Krymson Tyde: EnderKR: Want to dance on the bar? Lose some weight. I don't see how this is difficult. Men like shinny and pretty.

Is shinny a contraction of sharp and knees!

Omg yes.

I once watched a fat person try to order one of every combo plate at a Mexican restaurant and got audibly and visibly upset that the waitress was in shocked and wanted to clarify what she heard. Bonus, he pushed the door instead of pulling like it said, and proceeded to squeeze his fat ass through it, shaking the whole wall.

I will never forget this as long as I live and will forever associate being fat with ordering every combo plate on the menu in one sitting. Sorry fatties.

fark her. this goddamn snowflake, don't hurt my feelings, crap has gone way too far. I'm 47. I don't look good shirtless anymore. Guess what? I don't walk around with my love handles hangin' low. Why? Because it doesn't look good. Just like your 300 pound ass won't look good on a stage. You want to get on a stage and dance and feel good about yourself? Then put down the damn Twinkies, drop 100 pounds - oh you'd still be ugly. Nevermind.....

"Ramos, 21, told the Press-Citizen last week she had been prohibited from dancing on a platform at the bar because of her size, even though she paid the same cover charge as other patrons."

Yeah..and if they had let her and she broke something (or herself) she undoubtedly would have sued...good move by the bar.

NO! She is who she is and the world should show some fat acceptance!

There is an actual movement called that. Some colleges even have departments that spend their time denying that being fat has health consequences, etc.

I get the impression that the apology isn't going to be worth much.... The bigguns seem determined to protest the venue no matter how effusive the guy is... Another symptom of "everyone gets a trophy" mentality.... Everyone gets an apology.

I think we should be getting people to talk about size discrimination and working toward acceptance.

Yes you shoudl accept that people find you repulsive and a business that allowed you to dance on the bar would lose business.

The Union Bar. During my time in Iowa City, that place was shut down for liquor violations almost as much as it was open. I wonder how many owners it's passed through since I left.

The whole "Fat Acceptance" movement basically boils down to the following:

- "It's not my fault I'm fat" (the classic self-diagnosed "thyroid problem" is usually used to justify this, or nonsense concepts that people are obese because of genetics or because their body "knows" it's proper size)
- "There's nothing I can do about it", therefore, drastic lifestyle changes will be ineffective, so why bother? (One scary, scary bit of nonsense advocated by some Fat Acceptance proponents is "intuitive eating", that is, the body knows what it needs and triggers these needs through cravings. Feel like eating an entire 20 piece bucket of the Colonel's Extra Crispy? Well then, that must be exactly what your body "needs" right now)
- Outright censorship is perfectly acceptable. Magazines should be prevented for showing lean models, and instead should be forced to show "people of size".
- Any dissenting opinions, no matter how respectful or valid, must be silenced at all costs
- Almost every physician and dietitian is wrong--here's a single sentence cherry-picked from a 50-year old study that proves that obesity is perfectly healthy
- It's society that must change, not the obese individual
- Fat persecution is the same as racial discrimination (imo, it's actually more akin to discriminating against smokers)
- Although I have no qualifications whatsoever, I feel that obesity should be cherished, so you should ignore all medical advice and listen to me (very scary!)

Basically, "Fat Acceptance" is one of the most jaw-dropping cases of willful denial I've ever seen.

Maybe they noticed that their food revenue would increase by 500% on nights that this woman and her friends were there.

Austin Fall, 24, of Coralville, said he witnessed the discrimination firsthand when he worked as a bouncer at the bar two-and-a-half years ago. ... Fall said he was told by owners to "keep the fat and ugly girls away from the stage ... Fall also said employees were encouraged to watch black patrons more closely, and that men were not allowed to dance on the platform.

So, Jordan Ramos committed the crime of dancing while fat, and she should be rightly shunned for it. But the bar owner may also be a racist homophobic dick.

2012-05-01 12:08:28 PM
As a method of apologizing, the bar should make Tuesday 'Chub Night'. They offer free entry to the fat cows and let them dance on modified bombproof stages. Then just let the free market decide. If these disgusting pachyderms can go home with $80 tucked in their 46" G-strings, more power to 'em. But if the night ends with a bunch of fat ugly broads staring at each other across an empty bar, well, the market has spoken.

umad: Fall also said employees were encouraged to watch black patrons more closely, and that men were not allowed to dance on the platform.

But it is the sensitive fatties who are the real victims here. If I lived in Iowa City, I would be parking a hot-dog cart in front of this bar to make a killing support the protest.

People can bleach their skin or get a sex change, but it's incredibly difficult to lose weight.

If I was the bar's owner I would have had operated under the theory that there is no such thing as bad publicity.

My official press release would state: "We do not discriminate against fat and ugly people. We just grant additional privileges to those that are thin and attractive."

I would also print up and sell t-shirts with the following printed one them:

"Union Bar: Catering to the thin and attractive people since 2005!"

"Union Bar: Were we marginalize fat and ugly people... so you don't have to!"

"Union Bar: If you are fat we reserve the right to limit your purchases to salads and light beer!"

"Union Bar: If you are ugly we reserve the right to put a bag over your head!"

"Union Bar: If you are fat or ugly and want to dance on a platform, we have a dumpster in the back alley!"

Ah, another edition of the (seemingly) daily FARK overweight thread, where the insecure and desperate find safe harbor in bashing others.

2012-05-01 12:15:00 PM
Are there any thin people in Iowa? Wikipedia says (link) that in Iowa 26.3% of adults are obese, 63.4% are overweight, along with (only!) 12.5% of children and adolescents, thus ranking 19 among these United States.

Admittedly that's still thinner than my current home in Kentucky, which ranks #7 with adult rates at 28.4% obesity and 66.8% overweight, and overweight kids at 20.6%.

Hell, with a BMI of 27.9 I'm skinnier than half the people I see around Lexington. And all my fat is on my belly protruding firmly forward, so I don't take up any more room on the bus than an anorexic high school girl. NYAAH NYAAH.

No, I think that was the bar that used to be a McDonald's. I forgot the name. I tended to avoid those bars, because I was a grad student and the Union in particular was pretty much all about the sloppy-drunk undergrads.
