The trailer is aces. I especially like how the chants get transitioned into the Hans Zimmer score around the 1:50 mark.

That, and Bane is going to be eleventy different kinds of badass.

Very interesting post by Alyssa Rosenberg over at Think Progress:

I'm excited to see an intellectual debate between [The Dark Knight Rises] and The Avengers. Christopher Nolan's Batman's movies have always had an element of monkish sacrifice to them: to be an impactful superhero, Bruce Wayne's had to surrender his true public image (in the first film, he acts the playboy to disguise his intentions), the love of his life and of the populace, and now, it's implied, either his life or his physical health. Bane's declaration that "your punishment must be more severe" is a looking-glass version of how Nolan's understood the only way for superheroes to make a difference, to self-abnegate, to foreswear their own happiness, to separate themselves from the people they are sacrificing themselves for.

The Marvel franchise, and The Avengers in particular (without spoiling anything), take the opposite tack. Its superheroes become better individuals more closely drawn to their communities for their experiences as superheroes. Tony Stark stops cackling over his power to kill and begins craving the approval of those around him, a selfish motivation that ultimately teaches him to engage with their needs. Thor falls in love with Jane Foster, and with Earth, a process of attachment that turns him from self-involved Asgardian prince into an admirable man. Captain America, in life and in death, gives the American people something to rally around, not to unify in their disgust at his perceived actions. The great tragedy of the Hulk has been that he's cut off from reason and attachment precisely at the moment that he could provide the greatest amount of strength to protect people or causes.

I like the change to Bane's voice. It is actually understandable now. The previous trailer was a bit of a struggle. Not just because it seemed garbled but also because it was too soft. Now it is a bit louder and more clear.

I like how people state that Nolan is grounded in reality yet the preview has a cargo plane with men jumping from it to attach cables to a smaller plane to rip the wings off to rescue Bane. (Which is incredibly awesome by the way)

The other thing I like about this trailer is there is no easy way to pick up what the details of the plot will be. Ok, Bane escapes, Bruce is tortured, then Batman comes back and fights Bane. But very little info as to the order of all that or how it happens.

Gwendolyn: Christian Bale can win a damn oscar but he can't play Batman without sounding like he has a dick down his throat. Ugh.

That doesn't bother me, I just think it is funny.

If you were a billionaire gotham darling who chases vagina all day, you would probably try to mask your voice as a dildo-chocking superhero too.

CSB time.

Last night, I got word of the movie's website having a little ARG/viral campaign involving a Gotham PD "police report" on Batman, along with a list of a hundred or so addresses in cities throughout the world that had some sort of Batman-related graffiti meant to be a part of the viral release for this trailer we've just seen. Once all the clues/graffiti were found, they'd release the trailer.

One of those addresses was for a bar a few blocks from my home in a bar district in Kansas City, so I went over and took a look. After searching the outside of the bar a bit and looking at the various band stickers plastered on newspaper racks and street poles, I went to the back patio area of the bar where there's a gutted-out, red British phone booth. Everbody I know around here has crammed in there drunk at one point or another. Anyway, I took a look inside, and saw a sticker that stood out among the random band stickers - sort of a chalk-like bat design (which you can see in the trailer). It was pretty subtle, and I wasn't sure if this was the right one as I didn't do any research before I left to go check out the bar, but it seemed like it had been freshly placed, so I took a photo of it, and then took the sticker itself (because fark anybody else - I'm claiming that shiat).

Went home, looked up the Twitter account for the movie as mentioned in the website, and saw that lots of the other addresses' clues had been found around the world, and the one I found matched perfectly with all of those. So mission successful! And it was kinda' fun doing it too. I Twittered the photo to turn in the "evidence", and I guess once they had all the clues discovered and reported in, they released the trailer we're all talking about now.

So basically, I'm (one of) the reason(s) you all got to see that trailer. You're all welcome, and you can thank me by having Anne Hathaway bathed and brought to my chambers.

/the bat-sticker is now adorning my laptop.

2012 might just be the greatest year in all of movie nerd-dom. I mean, 1982 is sort of close (Star Trek 2, Blade Runner, Conan the Barbarian, Tron, ET, Dark Crystal.) But we get three of the biggest hitters ever (Avengers, Batman, Hobbit) Ridley Scott doing sci fi (Prometheus,) another Spider-Man movie, assorted other sci fi or fantasy stuff (Men in Black 3, Snow White and the Huntsman, GI Joe 2, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, Brave, Total Recall, another Resident Evil movie, a Judge Dredd movie,) etc.

If you include TV, this might be the best nerd cultural year in history. Hell, comics and games are the weakest link right now (Avengers vs. X-Men sucks, and after Diablo 3, games look a little lackluster.)

*Raises hand*

Almost same story.

