9beers: They better not cancel Alcatraz.

I wanted to like Alcatraz, but it got too formulaic way too quickly. Those get boring, really fast.

Cut the episode count in half, toss the "filler" episodes, focus more on the overarching mystery, and it would have been one hell of a show.

I don't want to see it cancelled, because it's still better than most shows on TV, but it's looking like it's pretty much dead right now.

I almost forgot. You should all be ashamed for missing The River. It was fun and interesting and filled a nice fantasy/horror niche that really isn't represented much in TV.

IMDWalrus: Apos: IMDWalrus:But Lost Girl got renewed again, so YAY CANADA!

It's cheesier than Velveeta-which is part of its charm,I suppose.

It is, but they know it is and they embrace it. The show isn't high art, but I've been watching it on Sci-Fi and I've really enjoyed it.

Lost Girl is my current guilty pleasure.

***SPOILERS***

Though the last episode (with the "Hunger Games" style hunt) got really dumb. So Bo has no less than FIVE people in the woods helping Hale but neither of the other two players bother to pack the forest with toadies? Considering what was at stake you'd think they'd have tried a little harder. That and delivering an adrenaline shot through a leather jacket is kinda stupid. And the whole pining for Dyson thing is getting old. If a spell took his love why aren't they looking for one to put it back??

But as long as it has these two I'll probably keep watching.

mariner314: I'm going to toss out the suggestion that you all try Raising Hope.

I really think this show is in the typical Farkers wheelhouse.

First season is on Netflix instant watch.

Agreed. Raising Hope is probably the funniest show currently on TV. I suspect the reason it isn't more popular is because people who have never seen it think it's a heart-warming family show about raising a baby.

Sabrina and Virgina, trying to get a raccoon out from under the house using a stuffed raccoon toy on a stick:

Sabrina: "So, you're just going to lure him out and trap him humanely?"
Virginia: "Naw. I stuffed a bunch of razor blades in there. He's gonna hump that thing to death."

Glad to see a lot of American Dad love here. Mrs WDS and I both love it. It's far wittier than Family Guy, and without all the stupid flashbacks. I love that they have subtle, repeating jokes (like whenever Stan is seen reading a book, it's something like "How to Read a Book With One Hand"), but they're not beaten to death like Peter fighting the chicken or when he falls and hurts his knee.

Other than Kat Denings' boobs, I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would watch 2 Broke Girls. I've seriously tried to watch that show 3 times now and it is absolutely terrible. I just hope Whitney and Chelsea at least don't return, they're also terrible.

MithrandirBooga: skinink: For the love of Heaven cancel the Office already. That fictional documentary should have been made years ago. The Office became bad when !)Ryan was bought back to work in the office even though he had been publicly arrested in the Dunder office for screwing with the company, 2) Dwight bought the building the office was in yet was allowed to keep his position in the company (no conflict of interest there) and 3) that silly setup of a kid's daycare Dwight had made in some utility room.
It's not that the cast is weak, but the writing is. I don't even think the marriage of Pam and Jim was necessarily bad for the show but they didn't know how to make it work. Although one thing I think is interesting is the rumor that someone at NBC wanted to reboot the show with a whole new cast and different office . Or is that Parks and Recreation?

I don't think the writing is necessarily weak, I think it's that after 8 years they just have no more plot lines that are original. They've done everything already and are picking from the bottom of the barrel. It's time to end it before it gets too embarrassing... ie two years ago. Sigh.

no, the writing's pretty weak. I didn't know it at the time, but Greg Daniels was the head showrunner up through season 4 and then he left for P&R. The show took a really obvious dip in quality in season 5. I pretty much agree with all the points skinink posted, though I should add that not only did Ryan's comeback not really make any sense, he's been an unlikable douchebag since, and not in the way they intended.

I'm amazed 2 Broke Girls is doing as well as it is. The one episode I saw made Whitney look watchable. And what the hell is it with CBS having really dire shows (seriously, look at their list., it's farking terrible!) that seem to be ratings gold?

IMDWalrus: Zombie DJ: Once Upon A Time has filled the void the wife and I had for watching LOST.
Best show on right now.

I'm five or six episodes back (the last one I watched was the one with Grumpy and Whiskey), but it isn't anywhere near Lost in terms of quality. It has gotten better since it started, but there's a lot of wasted potential, too. Once Upon a Time could actually learn from Lost Girl - OUAT takes itself too seriously most of the time. You've got freaking fairy tale characters and magic - the writers could be having a lot more fun than they have so far.

If OUAT did it right, they would probably wander a bit too close to ripping off Fables.

It wouldn't really matter. That's the problem with making a series based on public domain characters.

Great Janitor: meyerkev: Great Janitor: He owns a farming chiropractic business, how the hell can he not afford his own place???

You've clearly never been divorced (twice. And needing to pay alimony to both).

Yeah, I've never been divorced, but, Judith has been married to Herb for several years now, so he's no longer paying her Alimony and Candy got a part on what we can assume is a successful television show, so it's possible he's not paying her alimony. Even as terrible as his divorce lawyer is, any qualified divorce lawyer can go before a judge and say that since the ex-wife is now a highly paid actress on a weekly television series, the alimony payments from him to her should stop, and any judge with any form of common sense would agree. Since Alan has not mentioned paying any form of alimony, we can assume her getting that role on the television series did free him of the alimony.

