Lamb is delicious.

I'd imagine you should be able to taste it if you're not getting (at least mostly) lamb. It has a pretty distinct flavor.

Since when has Doner Kebab been 100% lamb? I'm pretty sure never.

The pic accompanying TFA makes it seem like the meat in question has more in common with gyro meat than it does with a lamb shank. And gyro meat is "lamb" about as much as hot dogs are "pork" or "beef".

That was my question as well. OTOH, from the time I first saw the "haunch" on a spit in a restaurant, I thought it should be "Donner Kebab"....

As a non european who sees these things in europe a lot, let me ask a question:

1. You have that big turning thing of meat.
2. The guy shaves it off and it tastes good. ok.
3. At the end of the day, with it half gone, he just leaves it there until the next day he is open.
4. Isn't it then farking nasty? do you guys make a point of only eating new ones?

Well that's just farking great. My husband has an allergy to beef. Bullshiat like this could be life-threatening. I guess at least the article is about the UK though, but I'm betting if it can happen there, it happens here.

Don't let him eat gyros. In the states, I think most gyro meat is a blend of lamb, beef, and bread crumbs. I didn't know about that last one until Mrs. Gough and Gough Jr. finally figured out that they were gluten-sensitive.

Trading standards officers test lamb kebabs in 20 restaurants... and found that NONE contained just lamb

All kebabs contained a mixture of pork, beef or poultry
Only three lamb curries tested had just lamb
Four curries contained none at all
Muslims may be unwittingly eating pork
One kebab contained almost 20 times the safe levels of food colouring

So headline reads none contained just lamb, but two sentences underneath we find that three contained just lamb.

Breaking news, 0% of British Journalists can get shiat right.

The problem with that is the giant hunk o'meat has a lot of thermal mass and is fairly dense. I would imagine that this would allow for it to stay in the danger zone longer than is kosher.

They don't need to. The outside of the slab forms a hard, crusty exterior that protects the inner parts from contamination. That's why they always start by shaving off the dry bits from the outside.

How about instead of biatching about British journalists you work on your reading comprehension? Kebab and curry are different things. No kebab tested was just lamb, only three curries out of 19 were just lamb.

A yup. Buyer beware and all that. Find either kosher or halah or, in the case of my local Greek place, a matron that will gladly talk shiat about "places x, y and z and their use of frozen crap."

You would have figured that as Businesses they didn't need to be inspected by The Government, and that self-regulation and The Market would have ensured proper labeling.

Thanks for the heads-up. We never eat gyros or any Greek food, for that matter. I've had gyros before, but there aren't really any places around where we currently live that serve them. The place where we used to have lamb kebabs somewhat regularly is also in the place we moved away from a year ago. I'll miss them, and I *think* they were all lamb (or at least not combined with beef), since hubby never had any problems....

Yeah. Ever been to a meat plant? There's one I visited a few times, parking was a biatch because it was in a crowded district. They had 1 parking space reserved for an MD, for employee health inspections I guess. They had 4 separate parking spaces reserved individually, for specifically named Rabbis. Not at all a Jewish area, either. I think they just know they can get higher margins if it's kosher.

Well, it's only cow's beef, so he can still have bison and many other substitutes. Also, he can still eat well-done beef, so we're thinking it's a protein in beef that breaks down at a certain temperature.... He wasn't always like this, he developed it in his late 20s.

There is a strong correleration between blood alcohol levels and a willingness to buy a doner kebab.

I wouldn't bet the farm on that.

From seeing a kebab shop set up it seems they start cooking the last nights one and just toss the outside layer in the trash.

Technically, halal places are also supposed to regulate teh shiat out of that (if the local Indian place and local halal delis are anything to note)...

...and I expect if any of those places are certified halal, there's going to be some very interesting conversations if they're among those where pork was found in the kebab "lamb spam" (as I've heard it affectionately termed)...

/honestly won't be surprised to see some places lose certification over this...
//yes, much like kosher certification, halal certification can be lost if it is found the place ISN'T being kept up to standards
///especially as this is in the UK where there's a non-negligible number of kebab and Indian takeout places that likely ARE certified halal--probably more so than in my local area, what with a large East Indies expatriate population

Nah, I think you should have to add three seldom-eaten game animals to compensate for the beef. If you want to count bison, fine, but you'd also have to eat rabbit...then maybe, squirrel or rattlesnake.

Not mixed together.