Heh. I usually have a drink or two while watching a movie. When I watched BB, it wasn't until the mansion burned that I realized I had been holding my drink the whole time and never took so much as a sip. Took me totally by surprise.

Think I might watch BB and The Dark Knight again tonight.

Mugato: rocky_howard: Superman Returns movie made more money than Batman Begins...

It made about the same and it cost $100 mill more.

It made 20 millions more. And the point is still the same: People went to see the movie with the same level of interest as Batman Begins.

What it cost is completely irrelevant to the public interest in it.

But now that you bring that up, it's just Hollywood cooking. The movie didn't cost that much, they just attached the bill for years of failures in development. Like Nicky Cage getting 10 millions guaranteed or Jon Peters spending money on techno spider porn.

Nana's Vibrator:

We like our heroes conflicted. Those heroes, especially Superman, are too vanilla.

Agreed. Heroes are always more relatable and interesting when they have flaws. I found Green Lantern to be boring and predictable. Then Farkers were talking about there were other Lanterns that had serious personality flaws and I wanted to know more about them. Superman had a good story with Red Son and I have Kingdom Come ordered from Amazon and will read that one soon. Hell, if you read the gnostic gospels in the Bible that deal with the teenage life of Jesus, he becomes more interesting. When Jesus was portrayed as having flaws just like the rest of us (blinding people who criticized his Dad's carpentry, raising kids from the dead, turning clay birds into real ones, etc.), he suddenly is more relatable.

I think that's why I've always enjoyed the Vertigo line of graphic novels. The line between hero and villain is very blurred.

/ Can't wait to see Hardy as Bane. He was awesome as Bronson.

Mugato: Orgasmatron138: After Nolan is done we can go back to the toungue in cheek crap that wrecked the series last time.

That's where they're headed, I bet. After the Avengers makes a brazillian dollars, DC is going to want to do a Justice League movie and that obviously doesn't fit in at all with Nolan's version.

/it won't do nearly as well since the JLA is pretty lame by comparison

That's cool by me; I just want a good wrap-up to the Nolan series, and then DC can do whatever it wants.

For my part, I love hero movies that get into the "why" of what makes a hero tick. Superman II was the gold standard for me until Batman Begins came out. It wasn't enough to tell Batman's origin story -that's been done. Nolan explained why Bruce chose the path he did; how he went from wanting revenge to higher ideals of justice.

I love that kind of stuff.

Also, did anyone else notice the role reversal when Bane is chocking Bruce Wayne? Isn't it reminiscent of Batman Begins where he pulls the mafioso out of the car?

"Who are you?"

"I'm Batman"

My guess is that Bane throws Bruce in prison for being so rich, not realizing that he's actually Bruce Wayne.

/I actually really enjoy Batman's voice. It makes him scarier, which is what he is trying to pull off after all.

Is it me or is there a whole Christ vibe going on? I know that in the comics, Bane is mostly known for breaking Batman's back. This looks like it might be something worse than that. Bruce saying that he hasn't given everything yet. Alfred talking about burying Bruce. Is this setting up for Bruce Wayne's death?

Can't wait to see this...

Every kid I've ever met loves the most recent 3 Star Wars. The movies were made for them and they enjoyed them...what's the bfd?

My friend's 3 year old is huge into Star Wars, and particularly The Phantom Menace. As he told me, "now I understand why Jar-Jar Binks exists."

To be fair to Bale, Nolan digitally altered his voice to make him sound more cookiemonsterish. Hopefully it's not as bad in this one. I've heard a lot of complaining about it in real life and on the internet. I hope Nolan listened.

Confabulat: No doubt. I couldn't figure out why people kept comparing Hunger Games to Twilight. They don't even resemble each other even a little. It's like people hear "YA" and think it's some new genre that was invented when Harry Potter came out.

Yeah, The Hobbit was considered a childrens book with LOTR as YA book. (before they classified them into Library sections).
Batman, "Comic book" superheros...where always considered (until recently as 'kid stuff'). The classification was 'comic book'..the funny pages of the newspaper or 'comic' books. for kids.

We grew up and he superhero's grew up. Heck some of the better movies where 'kids' movies..Star Wars 4-6. And even worse "kids movie" the new ones--which sucked not just for kids but for everyone.

Batman got reinvented with Miller's graphic novel "The Dark Knight Returns" in the 80's. Along with the entire comic book edge. Gaiman's "Sandman" had a bit to do with that, as did some of the others. But to strip it down, it's still a 'comic book' story with adolescent fantasy hero thing.
not a bad thing it's rather enjoyable to see and watch, it's not high art or even good Science fiction, IMHO.

/I still want to strangle my old roommate that took my first ed of "dark night returns" in the 80's..and burned some pages with his drunk cigarette dropping and took the book when I kicked him out. Asshole.
