The etymology is unclear, but it seems unlikely to be derived from "butt naked" (which I always assumed was the modern knock-off phrase from people mishearing "buck naked")...

Depends on who you ask. Quinon has a theory that it refers to buckskin, which was often nude-colored. Others assert that "buck" is an old synonym for "stark". Others agree with you. The world may never know the truth.
