Calmamity: Jesus Built My Hotrod by Ministry is, for me, hands down the best driving song.

by the time it kicks in I'm going 20mph faster than when it started.

Listening to that while driving will get me arrested.

I am sensing an almost complete lack of love for Deep Purple and so I humbly proffer my two recommendations from their oeuvre: Highway Star and Smoke on the Water. On another note, when cruising through the ghetto, it's nice to have CCR's Run Through The Jungle as a soundtrack.

Movies and TV have killed that song to me. Now it's a punch line instead of an actual song.

As many farkers have said, list is a total failure without Red Barchetta.

Some of the other songs on my driving playlist, in no particular order:

Jimmy Buffett's cover of Southern Cross
Grateful Dead - Touch of Grey and Uncle John's Band
Poison - Ride the Wind (just trust me on this one)
Information Society - Move Out
Billy Joel - My Life & Second Wind
anything by Queen
Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama & Gimme Three Steps
Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty - Stop Draggin' My Heart Around

In the comments above just about every song I have put into a driving mix is there, so my compliments to you all for your musical taste.

DontSpitOnMyMind: Explosions in the Sky's The Only Moment we were Alone is my go-to song when I am driving at night. Very relaxing and sets the mood perfectly. (new window)

Are you my brother? He introduced me to them, and I will agree... night driving or snow driving. Mine is The Catastrophe and the Cure though.

Annabelle Lee - Stevie Nicks
In These Shoes? - Kirsty MacColl

When I was 20 I drove to Oregon (from WI) and always play 'Here Comes the Sun' when I started out each morning.

2/25. The only ones I would consider road songs were Ooh La La and 500 Miles. There were some good songs on the list, just not driving songs. My suggestions:

It probably would have helped in TFA, if they'd mentioned that said tracks were for certain moods/destinations. While I'm not tossing on the Stevie Wonder on a regular basis, I *might* do so if it was a date night.

Okay, I'd probably put The Church on, but I get their point even if they didn't deliver said point very well.

She Sells Sanctuary makes me want to drive very fast... and the opening sequence to Layer Cake doesn't help.

My driving down to Florida from Michigan soundtracks usually include a variety of Eagles, America, Bob Dylan, Elton John, John Denver, Jim Croce, and Neil Young.

Glad to see this get covered. My personal favorite Pearl Jam album, and an all-around great driving music album. Matter of fact, that's what's currently in my CD player.

The penultimate driving tune, far better than RVM, which is also good, but in my opinion, the better driving, "Get the hell out" song is Untitled/MFC, really from any of their live shows, though the Album version on Yield is a great tune all by itself.

Also, It's Evolution, Baby...

2. The Boys Are Back in Town (Thin Lizzy)
3. Georgia Overdrive (Fred Eaglesmith)
4. Buzzbomb From Pasadena (Dead Kennedys)
5. Dragula (Rob Zombie)

-all on a loop.
I got pulled over for doing a burnout on a green light one time. When the cop came up to the car and asked if there was a reason why I was driving like that I pointed to the radio and said 'Sorry- Radar Love just came on'. He kinda laughed, told me to cut it out, and let me go.

I tend to listen to the same stuff when I drive as I do at home... Captain Beefheart, The Pop Group, Pere Ubu, Ween, Zappa, Z, Glass Eye, Hound Dog Taylor & The Houserockers, James Cotton, XTC, Beck, The Buzzcocks, Gang Of Four, Television, & a bunch of other oddball rock & jazz.

When I'm waiting on my wife in the store parking lot & the windows are down I get odd looks from nearby soccer moms loading up their minivans when this issues forth from the speakers.

I am a weird, weird bastard.
