I've heard of KS a few days ago, when I stumbled upon a band seeking funds to go to China for a small tour. The band's name is MATTEO, and I liked what I heard, but didn't back them because they reached their goal by the time I heard about it.

I was thinking about using it to raise money for an urban garden project that is *this* close to being a reality (we have enough money, but extra for liability insurance and water and seeds and soil amendments helps), but things have happened the last 3 days that make the chosen site all of a sudden not so viable.

My friend's band was going to go the kickstarter route, but then decided to run a similar funding campaign on their own so they could keep whatever money they got, even if they didn't reach the $10K goal. It worked, and they were able to start making their new album.

Notwithstanding the dumb typos in the description, this could have been an interesting documentary in the right hands. I don't think I've ever seen a documentary about "former evangelicals", even though I've known probably hundreds of them and neither the Church nor the media seems too interested in talking about them.

I don't think those hands are the right ones, though.

Dinobot: I'm a little sad because a friend of mine failed at her kickstarter to help her publish a children's book. At least she raised many times over all these fail kickstart projects combined...

CSB: One of the 2 Paultards at my work claims to have started a Kickstarter to raise money to finish editing and distribute his RON PAUL! "documentary". I'm assuming he's failing as no one wants to watch a 45 min Dragon Ball Z cartoon where somebody just super-imposes RON PAUL!'s head over Goku's body. (I shiat you not) I told him just to post it on You Tube but he claims it keeps getting taken off for copyright infringement. Don't really see how Kickstarter will change that but, he's a Paultard, who the fark knows what goes on in those kids heads.

This is the one I'm seriously considering backing.

They could sell some of those to network television as reality shows.

After reading some of the silly stuff on KS, I decided to start up my own on there. Its a little LED bar that can be glued to cheap cellphones, so that the user has a flash and kickstand (future design).

Mad_Radhu: I don't know why you'd need a Kickstarter to publish a non-illustrated book in this day and age. If you can't sell the book through traditional publishing channels, take your manuscript, convert it into ebook format and upload it to Amazon for sale in the Kindle store. If you get enough ebook sales, you can then parlay that into physical books getting printed, like Amanda Hocking did. Self publishing just seems like a huge waste of money.

I think the last 4 purchases from the B&N store have been compilations of free domain scifi short stories that people have thrown together. For 3 dollars to keep me from having to search out 100 stories... yes please.

Depends. As mentioned by someone else, many comic book creators fund their books via Kickstarter, and offer tiered incentives based on how much you donate. $20 may get you their comic book ("It's a graphic novel, Joel!") but $40 might get additional freebies like posters, artwork, personal sketches and commissions. I've seen some where on the high end you can get yourself drawn into the book itself.

Of course all that's meaningless if you're not into the funnybooks, but if you are, there's definitely some incentives to backing it if it's an artist or writer you like. Some bands do this as well, offering a thank you in the liner notes or the like...

Diamond in the ruff. for every 1,000 people looking for free money, there's probably 1 thing either artistically and intellectually valuable, and 1 thing that could be hugely profitable.

But that's life. And it gives it better chance of getting picked up and pumped up then normal channels where you need the network to even get in the door.

This is the first I've heard of Kickstart, but what a great a idea - get people to pledge money for a project that they will have no control over and no way of knowing what the finished project will be - so much better than hitting them over the head and stealing their wallet.

It's a difference in scale. And it usually amounts to simply preordering a product at a reasonable discount.

There's not much risk. If they don't get the full funding by the end of the pledge period, you don't get charged and they don't get a dime.

i hadnt thought about that. i thought it was just for investing in a business. those watches look pretty cool if is still wore a watch. they only needed 100k and got 7mill. theyre gonna have to spend it on something like a massive ad campaign or a superbowl ad. kudos for the find Max Awesome.
