I mean, that's a slightly hyperbolic headline, subby....

That's an amazing photo--in that it captures the brute strength of a moment--but Ali-Liston is the Greatest Boxing Photo of All Time--in that it actually tells a pretty complete story about the bout and about Ali.

I bet his grandkids will come out looking like that..

Well....he USED to have a face.

Ambivalence: Well....he USED to have a face.

He still does, it's just over there. And some of it's over there. And some is...oh, you stepped in it. That's just nasty.

This.

The Ali photo told a story. This picture captured a moment.

Still does not come close to the awesomeness of the picture of Tyson biting off that ear

Yep. 100 years from now, that pic will still have meaning.

It's a great photo, but I'm more in awe of sports photos from yesteryear, when they used flash bulbs, and you got maybe one picture every 45 seconds. Modern cameras can take 6 pictures per second (and are auto-focusing), so your chances of getting an awesome shot are tremendously higher.

But yeah, great photo. Oof. I wouldn't want to be what's left of that guy. He looks like a Picasso painting.

I don't give a shiat about boxing and that photo doesn't come close to Ali-Liston. Ali-Liston's photo is one of the greatest in history.

2012-04-30 09:28:18 PM
No.

Now get off of Mr. Ali's lawn.

2012-04-30 09:31:19 PM
ummm...no subby, not even close to Ali-Liston, and probably won't even be the best boxing photo of this year.

but try again later with your limited concept of 'greatest'.

Lando Lincoln: Modern cameras can take 6 pictures per second (and are auto-focusing), so your chances of getting an awesome shot are tremendously higher.

That's for consumer-grade ones. Professional cameras can take 10-12/second.

/could still get decent football photos even when I had to use manual focus - you just have to take a sh*tton and a few will turn out well

From a technical standpoint, it's a better picture than Ali-Liston.

Likewise, from a technical standpoint, the HRT F112 is a better car than the Shelby GT 350.

2012-04-30 10:33:05 PM
I don't know what's the big hub-bub over the picture. I've seen similar images on sports science (or some other science show) where they used slow motion video to capture a guy getting punched in the face. His face moved, but his nose didn't, so this is no longer a surpise.

2012-04-30 10:36:13 PM
I took the same pic when I was an intern. Shoot a little boxing and you'll get that shot. But the Ali-Liston shot is great photojournalism. It shows two elements and the conflict between them. You can infer the story beyond the picture. And it was coverage of a world-wide event.

Well, that's enough to make me want to never get in a boxing ring. I mean, I never did before, but I especially don't want to now.

/hope he has insurance
//he probably doesn't
///if he did, it just got cancelled
////or he can no longer afford it
//probably lied about his profession if he did have it before
//going to jail now for insurance fraud

Tony Pietrantonio takes a punch he'll remember for a long time

Yeah, I get the feeling he won't remember it. Sure, he'll see that picture, but that's like the occasional picture we've had taken at a party when we've already blacked out.

The look on Ali's face is the key to that pic being an icon that transcends boxing or even sports for that matter. In a year or even less that will be just another picture and in 10 years the boxers themselves will be forgotten.

2012-05-01 12:51:51 AM
That is a pretty good photo, in the sense that it is shocking, but as noted above multiple times Ali's had a story behind it. Boxing can be a pretty brutal sport, in more than one occasion I've been forced to literally spit out the other guy's blood and it is not nice. Even with all that I would not even think about not fighting any time soon, not only for all the sport has given me, but the feeling of pure man-to-man competition is a feeling I would not change for anything in the world. Also the fact that it is the only sport that can change completely in the blink of an eye makes it all the more dramatic and beautiful at the same time.

Came here for the Jersey Joe Walcott, photo. Nice. As for the Ali-Liston photo, there's a whole story about the old photographer you can see between Ali's legs. He made the rookie photog go on the other side. The rook took the picture and the old guy missed the shot of his career. He has teh sad on his face.

Yeah, for the next five to ten years.
