadjack

I'm glad my comment vanished, since I was going to mention Petroski's book as well and I would have been embarrassed. I have 9 bookcases and a kindle and a dog who cuddles while I read.

From age 16 to about 40 I kept every book I bought and lugged them all over Canada. Half the weight of every move was books.

Never thought I'd part with them, but now I'm liquidating them and just keeping the ones I'll want to read again and again.
