My sister had a miniature chihuahua, the thing was demon spawn. It was no bigger than a hamster, and I always wanted to hit it on the back of the head to see if the eyeballs would pop out. It was seriously bug-eyed. My sister attracts weird animals.

I'm not an engineer OR a doctor, but I'm given to understand the nerves of the inner ear and the connections of the brain are a bit more delicate and less forgiving than a granite mountain. Not to mention that one seldom goes from the bottom of the ocean to the moon in one leap--even modern technology is not that good yet.

Someone asked up thread why such a tiny dog. I was partnered with a dog from Dogs for the Deaf for nearly 11 years. Mine was an english shepherd - 40-50 lbs. When you apply with them they ask you for a general size preference, but warn you that they can only TRY to get the "right" size. DFD's dogs, in majority, are rescued from various shelters; some are directly donated/surrendered from breeders or families. A minority are older dogs whose first owners have passed away (and yes, they are reassigned if possible). If you live in an apartment, you want a smaller dog! At the time when I applied for mine, I lived with my parents. They have a defunct farm, so lots of land to run and exercise, so I asked for a larger one. They go by ability, personality, and other requirements more than size. These include things like energy level, strength, intelligence, so on. Some dogs don't 'make it' as full service dogs, but make great companion dogs. They're also adopted out.

I'm delighted to see DFD in the news, but I had to frown at one part where it says she only had to pay $1 for hers. 11 years ago DFD required $100 refundable deposit to apply/get a dog, and the waiting list was pretty long and I imagine it still is. It was about a year before I even got news that they'd found a match, a little longer before I actually GOT my good buddy. After a year that $100 was returned to me. My poor dog died from cancer almost two years ago. I contacted DFD to tell them, then checked their website to see what was required to reapply for a new one. The refundable has gone up to $500. I'm an unemployed college student... I can barely scrape together enough to pay for bills plus health expenses. I've been trying to sell off stuff to get that amount, but in two years, I'm only up to $210. I miss having a dog around - they do help immensely. All the things you don't realize you're missing, all the time you waste waiting anxiously for things... I'll get another one someday, I hope.

Surely you can put the word out to your friends? Or even here on Fark? And raise the money for your dog in a day or so (with some left over for vet care and food)? It's not like you want a pampered designer vanity pet, you need the dog to help with your life! I have deaf relatives, if they were poor and needed a dog I'd help them raise money no problem.
