This kid must tickle so many fetishes in Japan.

/Seriously, what is with that country and cross-dressing boys? There's like a transvestite character in a shiatload of anime.

RexTalionis: Seriously, what is with that country and cross-dressing boys?

You mean aside from the long cultural tradition of cross-dressing in high art, as Kabuki is men only, what's with it? Not much.

It's only common recently, near as I can tell, and even then 90% of it or more is joking as much as anything else. Take the average Japanese and you're gonna find an animist with a penchant for conservative lifestyle punctuated by extremely abhorrent behavior whilst drunk followed by a period of extra conservative atonement.

Real Japanese gays are only distinguishable from American ones by accent. They're not all cross dressers.

Now, the thing about anime is that it's VERY conservative with character design and arch-types. You can't write a manga without making sure all your characters fill at least one of the roles, and most studios crank out carbon copy characters as well. So the transvestite will be found along with the maid, the punk, the old man, the witch, the school girl, the fighter, etc. Very complex little knot of culture.

I... That is just odd. And seriously auto-tuned.

I'm not going to rag on Japan for this stuff. It's too easy a target.

Those guys are the "Te bra shika" (hand bra deer)

It's a parody of the Russian children's character where they have to hold in spring loaded nipples with their hands and cooperate to retrieve things from high places without using their hands or face grueling punishments like drinking habenero sauce.

Link

intro: "There's many stange animals we know, but there's more we don't, like these hand bra deer who must hold in their chest with their hands."

I'm surprised he's so accepted, but for the foreigner aspect and not the cross-dressing. I guess he looks sort of asian with all that weird make-up, but still he's not of Glorious Nippon.

Besides, they're not going to grow beards and weight lift, are they? Work with what you're given.

Okay, so apparently Japan is infectious on a scale much larger than originally thought. Someone might want to pass the message to Madagascar so they can shut their port now.

Everyone say's Japan is so weird but what this kid is doing that some much different from what Marylin Manson did. At least this kid did not get a boob job.

His music isn't so bad, given that it sounds like the sort of stuff you'd hear while the credits on anime rolled, and his look is totally in keeping with the syntho-Western look you see in a lot of Japanese girl-oriented media (video games, fashion, etc.). And it kind of works out as not too creepy just because frankly, given his underlying structure, if he'd tried to butch up he'd just look like a girly-boy trying to George Michael himself. If he went glam-boi he'd look like an ultra-girly-boy being too cutesy to be anything but precious and equally dismissable. Taking the cross-dressing path he can follow a teen starlet mode until either the hormones kick in or he goes full Mana.

Man, The Japanese have some serious gender identity issues and I'm not referring just to the article. Everything concerning their pop culture is just farked up gender wise.

Before this gets ugly and stupid:

Going into the article/video with my predisposition towards irritation at gender-bending artifice for its own sake, I have to say that this kid is cool as shiat.

As much as any unique pop icon, this dude's got the goods to back up a totally interesting act. So fark it. I'm apparently as weird as a Japanese schoolgirl.

2012-04-30 05:41:34 AM
and THIS is why you keep your kids away from anime.

/wtf japan.

2012-04-30 05:42:24 AM
I was just saying to someone the other day how it's scandalous that teenage kids here in the UK are all listening to bloody Adele and bloody Ed Sheeran. It's all too bloody nice. When I was a kid, I remember having to hide behind the sofa to shelter myself from my dad's rage and confusion at seeing Sigue Sigue Sputnik or The Cure on the telly.

I am now a father myself and I am confused by this Yohio person. This is good. Now he just needs to go one step further and offend me. Then I will truly be happy.

Torqueknot: Man, The Japanese have some serious gender identity issues and I'm not referring just to the article. Everything concerning their pop culture is just farked up gender wise.

Not really, you're just ignorant.

Japan has a long theatrical tradition of male-only theatre (kabuki) where men can carve out a profession by playing female roles. One of the 'hottest' male actors in Japan took the female roles in his kabuki company (Nakamura Shidou) and no one questions his masculinity over it. Actually he still does the occasional turn as a female in kabuki.

Unlike the West, the male-only tradition has not been gotten rid of. It's still perfectly culturally normal therefore for a guy to act female for theatrical purposes.

They also have the reverse although only for the last 100 years - Takaradzuka Kagekidan, where all the roles are played by females. The lead female role is obligated to appear masculine even in their private lives (short hair, no dresses, use male speech forms). Some of the woman are darn handsome.

Oh no, a country doesn't have the same gender rules as my own puritanical pit of hell. They're messing with my image of the Japanese as boring, regimented grey-suited bespectacled versions of us. There must be something wrong with them!!!

WTF? I had no idea the Japanese even knew about Cheburashka. What's with the parody, does "Cheburashka" resemble the Japanese words for hand and bra?

2012-04-30 07:06:09 AM
He kinda looks like a human vocaloid... the looks of Kagamine Rin, the voice of Kagamine Ren.

moof: does "Cheburashka" resemble the Japanese words for hand and bra?

More than resemble. The don't have the ch- sound except in the sound chi (ち) so che becomes te (て)

Now te can mean hand (手)bra is of course bra (ブラ)and shika (鹿) is deer.

Cheburashka to Teburashika to "te bra shika" which is "Hand-bra deer"

The show is a Japanese comedy show whose name I forget that does a lot of funny shiat. They also do a series of sketches where a fat chick with giant eyebrows is the sexiest character and her hot friend is ignored as guest stars (like the latest boys' band idols) fight over her. They also do a parody of boy's love comics where the running gag is the girls in the room are sent our for various reasons and as soon as they go the men start to undress and then the girls come back in and they have to explain what they're doing. Funny shiat.

Bibari and Lui

The boss is chewing they guy out for bad reports. He sends Oshima to the basement to get some files. Once she's gone he starts talking about the office "love project" She comes back and he's all "THIS IS THE WRONG FILE. GET THE ONE IN THE VERY, VERY BACK." and when she's gone it's like "The obstacle has been removed" Then they're all naked and she comes back and the boss says "Don't buy such cheap shirts. How can you do your job in such cheap shirts!"

etc etc, I don't have time to translate it all. I have skyrim to re-play.

Wow, I never would have thought to see Yohio on Fark, especially considering there are far stranger Japanese artists. Granted, Yohio has the double "strangeness" of being born non-Japanese; however, any look at the Oricon these days could show you that you don't necessarily have to be Japanese to make it to the big-time in Japan (see: Korea). As far as "weird Japanese" goes I would say Kyari Pamyu Pamyu is freaking odd; though she fits in the category of Trying Too Hard.
