I used to love TotalFark for a number of reasons. In Literland there's less of a sense of community and being a TFer allows you to hang out in the clubhouse and make friends.

Not that I ever made any friends because of it mind you, but I know a lot of people were able to make connections and have a lot of fun in the TFD every day.

I liked it for the upcoming links and being able to comment on politics threads before they got bogged down in trolls once they hit the politics tab.

The impression I get is that Fark works the opposite way round from most other sites. For free you get the best stuff, carefully selected. Pay money and you get a torrent of rubbish amongst which you have to discern the pearls.

b. children misbehaving on aeroplanes ("Crotchfruit")
c. tipping ("Validate me. I've got a liberal arts degree and a piercing")

since these now make up approximately 85% of the free stuff.

What about Ultra Reddit?

I've been a liter since early 2001 or so, under assorted handles that I've forgotten. Did a six month stint as a TFer back when I first found this den of scum and villainy.

I wish there was a way to recover my old handle, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was.

my unbiased opinion is that in the last few tf threads to be greenlit I see way less annoying people than there used to be. But I am permanently and happily banned from there, so I dont really give a shiat. Fark lite is much more to my tastes these days. just regular discussions about topics.

Because checking/savings accounts are not currently paying interest, so that $60 a year may as well be spent rather than just sitting there and decreasing in purchasing power.

The other side of that coin is that TF doesn't put up with a particular type of bullshiat. Those caught violating the generally accepted guidelines* are more likely to be called out and publicly shamed, where in the general Fark queue they might be ignored or lost in the brouhaha.
