Hrm, I've never seen that retractable lamp cord before. I like it.

Oh. For 20A outlets. Smart move choosing 120V...

I don't get the distance limitations on some of these - especially if you are properly up-sizing your chord diameter. The run from you panel to that outlet may be longer than 25 feet (and almost certainly is) but using a 50 foot mega chord is going to cause your children to burst into flames.

A simple rule of thumb: Always use an extension cord that is at least as thick as the cord it's extending.

I was fine with the article until they mentioned "vampire power".

Vampire power is literally not worth worrying about.

I just bought a 14 ga 100' extension cord for my new 'lectric mower, so I'm getting a kick....

...out of realizing just how many electric doodads I've probably burned up over the years because I was using a goddamn cheap-ass cord and never even thought about it before.

2012-05-01 11:25:45 AM
I was gonna go with, "really? People need to be told what electrical cords to use?" but then I rt stupid fa...

I can't reconcile "Forget it. You'll have to let your hair air dry if you can't plug in the hair dryer directly to an outlet." for a hair dryer because it draws 15 amps.... but a cheap 16-gauge cord is apparently ok with a vacuum... as they typically draw 11-14 amps.

How hard is "use a cord at least as thick as the one on the thing you're plugging in, but, really don't use extension cords"? If you don't have an outlet near enough to be convenient, I'd bet your house likely isn't up to code and you probably have bigger wiring problems (outdoor tools and multiple things plugged into surge protectors excepted, of course).

Length, diameter, materials and construction mater in an extension cord. I use a cord made from 12 8 gauge solid, low impurity, copper wire that has been specially braided and coated with platinum for my desk lamp so I get the highest quality light possible.

abkaiser: Vampire power is literally not worth worrying about.

< reads first sentence >

Yeah, the amount of "misinformation" (to put it politely) Oprah spews and supports really is farking criminal. Forget about "vampire power," her "medical advice" is frequently wildly counterproductive and the fraudsters she's spawned should be locked up.

But, noooooo, instead of being beaten about the head and shoulders for causing far more damage than anyone should be able to, she has built a legion of mindless followers who hang on to, believe without doubt, and proselytize her every damned word.

What is the best type of extension chord to use when tying up a hooker?

Pffft. Amateur. If you don't pay at least $1600 for your amp's power cord, you might as well be listening to AM radio.

/ wonders if people actually buy those, and, if they do, if those people know the wiring in the walls is less than $1/ft

I never thought of tying them with extension cords... I usually just beat them with it.

watts this ohm about, is it current?

Instead of writing down what gauge I need for every goddamn device, how about reading the amp rating on the cord and choosing one that's greater than or equal to the rating of the load, as short as possible, with at least as many prongs as the plug I'm extending? (there's no harm using a 3-wire extension cord with a 2-prong lamp, but it's not safe to go the other way)

Why in the world would you want to use an extension cord for a toaster, hair dryer, or vacuum cleaner?

Lou Brown: Why in the world would you want to use an extension cord for a toaster, hair dryer, or vacuum cleaner?

So I can vacuum my car floor mats poolside while drying my hair and having a piece of toast. Is that really that hard to imagine?

or get a bunch of 16-18 gauge heavy duty ones and not give a crap about what you plug in them.

I've never had trouble with any extensions I've ever used in my life.

Clearly you should only be using Monster® brand extension cords.

I still have that old extension cord my grandmother used to plug in the Christmas tree lights.

/Its in the server room.
/The backup batteries are across from the rack, you see.
/Don't touch it, sparks sometimes.

Probably not long. I've seen wireless outlets in tests. They showed how it could be used on TVs.

I only buy the thick expensive out door extension cords. Why the hell would I need anything else?

15. Portable compressor. A 10-gauge extra-heavy-duty extension cord will let you put air in a flat tire up to 100 feet away from an outlet.

Or, ya know, just fill the air tank and carry it to where ya need it
