Wait a minute. A gay couple is discriminating over race? So they've got two kids from different backgrounds. Big deal. What did they want? Bookends?

StrandedInAZ: wademh: So just because you're gay doesn't mean you can't be a racist idiot too.
Makes sense, atheists can be irrational, serial killers can be kind to small animals and politicians can be sincere.

There is a lot of racism within the lesbian community. Yes, I am speaking from experience. You'd think people who've been victims of discrimination wouldn't be prejudiced, but you'd be quite wrong.

My partner has two children from a straight marriage she had prior to coming out. They have red hair and green eyes. She has blond hair and blue eyes. I am black and have black hair and light brown eyes. Guess what? None of that matters. The children are being raised with love from both of us, and her extremely-supportive ex-husband. They'll be healthier than most of the kids out there.

There are two types of people in this world: assholes and non-assholes. The former is the only group against whom I discriminate.

So you're a black, openly gay woman, in a life relationship with another woman, and raising kids. Do conservatives and fundies actually, like, burst into flame when you get too near them? I hope so.

It's about starting a family with offspring that is similar to you. Racial mix-ups undermine that.

If you demand that the people in your life be "similar to you" racially, then you're a farking racist and can go fark yourself with a sparkly raindow--colored fishing pole. And trying to defend it is makes it that much more scummy.

This!
I have 3 children. My oldest is black haired with darker skin.My middle child has light brown hair and is not as dark.My youngest has blonde hair and very fair skin.
They are all fathered by the same man.
I didn't get to pick what I wanted my kids to look like and I think that given the chance I couldn't play God.
This whole thing just gives me the creeps.

Wait, I know this one. Three moms, right? ;)

I never said anything about 'the people in my life need to be similar to me'. If you date someone from a different race and you have a bi-racial baby, well, you went in expecting that and you'll be similar to the kid due to genetics. But 2 white people getting a black/Latino/Asian kid due to IVF? That will put some stress on the child and the family. If you think that expecting a baby and the baby comes out a completely different race isn't distressing to most people, well, you just might be delusional.

There is a reason why step children (amongst others) are more likely to be abused. The lack physical similarity and the lack of family ties makes them more of a 'stranger' and competition for attention and resources to the unrelated party. Especially if both parties bring a child from a previous relationship into the new relationship. Now extrapolate this to a racial mix-up at the IVF clinic causing one of the partners to suddenly be very much disconnected from the child. Does this sound like a recipe for a happy and stable family? No. To relate to the first couple in TFA, they had one child who was similar to partner A and born from partner B. The second child is not similar to partner A, but still born from partner B (assuming the same person went though both pregnancies). The partner ho gave birth to the children is still connected to both of them. The partner who isn't will most likely develop a preference for the child who is similar, neglecting the other child.

The world is not nearly that starkly black and white. It could be racist. It could be a preference, or rooted in embarrassment that they couldn't conceive without donor sperm, or...

It's not "All people are created equal" versus "Let's get our white hoods and some rope" here.

A nightmare that will last forever? Wonderful way of thinking about your children there, lady... I kind of hope she gave them up for adoption or something, because if she raises them, they're going to end up very farked up in the head...

As a parent of racially mixed kids (half asian), I frown upon these shenanigans! There is no problem here on how they view themselves racially, both are bi-lingual and have been blessed with the opportunity to visit with their Japanese side for most of the summer since they were born. The only issue we've had with "race" has been the distance to our families live from us.
If you find someone you truly love, or raise a child you truly love, race should have little bearing on your feelings.

Sounds pretty farking racist to me. A "nightmare"? Really lady?

There is only one solution. Kill both children and start over.
That, or go to the baby store and buy a matching set.
Maybe get a model that matches the upholstery. You must always have your children color coordinated with the house.
I thought EVERYONE knew that.

Only if you keep reminding the kid about how he's so much different than the rest of the family. Treat him with unconditional love and acceptance (which is what you'd expect from a gay couple) and the kid will be just fine.

This.

Wow. I get that she was going through a big shock, but that woman shouldn't be having kids. Imagine being that kid and learning that's what mommy said about you.

"No, no, Jimmy... that was just... uh.. my pet name for you, 'my adorable little nightmare'. You know... like, 'my little scamp', or 'my little rascal', or 'my little demon-spaw--' ok, too far, too far. No, don't cry, sweetie..."

I can see the need for a lawsuit even if they love the kids. If they specifically paid for the same donar and that's not what they got, then the company messed up and should compensate for the mistake.

The lady with the 'never-ending nightmare' should also sue, although that does not excuse her statement. I wonder if she was expecting her husband's sperm though, that would be especially frustrating.

It does suck that there was a mix up and they didn't get same donor for both kids as they had ordered. Siblings that look alike are nice. A cute little cluster of identical faces peering out from Christmas card photos... My children both look a lot like me (and weirdly, like my step-mom too!). So I get the outrage at the screw up. At a restaurant, you get the wrong thing, and you send it back. Wrong item from an online retailer, phone them up and send it back. But here, they can't do that, so what other course do they have to express their displeasure with a screw up by this company?

I didn't see anywhere they said they won't love the kid. It's possible the media might have taken the nightmare quote out of context to make them seem racist... Yeah? The actual 'nightmare,' might be in reference to the stress and added discrimination, but in no way mean that they won't love the child. Possibly?

Nah. The media would never try to slant a story. Nope. Never.

It's not a complaint about the child's race. It's a complaint that their children now have different parentage, which is understandably upsetting.

If their concern were solely about the welfare of the child herself, that would be one thing. Stupid, still, certainly, but not racist in itself. But that was not the impression I got. Rather I got the impression that they were concerned how this would affect themselves.

The very best that can be said for them is that they are idiots.
