I'm not even a tablet kinda guy but I'd rather have a £500 device than £25 worth of flowers. It's not a surprising result.

I was thinking of buying my mom an iPad, but she said she doesn't really want one and the iPad doesn't play Flash so she can't use it on her Chinese TV websites. Might get her an Android tab.

Whatever...My mom begged for a laptop for months, so I got her one for Christmas. It sits unused because hooking up the interwebs is "too complicated" so it will have to wait until she moves in six months.

My mom gets pissed off if anyone spends more than about $50 on her. A few years ago, my sister bought her some perfume worth about $100 and she made her take it back to the store.

Two years ago for mothers day she asked me to take her out for Chinese food and see Iron Man 2.

My mom is the same way, but money isn't everything. Spend time with family, show her that you're happy. That's good enough for most moms. Also, chocolate never got anyone yelled at.

While an iPad (or other tablet) is mostly useless to me, I think they'd be a good option for someone who isn't good with computers and just wants to use the internet and play simple games.

Mammy,
Mammy,
The sun shines east, the sun shines west,
I know where the sun shines best--
Mammy,
My little mammy,
My heartstrings are tangled around Alabammy.
I'm comin',
Sorry that I made you wait.
I'm comin',
Hope and trust that I'm not late, oh oh oh
Mammy,
My little Mammy,
I'd walk a million miles
For one of your smiles,
My Mammy! Oh oh oh...

Subby, your mom wants an ipud. She told me...

2012-05-01 04:15:03 PM
Actually, I got my mom one for Mom's Day a couple of years ago. She *loves* that thing. Checks her email with it, surfs the web, plays solitaire, stuff like that. At night she can listen to these radio serials she listened to when she was a kid.

Also, tech support calls to me have dropped to basically zero. The only time she has an issue is when her router goes down, and usually a simple reboot will fix that. The iPad itself, however, has never had any issues.

So yeah, awesome Mother's Day present.

My mom had asked for a Kindle for Christmas a couple of years ago but I got her an iPad instead. I think I've graduated to being the favorite child after that.

If she could play farm town on it I don't think she'd ever put it down.

WTF? People give gifts on mother's day? I've always considered it a Hallmark holiday, and as such, bought a card.

No, my mom would definitely not want an iPad. She's against smart phones, tablets, e-readers and the like.

But she would prefer some tickets to a Broadway show over some flowers.

Lets see it has USB ports, expandable memory, can read external HD, thumb drives, SD cards, etc, you can alter the file structure, with a blue-tooth keyboard it doubles as a netbook(yes I know you can use a blue-took keyboard with a iPad). However the other things no so much at least not easily... also your not trapped in apple world you can get music, apps, etc really from any where. Where as with an i product your stuck with iTunes only.

so your wife didn't understand the specs of her ipad before she bought it? and external storage access was the breaking point for her? i took your original post to mean that she thought the form factor was just an enlarged ipod touch, which made me confused about the android purchase.

i don't consider myself a "fanboy" but i much prefer my ipad apps to my android apps simply because they are better controlled and supported, so i don't consider being tied to the app store a negative. and you're delusional if you think the only way to get media onto your ipad is through the itunes store.

Was that tablet a Toshiba Thrive by any chance? I got one last year for basically the same reasons.

I've used the SD card slot to review photos from my dSLR camera plenty of times, and I've used the USB port to attach flash drives and external keyboards on more than a few occasions. None of those would have been a simple matter if I were using an iPad.

Well... I've plugged in cameras and SD/CF cards in to my iPad plenty of times to get photos. USB keyboard or bluetooth has worked fine... just needs a little adapter for any USB device to attach to iPad. Simple as plugging in a cord. That's it.

Jailbreak for lots of cydia apps... Use dropbox and goodreader for lots of file integration.

The Asus Transformer looks like a good Android tablet though.

If you buy a woman a 500 dollar present on a day where flowers are expected, you best get her flowers as well, or she will not be happy. She might be "happy", but she will still miss the flowers.

My mom already has an iPad. She uses it to play sudoku...and that's about it. I'm pretty sure that you can get a whole book of sudoku at the dollar store, but the iPad is shiny. So, money well spent.

Lol that's funny. My mom uses her iPad to play solitaire. I don't think she even realizes it's capable of more.

Huh. I had heard about the "camera kit" that converts the port on the bottom of an iPad to a USB port or SD card slot (depending on which dongle you attach), but based on what I'd read, I had assumed that the USB port would only work with digital cameras and mass storage devices (and even then it sounded like the iPad software would assume any mass storage device was a memory card from a camera).

Jailbreak for lots of cydia apps... Use dropbox and goodreader for lots of file integration.

True, but I do appreciate the fact that I can get apps for my Thrive from three different stores (Google Play, Amazon, Toshiba, probably more if I cared to set them up) without having to jailbreak, and the Thrive (and almost all other Android devices) allow you to use a proper file manager.

I do find it annoying that the Thrive lacks an SMB/CIFS driver (which I would assume is a build option in Android, since it's an optional module in the Linux kernel that Android uses behind the scenes), but I've never seen any other Android device offer it. Maybe one of these days I'll just have to root my device and install my own build of Android on it.

The Asus Transformer looks like a good Android tablet though.

I almost went with that instead of the Thrive. My only complaint about the Transformer is that all of the USB ports and memory card slots are on the dock, not the tablet itself. Granted, that does keep the weight of the Transformer down (at least when you leave the dock at home), but if I'm at an event where I'm taking lots of pictures with my dSLR and want to review them on a larger screen, I'd rather reach for something with the form factor of a tablet than a netbook.
