Yeah, it was put in a few years back so goalies who were amazing at handling the puck (like Brodeur) couldn't act as a 3rd d-man, retrieve the puck and instantly clear it. It was supposed to allow teams to dump the puck into the corners where they can't play it and create more offensive forechecking.

I don't know, but personally I wouldn't mind seeing the trapezoid go. It doesn't do anything for me. Half the time I see goalies just play the puck in front of the line before it reaches the corners, and some then pass it to themselves behind the net and continue to play it, so to me it's not that effective.

Agreed. Some goalies (Brodeur, Mike Smith to name a couple) could really help launch offensive rushes the other way if they're good with the puck. Let them play it, I say.
