now that's an interesting question...we already know that a state cannot leave the Union. the civil war settled that question for us. But can a state 'split off' into another state?

hmm.

Why not?

No Cal and So Cal have been discussing it for years. Just depends on if the public vote allows it.

you mean like West Virginia?

Maybe they could be West Michigan

Texas has it as part of their constitution that they can split into 5 separate states. I see no reason why the loser half of a state can't split off to go be fat somewhere else.

The peninsula could just start sucking up to the government of Wisconsin and ask to join their state. Then we all wouldn't have to buy new flags.

This comes up every now and then. It never goes anywhere. But good luck to them.

as SOON as the UP leaves MI, there will be a movement to split WUP from EUP. LOL
this is the problem with balkanization.
Plus imagine the humor in DC when they have to find room for 20-200 new senators and 10-100+ new representatives.
bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

So if they succeed will we have 49.6666666666666 states instead of 50?

2012-04-29 06:54:25 PM
It can be done. It would probably have to be approved by the residents of the area that want to become their own state, and also be approved by the state legislature and governor. There is also the tax dollars that must be paid back to the "original" state, for any state services that occur in that part of the state that wants to become their own state. That is offset by the state taxes that the residents of the area that wants to become their own state have already paid or would have paid.

Atricle IV Sec 3 of the US Constitution:

New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.

It has nothing to do with the public allowing it. It takes an act of congress to create a new state. Texas' constitution gives it the power to split up into five states but it won't happen unless the feds give the okay.

I'd be interested to know as well. There's really no precedent other than West Virginia, but that was an unusual case obviously.

I've heard that it's possible with the approval of both Congress and the legislature of the state in question, but I have no source for that.

when I was in high school this very thing was proposed.

the constitution says that no portion of any state may seek statehood without the approval of the majority of said state. it may even be a super majority or such...

I hear this on and on, the Dems want to break a state, the Gop wants to break a state, smaller and smaller populations, some of our states already have LESS than the # the census wants prior to moving a congressional district.

I worked with a lady from Michigan last fall. I asked her about Detroit and she looked bewildered.. her response: "Oh we live on the upper peninsula, we are not really part of the rest of Michigan." Kinda surprised me. But I know nothing of American geography or politics.. being Canadian and all that.

We fought a war with Ohio over Toledo (why anyone wanted Toledo, I can't imagine). The U.P. was our consolation prize. It worked out well considering the mines in the U.P.

As for succession...not going to happen. I can't imagine the rest of the state going along with it.

Does anyone think that 709,760 per representative compared to the 70k or so when we were formed is good for the country?
NO ONE likes their representation because they are not actually being represented.

Eh. If they really want to go, they should be allowed to go.

Michigan, as a state, is a startling case of chronic mismanagement -- rebuilding should have begun in the late 70s, when it was clear that the Big Three were going to run into trouble. The rebuilding . . . has still not begun in earnest. Talk, yes; serious action, not so much.

Detroit is amazing. Good and bad. But the bad is more amazing.

I've lived in seven states, from Vermont to Florida to Nebraska to Michigan, and only two of them (both in the Northeast) had halfway decent state governments. Michigan has the worst return on taxes of anywhere I've ever lived. People complain about Massachusetts, but by god there's real infrastructure and services there.

Michigan is nice in a lot of ways. Don't get me wrong.

It's obvious you're not from Michigan otherwise you'd know that south central (just south of Lansing) is the "Alabama" of Michigan.
