So, wars and unneeded tax cuts don't need to be paid for, but school lunches, public radio, student loans and clean water do. Got it.

"to forget, whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again"

It was a warning, not a farking road map.

Always!

again people expect the GOP to clean up the mess of the dems.

the dems proposed and approved the interest rate hikes.

I agree, we should offset them. Raise taxes.

So...how soon will the revolution start? And will it start with a bang or just a few small skirmishes and then snowball?

We seem to be just complacent enough with bread and circuses to remain docile, but will that last?

Why would we offset not increasing taxes?

If the tax cuts go away, revenue goes up.
if the tax cuts stay, revenue stays the same.
There's nothing to offset.

The Bush tax cuts need to go away, even if it means raising taxes on everyone. I don't care anymore. Then they need to give tax cuts to the people who need them (and I ain't talking about millionaires)

I think if they have to extend it, they have to recalculate their budget since it's based on the idea that the tax cuts would go away once it hits the expiration date.

In other words, extending them would make projected revenue go down most likely.

Funny that's not what the GOP said for the tax cuts in Obama stimulus. They said it was "spending" and would add to the debt.

I was thinking specifically of the student loan offset dog and pony show. Personally I'd like to see defense cut 5% per year for ten years.

Currently, official budget projections are based on extrapolation of current tax law including future changes (read: expirations) that are also part of the legislation. Current law says that tax rates will go up at the end of 2012 and therefore a 2.4 trillion dollar revenue increase over 10 years is used by the CBO in their projections today. Extending the tax rate beyond 2012 would change that 2.4 trillion dollar value the CBO has been "counting on". If current law said that there was no planned expiration of the tax rates, you would be correct in that there would be nothing to offset.

Ok, offset it by increasing the inheritance tax

The correct term is Job-creators not millionaires.

/sarcasm

Seriously though, I agree. The long-term plan should be: Raise taxes on all. Cut spending on things which don't have long-term economic benefits and start reducing the debt. We as a whole spent our way into this whole, we all will have to suck it up to fix it.

This would be great, but I don't think now is the time. The recovery is still anemic, and I don't think pulling more money out (which would likely result in layoffs) would have a beneficial effect.

It depends on where the pentagon decided to start cutting. A lot of that spending goes out of the country.

Well then you should have no problem with repealing those Obama tax cuts some to pay for it should you?

Are you for or against the tax cuts? You seem to be playing both sides like your normally do on the issue.

IOW, all the "Bush Tax Cuts," and the "Payroll Tax Holiday," both end completely 31 December. And the student loan subsidy won't be renewed. Any incumbent is hoping people won't be reminded of that in November.

2012-05-01 01:38:45 PM
Let's get this straight once and for all. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is more important--nothing--NOTHING!--is more important than lowering the deficit--NOTHING!--EVER!--nothing is more important than lowering the deficit. NOTHING.

Do you UNDERSTAND this yet? Libby lib lib?

Finally?

NOTHING. EVER.

(Except tax cuts for the wealthy and defense spending and oil subsidies.)

Quasar: Don't worry; I'm sure that Obama will hammer out a compromise*.

Yep. They'll cut "projected increases" to the budget ten years from now and pretend that offsets present day tax cuts for the rich. Of course, any spending bills passed in the future would supersede the prior law.

The country goes bankrupt, but the rich still get theirs.

Wait, that isn't how it works?

It has certainly helped in the recent improvement in the economy so seems to be working. Why change that now? 0bama and I both view that it was a good thing.

You could always redirect that $$$ to projects that would directly benefit Americans. Infrastructure, education, health care funding, developing alternative energy capacity, mass transit, etc etc.

Would be a much more useful and efficient way to spend the money than on blowing up sand dunes.

Yes, and everyone else. The top three income tax rates need to be 70, 60, and 50%. Oh and all financial gains that a person or corporation acquires from any source should be considered income. Yes even capital gains, inheritance, health care benefits, etc...

Republicans spend more than anyone.
Republicans expand government more than anyone.

This has been proven again & again.

The student loan tax rate issue is a perfect encapsulation of the two parties:

Democrats: Pay for it by taxing the wealthy more

Republicans: Pay for it by cutting preventative healthcare for the needy

You could offset the cost by, oh I don't know, cutting a small percentage of the grossly bloated defense budgets.

I'm sure the Republicans would be all for that fiscally responsible move...

And actual tax receipts totaled approximately $2.1 trillion, $600 billion less than the $2.7 trillion expected. The actual deficit in 2009 was $1.4 trillion.[2]
