I'm in my 40s and I was six years old in 1976. It was a LONG TIME AGO. That's like two generations ago. I can't see today's teens hip to Travolta's studman today.

Well it was 36 years ago. The whole premise of Back to the Future was how different things were only 30 years ago. There could be a scene with the kid with the Justin Bieber haircut who's wearing his antiquated Star Wars shirt ironically is tweeting on his iPhone about the batshiat crazy biatch throwing things around with her mind like she just escaped from Azkaban. No one in 1976 would know WTF he was doing. And John Travolta was a teen heartthrob and not the closeted Scientologist from Pulp Fiction.

I get it. Her phrasing was weird though. It's an updated version simply because it's being redone in a contemporary setting. It's not like there's much to do to update it by design other than filming it today with today's actors and cultural references.

They did do a Carrie set in modern times, it was called The Rage: Carrie 2 and it was meh. However the original Carrie wasn't all that great, aside from the gotcha ending, it's not like the original movie was so perfect that they shouldn't try to re-make it.

Tv shows and movies from as recent as the early 90s suffer from "the mobile phone problem" where the entire plot would be screwed up if any of the characters had mobile phones or internet access.

Because she's looking at De Palma's best movie, and extrapolating from there that Carrie must still be on top of the rest of cinema by association.

it is better than the original movie, closer to the book and holds up well. While I am going to watch Chloe in the new one because she is awesome.... Carrie doesn't need another remake.

Salem's Lot has been remade. The remake is EXCELLENT and makes the original crapfest movie look like the turd it is. Pet Semetary NEEDS a remake. That movie could be SOOO damn good now, and I love the original... but I could use a version with 100 percent less Tasha Yar. She is just so terrible in that film. Christine is another King work that is crying out for a remake. The original holds up pretty well, but it really needs an update that holds closer to the incredible novel.

this. cell phones were expensive and unwieldy. in the 90's cell phones were rare, you either called someone's house or business or generally you didn't speak to them. now, you don't call "Bill's house", you call Bill. Everyone has a mobile phone. Funny thing is - if someone these days doesn't answer when you call, you KNOW that they are ignoring you....

/an aside here. The old BBC show "Keeping Up Appearances" had Hyacinth (the main character) get a cell phone in one episode. It was this huge bagged monstrosity. No surprise that cell phones took until ... oh what like 2002-3 before they really started to take off.

frepnog: wildsnowllama: frepnog: Lumbar Puncture: Zombie Eater: Do we need another one? We had the original, a shiatty sequel, a made-for-TV remake in 2002, and now this? I'm sure King's got other stuff that's up for remakes. Salem's Lot? Pet Semetary? How about...Stand By Me? *runs*

I'd go for a remake of Firestarter.

Stand By Me is fine the way it is.

actually... that is one that really doesn't need a remake. the original holds up pretty well and is almost word for word the novel. the only reason to remake it now would be to make it more gruesome.

Till they break out the papier-mâché fireballs at the end.

still looks better than some CGI fireballs would. at least they were REAL fireballs.

Really? Because even watching that as a kid I thought that looked shiatty. You could see the strings they were on. I mean the rest of the movie is great, but the end looked cheesy.

I liked Black Swan...up until the ending. (WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP SPOILER ALERT WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP SPOILER ALERT) Ok, so either Portman stabbed herself in the dressing room before she went on stage or she didn't and was just smoking crack and thought she did. Neither works. If she stabbed herself, she would have been obviously bleeding all over the place the entire time she was on stage and probably wouldn't have been able to make it through the performance. If she didn't stab herself, why was everybody panicking at the very end like she had?

She's just trying to convince everyone that it's not a completely unnecessary remake.

They did do a Carrie set in modern times, it was called The Rage: Carrie 2 and it was meh. However the original Carrie wasn't all that great, aside from the gotcha ending, it's not like the original movie was so perfect that they shouldn't try to re-make it.

they already remade Carrie in modern times.

They really started becoming common around 1999-2000 when most of the carriers started switching to digital service, which opened up enough bandwidth that they we able to start offering cheaper plans than were possible when the service was analog. Digital also allowed the phone size to shrink immensely, so instead of the Zack Morris special you could slip this into your pocket:

I'd put this girl in a remake of Christine. Of course I'd change the main character to a female, but keep the best friend as a guy. He's a friend zone guy. So when the new girl in town shows up, Chloe's character is attracted to her as is the friend zone guy, thus creating the tension between the two best friends but this time it's got a new bisexual triangle thing going on.

I'd choose a more phallic car this time to highlight this aspect, perhaps a beat up Corvette would do it. As Chloe gets more butch, the car repairs itself and looks more and more like the flying dildo it will eventually become.

The difference in time between 1976 and now is the same as between 1940 and 1976.

They'll never find another character to outdo Piper Laurie as Carrie's mom. Those scenes, that dialog is so iconic, I don't see them making it any better. It wasn't so much Carrie herself that defined how good that book really was, but the dynamic between her and the mother. The trope of the religious nutball parents has already been done to death.

I think the original Pet Sematary film was fine as it is. Fred Gwynne was perfect as the neighbor.
'Salem's Lot was a meh for both versions
The original Shining was the best; you just can't top it even with today's SFX

You are incorrect. There is one way they can cast the mom with a great actress that could bring something interesting to the movie...
