clipperbox: JusticeandIndependence: I don't remember allowing that kind of stache when I was in. He may be a SeaBee but not a Marine

i was in the navy in the 90's. it was almost as if mustaches, smoking, and dirty coffee cups were mandatory.

/grew a mustache for about 2 weeks at sea
//looked like a complete moron

The dirty coffee mug is a big thing to some people. Some of those mugs would have a layer of brown that covered the inside. I was assigned to work with maintenance officer and was for warned if I washed his mug I would be in deep Kimchi, so I let the higher ups take care of their mugs and made coffee.

One of my coworkers did that to a CPOs mug because she was grossed out over the gunk in the mug. The CPO about died because it took a few years to get his mug coffee layered so drinking it tasted right. It ruined his day.

My other coworker used to say, "Why are CPOs/Officers uniforms tan? So the coffee stains would not show."

what_now: talulahgosh: alright i have to ask, why the bath?

Well..he's been working out. He's probably all sweaty, and not the good kind of sweaty.

I've got a friend who's over in Afghanistan right now, spent a week in Kyrgyzstan before he got there and said the tents were beyond odiferous.

So yeah, not just a bath, but probably a full decontamination and a complete detailing.

Depends on how long they've been there without bathing.

That makes sense. It's kinda how whiskey and other liquors are distilled in barrels that have been charred on the inside or were used to ferment/distill something previously. It adds a bit of something.

*Sigh,* that reminds me that I've had lots of coffee this winter and almost no sunlight. If I could swap the color of my teeth and skin I'd be in really great shape right now. :(

Ok so maybe you or someone here could answer this for me (this is directed towards the mustaches on the guns)... what the hell is with that style of mustache showing up everywhere?! Claire's has a whole farking line of mustache jewelry, I've been seeing a lot of shirts with the mustache on it and even saw someone driving earlier today with a huge mustache decal on their hood not to mention other assorted mustache accessories inside their car. All of them modeled after that same type of stache

The SH-60 det OIC on my last deployment wore a name patch on his flight suit that said LCDR Heywood Jablomie.

My favorite T-shirt I saw in the Navy had a surfaced Trident sub sailing towards a sunset, except the sun was a mushroom cloud and the caption said "24 empty missile tubes, mushroom clouds....it's Miller time!"

My father's ANG unit was attached to the 1701st Provisional Tactical Air
Refueling Wing in Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and they had a contest for the
ranks to suggest a unit insignia.

He suggested this:

starland.com

Because he remembered that the USS ENTERPRISE's hull number was NCC-1701.

It got rejected because they couldn't use any copyrighted symbols.

It is a cherished memory of him for me because while he was always
supportive of my geekiness, he really didn't share it, and I was tickled that
he remembered such an esoteric piece of STAR TREK trivia.
