Every time I new piece of technology comes down there are a large number of military people who want nothing to do with it.

Look at how long it took Civil War generals to realize the grand ol'battle charge was now a relic of the past thanks to the accurate and sustainable rate of fire rifles gave infantry. Hell, the British were still trying cavalry charges during WW1.

Actually the F-18 has had 64 issues with suspected hypoxia. For reference, this is not a new issue facing airforces.

The F-22 has flown tens of thousands of sorties, has pilots with over 1000hrs and is a very sucessful platform .

The problem has nothing to do with new technology. The problem with the F22 is that the oxygen mask/supply system for the pilot doesn't work, so pilots have passed out at altitude and crashed. Somehow Lockheed dorked up a technology that has been in use since the '40's and hasn't fixed it yet, and the Air Force hasn't sued them out of existence for their shortfalls.

It sound like the oxygen delivery system is the main problem. One pilot died because the plane sensed it was over heating and the on board computer shut off the oxygen!

I always assumed the F-22 had a dash vent knob, like on a Toyota, so you could dive down and get some air if you ran out. I mean, sure it would come out of the vent at 500 MPH, but hey...it's air.

well, 3 out of the 4 most beautiful. General Dynamics commissioned the 4th in 1978. It's the Lotus Elise of military aircraft.

And the more they fly them the less the incidents average out.

A while back there was an article talking about some average that is counted like hours down compared to hours in the air..some bean counter or talking point type stat....but when the first 2 years of the 18's and 22's were compared using this stat they were almost identical......

Same thing happens to recreational pilots....they use some stat to show how dangerous recreational flying is and compare it to commercial flights that only go from point A to B and don't do touch and goes, immelmans and split s's etc...like recreational pilots do to have fun.

It might have something to do with the fact that because the damn planes cost so much they will never get to fight when the next international squable breaks out. Pilots don't just want to fly training missions and admire sexy airplanes in hangers. They want the chance to test their mettle against our adversaries, and frankly, the only thing that will drag the F22 out of the hanger is a war against China. So if a pilot wants combat citations and medals - they ain't gonna get them flying an F22.

The first 50 years of aviation was a period of rapid improvement. Then innovation stopped.

I figured if they were declassifying the SR71, they must have other, even crazier awesomer planes....turns out...

well, there are probably some pretty crazy classified planes, but still...

When the company I used to work for bought out a flight control business out of California, one of its properties was the f-22 flight controls. When we brought it to our facility, so much of the control system was jury rigged the engineers in California hard coded a majority of the pass/fail/OMG DEATH alarms to pass just so the thing would start.

I've wondered the same thing: if something as fantastical as the SR-71 was built in the 60's, what must they have (classified) these days? The mind boggles.

I don't think the OBOGS system works how you think it works....
And it is used by several aircraft. Look into bleed air and how the AF is working on the problem. Most of the issues occured at Elmendorf, where jets were started in hangars (Alaska). Much like the Navy issue that was overcome and fixed.
Many times it is procedures, rather than a hardware issue.

The whole F-22 program reads like a really awesome beta design that the Air Force was suckered into buying bulk. We should have a couple dozen F-22s that test pilots can play with around with and defense contractors can work to improve. In the meantime the Silent Eagle or something along those lines could meet our air defense needs (since many of the older airframes likely do need to be retired).
