Guntram Shatterhand: So has LOPCATGATA expanded to include everything under the sun now?

For a while now I thought it was easier to make a list of things NOT conspiring against the GOP and therefore America.

It'd be a pretty short list.

PlatinumDragon: Odd; replace "US" with "Canada" in the headline, and that's the exact position of the current Canadian government regarding opposition to a pipeline from the Alberta oilsands to the BC coast and the oilsands operation as a whole.

The Independent Petroleum Association of America's Energy In Depth blog thoroughly debunked so much of what is in "Gasland" in June 2010 that one almost has to conclude that the list of truths in the film was miles shorter than the list of false assertions and contentions.

They sound quite independent. Clearly we will only be getting the most objective and unbiased look at the claims of Gasland from this group. The oil and coal industries have done such a good job debunking anthropomorphic climate change, why not let the natural gas industry debunk all those silly fracking myths too?

We all know now that fracking will create 1,000,000 new jobs and make all our water cleaner. Meanwhile the scourge of solar power continues to destroy the economy and force women to get abortions. When will the madness end?

2012-04-29 04:38:16 PM
Gee this is dumb, do we import any natural gas from Venezuala? At all? (It looks like they import it themselves).

2012-04-29 04:45:52 PM
Thank sweet Jesus right-wing news outlets are here to protect us. It is clear that an oil industry blog's critique of a documentary film invalidates any criticism of the oil and gas industries, forever. What really surprises me is that Soros hasn't teamed up with Venezuela to help employ more Chavez-loving production assistants. SOROS!

But there's something bigger at stake here. It's that what is in the movies might not be real - that filmmakers may take artistic license. Stunning! You can't make me critically think about any art or form of media I consume!

We must begin the War on Werner Herzog. Operation Enduring 'Hey WTF Was The Deal With That Chicken'.

Officially, LOPCATGOPATA has been retired and replaced with LOJCSGPBTGTSA (The List Of Job Creating, Small Government Proposals By The GOP To Save America) since Republicans decided to have a laser-like focus on the economy after the midterm elections.

Unofficially, we'll do it your way.

No. Let's find out and test it empirically. I'm pretty sure we can come up some real assholes to be the control group, and if we buy the Hollywood Upstairs Medical College hot dogs, we can get it by the ethical review board.

Shouldn't there be a rule about disclosing all funders of speech? And you can't use titles like "Americans for Apple Pie and Puppies" Actually have to declare your position in your groups name, and make individual contributors names easy to access.

All right, in a thread the other day I was just saying how Big Oil wanted the government to go easy on sanctioning Saddam so they could make profits off of Iraq oil, and now they want to do the same thing to Iran. Which, of course, doesn't jibe with the right's "let's nuke Ahnmadinnerplate 'afore he nukes us!" mentality.

wedun: shivashakti: That may be true, but it doesn't invalidate criticism against US oil and gas groups.

Granted, the documentary might be propaganda. But although we have a tendency to view the term "propaganda" negatively, sometimes propaganda can be right (albeit, it's usually distorted and misleading). Let's not forget that NewsBusters can be a source of propaganda itself.

Is NewsBusters right? Is GasLand right? I'm sure both are right in some parts and wrong in others. I'm sure there's exaggeration on both sides.

Chavez may be a wacko, but that doesn't mean he's wrong to criticize the US.

As you can see both sides offer valid criticisms that merit equal consideration.

So... vote Republican?

Felgraf: I just want a law passed that demands the natural gas companies make some effort to capture and sequester any of the helium that comes from their drilling. Because we're @#^%#@ running out, and we *really need it* for scientific purposes, since it's the only safe, easy way to cool things to, say, 4 Kelvin.

/I suppose one could use liquid hydrogen, too, but that could be... well, that has a lot more ways to go wrong.

If we're running low on helium, the price will rise. If the high price warrants capturing the helium, the gas companies will do so and sell it.

Certain situations warrant government intervention in the market. This is not necessarily one of them.

Are these guys being serious or is this some meta shiat that is over my head? I would find them almost endearing, if it wasn't for the fact that about a quarter America and Canada think that these guys are some rebel truth-tellers. This should be in the weekly world news, not tagged as "interesting" on a news aggregator site.

Now if it were me, I'd do something useful with this resource, like making a garden hose that could set you on fire and put you out at the same time. That would be awesome.

You're an idiot. The free market doesn't have perfect knowledge of situations and bungles it all the time. More often than not, "free markets" lead to the destruction of the commons.

A 1976 study by the Colorado Division of Water found that this area was plagued with gas in the water problems back then. And it was naturally occurring.

This is just like the global warming denier theory. Something happened in the past that was naturally occurring, therefore, humans cannot do the same thing.

If the Venezuelan government financed this film, they may as well have thrown their money out the window. The exploitation by fracking of Marcellus shale here in PA is proceeding apace.

Then isn't the burden of proof on Fox to prove this was caused by fracking in his documentary? Fox got away with his sensationalism because most people don't have experience living in an area with methane seepage.

At least AGW has a proposed mechanism. What is the proposed mechanism that fracking, which is done at least a mile underneath any aquifer, causes methane leakage into drinking water?
