No idea how this got greenlit, but hell yeah. Here are the lyrics for anyone who doesn't understand them, and can read Norwegian.

Hoerer du natten
Foel rikets brodd
En gammel sjel i en gammel hud
Det gamle fyrtaarn paa norskekysten
Et spir

Smak det uhellige gral
Blodet jeg utgytte
I aarets tauseste natt
Klor dypt, bit hardt

Djevelen vaar herre
Hjerteloes aarstid
Skal knekke deg, brenne deg
Gift er kuren
Ligger kaldt og skinner i eldgamle minner
Nordbundet nedenfra
Nordover

Tenk paa doeden
Tenk paa doeden ofte
til alle foelelser er fjernet
min demon, mitt liv, mitt alt,
kun helvete faar slaa sin rot i hunlet
der foer
hjertet fans
inn i granskauen
bekken er en sti og fossen er frosset
er det deg kong vinter, ingen ringere enn

list of BM albums

Did you buy all those this week? I ask because, if so, where the hell did you find Phallus Cult?

Also, I'm surprised Vader and Deicide didn't make your top 25 for 2011.

I wish I had bought them all! No, this week I just bought Cloaked in Eternal Darkness. I suspect Phallus Cult was a vinyl only release, so it may be pretty hard to find. I am almost ready to be serious about buying a turntable, so I think eventually it will be mine, no matter how it was released.

As for Vader and Deicide - they weren't bad albums, though I was a bit disappointed with Vader in particular, but I didn't like them more than anything on my list.

But also, Ulcerate, Mitochondrion, Sonne Adam, Maim, Entrails, Disma, Corpsessed, Cianide, Autopsy, Blaspherian, and Beyond Creation all had albums in 2011 that I would put ahead of either Vader or Deicide on the list for death metal.

Been listening to a lot of these guys lately:

Dismember - Time Heals Nothing
Dismember - Shadows of the Mutilated

The Crown - Deathexplosion
The Crown - (I am) Hell

Nile - Permitting the Noble Dead to Descend to the Underworld
Nile - Kem Khefa Kheshef

You can say I've finally gotten into Death Metal. I've been into Melodic Death Metal for many years but haven't gotten into the 'true' Death Metal genre until recently. It's a shame the two of the three bands I used as a litmus test for the genre (Bolt Thrower, Bloodbath, Nile) really convinced me to put Death Metal on the back burner for a while. I've always appreciated Nile on some level but Bolt Thrower and Bloodbath still bore me to tears. Dismember is the band I've wanted Bolt Thrower and Bloodbath to be.

You know, this is probably a good place to ask - what would you guys all say are the definitive death metal bands/albums? Not necessarily the ones you like best, but the ones that every death metal fan needs?

I'll start with some obvious ones like Nile (LOVE "Those Whom the Gods Detest," I can't wait for the new one) and Entombed's old early 90s albums, like "Clandestine" and "Left Hand Path".

I'm feeling a bit lazy to type things out, but almost everything I can think of (and then a lot more) are on Leader O'Cola's profile (though some are sure to be hard to find).

A couple others of note -
anything by Death
Suffocation - Pierced from Within
Cryptopsy - Once Was Not

I know you have an encyclopedic knowledge of the genre, Leader, and you could certainly teach many advanced grad-level courses on it. I bow before you. Mainly though I was just curious about what the consensus was as far as the essentials.

Basically I was wondering if there were any vital albums that had flown below my radar.

Solve_Et_Coagula: Basically I was wondering if there were any vital albums that had flown below my radar.

I've been researching this subject lately and I have a list, but most of that list I haven't heard the whole albums of so I feel I don't yet have the authority to 'rec' them. Here are some CDs I DO own.

I highly recommend Death's 'Scream Bloody Gore', 'Leprosy', and 'Symbolic' if you don't have them.

Dismembered's first two albums I hear are incredible, while I don't own those I can certainly recommend their album 'The God That Never Was' from personal experience.

Therion's '...Of Darkness', 'Beyond Sanctorum', and 'Ho Drakon Ho Megas' are great.

Cryptopsy's 'None So Vile'. I don't care much for the vocals but the music is incredible.

The Crown's 'Deathrace King' is some great Death/Thrash.

Rudra's 'Brahmavidya: Primordial I' and 'Brahmavidya:Trancendendental I' are two farking incredible Blackened Death Metal albums that include a lot of Hindu folk elements. Also their less 'blackened' 'Kurukshetra'. If you like Nile you should love these guys.

That's what I have from my humble stash of Death Metal CDs. Hope there is something there for you.

Can't help much with straight-up death metal, but I loves me some progressive death. Every death metal fan needs a little prog.

Cynic, Atheist and Death are the forefathers.
Obscura - Cosmogenesis and Omnivium - This is what Death would sound like today if Chuck was still around.
Kalisia - Cybion - 14 years in the making, a masterpiece
Beyond Creation - The Aura - similar to Obscura - insane bass
Opeth - everyone reading this knows them, but if not, Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Ghost Reveries
Be'lakor - The Frail Tide and Stone's Reach - more on the melodeath end, but the best the genre has to offer
Blotted Science - The Machinations of Dementia and The Animation of Entomology - instrumental madness
Dan Swano - Moontower and Crimson
The Chasm - Procession to the Infraworld
Pavor - Furioso

There are plenty of others, but that's a good start.

Other than that, the Dopesmoker reissue can't get into my hands quickly enough.

Ignore the band Obscura, get the album instead.

Also, The Chasm's Deathcult For Eternity (The Triumph) is an amazing album light years ahead of it's time.

Aeonite: Are people liking this stuff ironically because really, I have no idea why this stuff is at all popular.

Yeah, I like it, unironically and unapologetically. I'm a big black metal fan. Sure, the corpse paint and atmospheric stuff might take some getting used to, but I've liked this music for a long time. I'm in my 30s, have a white collar job, a wife and kids, and I don't live in my parents' basement.

For what it's worth.

Oh, and thanks, all, for the DM recommendations. I have several of the higher profile albums already (Death, Cynic, etc.) but there are lots of good recs for me to go check out. I'm kind of like you, Kliffoth, in that I've sort of been orbiting around death metal for a long time without digging too deeply into it. I'm more a black/thrash/prog/melodic death guy, but I've been digging into the histories of doom and death metal recently, and this can be a little overwhelming without some guidelines.

Yeah I pretty much went Thrash>Prog>Melodic Death>Black>Folk>(Funeral)Doom>Death Metal. I don't see myself ever getting heavily into Sludge or Power Metal though.

If it hasn't already crossed your radar, definitely check out Incantation's Onwards to Golgotha (or anything else they've done - they're among the progenitors of death/doom - along with Autopsy).

Recent good bands along these lines include Father Befouled, Miasmal, Grave Miasma, and Swallowed.
