If your harness is not hooked to the hang glider, that is a bad thing. And given the solvency of hang glider companies, even a legal settlement is likely to disappear into the wind.

Marcus Aurelius: even a legal settlement

If you're thinking about legal settlements being even a REMOTE possibility, you shouldn't be using that glider. Find one that makes you say "Fark me, but this one's not gonna fail." and use that one.

Personally, as a juror I'd go against the plaintiff in a case where a hang gliding person was injured from civil court because "YOU JUMPED OFF A MOUNTAIN YOU CRAZY fark." is pretty much the epitome of rolling the dice and taking your chances. If you're not ready to accept injury and death, you shouldn't be jumping off mountains. And if you're not 110% sure of the equipment on that very day, you shouldn't be using it at all.

Went ziplining twice down in Costa Rica - the first time, it seemed pretty safe. Two cables, with me attached to one, and my backup harness attached to the other.

If the area is highly wooded, there is a chance she survived (the trees could have broken her fall). However, I would definitely say that the elements and weather patterns would likely have done her in.

The latest reports are saying that the search is focused on the west side of Mount Woodside, which is where they launch the gliders from. It is heavily wooded, and there's also a river between there and the landing field. Unfortunately CTV is also reporting that she fell approximately 300 metres (almost 1,000 feet), which I don't see ending well no matter where she landed.

I can't imagine what an emotional mess her boyfriend must be right now, poor guy.
