Human nature is why games scroll left to right, if not an instinctual means of right to increase, then a learned tendency.

Reading a book and you voyage from left to right.
Got a volume knob or slider? Left to right to increase.
Screws and jars to tighten is to the right in that same manner.
It's the way comics are read, as well as the lion's share of languages.

It's a universal unspoken rule, motion to the right is an increase or progress. Deviation from that pattern is a novelty, or special purpose(as reverse threaded bolts/parts). It's a means of efficiency via keeping things familiar.

Arbitrary or Instinct though?
That's the real question.

slackux: The axis standard came from those displays, which were not invented in Japan. Manufacturing costs then dictated the direction because addition from left to right is computationally (and therefore, actually) cheaper

That's probably the reason, but I doubt it was due to addition being computationally cheaper. It was probably just because x was typically defined positive right, and it felt natural to programmers to have the character run in the positive direction.

By the time the first side-scrollers came into play, I believe even low-end CPUs had circuits for subtraction and didn't have to implement it as separate two's complement and addition cycle. Though I don't know for sure.

So glad to see Rocket Knight. Too many people have not heard of, let alone played, it.