Eirik: Great Janitor: My thoughts are, The Office is done, end it and move on. A spin off with Dwight would be good.

I suspect that a show centered around him will be... what's the word?... bad. I think the character is too quirky to set a show around.

I agree, but him playing next to a Jim type character would work. And when it comes to the characters on that show, he's really the only decent one. Kelly, Phyills, Stanley and Daryl aren't interesting enough. Same goes with Andy and Erin. Jim and Pam aren't interesting enough on their own. Creed, what we get from him is just enough. Plus, the episode of him as manager is proof that he is great as a background character. So, that leaves us with Ryan, Angela, Oscar, Meridith and Dwight. Well, Ryan hasn't been an interesting character since he was fired and arrested. Actually, he's in need of a fist to the face. Angela couldn't carry a show by herself, and her with Dwight has the same problems as a Jim and Pam only show. Oscar may be the dullest character on the show and Meridith, no one wants to see a show about an ass ugly alcoholic skank.

So the Cheslsea Handler show isn't doing well? Also, how do you trim one sentence to respond to on Android?

I'm aware people watch the show, but my point is I don't understand why they find it entertaining. Usually I can watch a show and say, "well I don't really like it, but I can see why others might," but that show is one of those shows where I scratch my head and think, "people actually think this is funny?" People are allowed to like what they want though.

Although I am also of the mind that Nielson ratings are a bunch of crap and don't accurately reflect most viewers out there. It's just a bad system and it angers me that it drives the television industry.

Your life sounds like it sucks.

Also, Farkers, no love for "Awake"? It's a cable-style show on a big network, and the closest thing on TV to the original "Life on Mars". Yes, sometimes it goes a little too heavy on the police procedural stuff, but it's still great TV.

Because I work ten hours a day and want to come home and enjoy some mindless entertainment every now and then? I love Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, but sometimes I need something stupid like CSI, Criminal Minds, or SVU. How's the air up there on your pedestal by the way?

Wait, do you find Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad a task to sit through? They don't really ask much of the viewer except pay attention, don't read a farking magazine or browse the internet while you're watching. Which I bet is how many people watch CSI.

On another note, in a funny coincidence, Community's Law & Order spoof had Troy and Abed making fun of one-liner cliches like "Why do they always run?".Then I happened to catch a few minutes of NCIS yesterday and they actually used that line.

I can do without this show. It was suppose to be a replacement to Family Guy that was unnecessary after FG came back.

Shut the hell up. AD is awesome. Rapture's Delight is some of the best TV ever made in the universe. And Patrick Stewart as Bullock is hilarious.

That is the exact episode that made me give the show another chance. I think it hits more than FG does now.

Speaking for myself, I found "Game of Thrones" a terrible task to sit through. It struck me as something very much in the same vein as "Deadwood" or "Boardwalk Empire"- more or less absent of plot and instead focused on having characters milling about and bumping into each other. Too many characters, at that. I hate shows with giant casts.

The wife and I love it (and not just for Kat Denning's epic rack) because, except for the horrifyingly bad diner scenes, the treatment of abject poverty and starting a small business are well done. They actually handle issues like finding your customers, market research, and budgeting. Also, unlike most sitcoms about poor twenty-somethings, the apartment is squalid, they both have limited wardrobes, and they seem to spend most of their time working.

/Glad they got rid of the horse. Hope they get rid of the diner.

9beers: So basically, you hate shows that are hugely popular and highly rated because they're too mainstream for a hipster like you.

No. I hate shows that have too many damn characters, because I can't keep track of who is who. Giant ensemble casts are terrible for me. I have to make up my own names for the characters, otherwise I'll never be able to tell who is who and what they're doing.

imgod2u: No, he hates shows that aren't procedurals.

I honestly don't like procedurals that much. I have a soft spot for "Castle". I like "Awake", but wish it would spend muuuuch less time on the procedural parts (the best episodes have only one case, or no case).

"Breaking Bad" is my key counter-example. The cast has grown, but it's grown organically. The episodes remain very plot driven, and don't rely on having the characters bump into each other to drive the drama forward. Instead, someone- usually Walt- takes a distinct action to forward their own agenda, and then things spiral out of control from there.

I know who everyone is and why they're involved in the plot. We don't spend large amount of time in little plot cul de sacs where people deliver dialogue and emote at each other. We don't have extra characters that serve no purpose but to pad out the show's running time.

Carth: Never read the book your mind will explode.

They're not on my todo list. When it comes to fantasy, I'm not really into the sprawling epics. The last series I read that was pure fantasy was Butcher's Codex of Alera- again, tightly plotted (mostly), with clear roles for all of the characters. The cast got large, but did so in such a way that I could keep track of who was doing what and what they wanted.

I'm currently reading the urban-fantasy The Last Call, and I'm somewhat annoyed- the first half of the book fits my tastes in this regard, and then in the second section, a huge raft of characters are all thrown at the reader from nowhere.

It's not.

The hero is a damn Batman villain. It's crazy, she's absolutely remorseless and a sociopath, and its a joy to see her crush people over and over again.
