Video games are the opposite of NASCAR?

The wave of nostalgia that hit me watching that video was palpable. I started boring my wife with details about the games in the video, tossing in anecdotes about some of them.

Prince of Persia spent a lot of time going left from what I remember. The first stage you drop down go all the ay to the left then head back right. Second level starts you going left then you end up back right. My memory get hazier after that but I don't think it fits the overall theme as well as some of the others.

"And there! You have to run to the right faster or else you will die. And then you have to jump to the right or else you will die. After, you continue moving right but wait or else you will die. Then a pixelated boss appears and you stop heading right!"

Damn it, I know that music from somewhere.

Wow, that video was a bona fide three-act story.

So glad to see Rocket Knight. Too many people have not heard of, let alone played, it.

SoundHound says that it's called "A Wild and Distant Shore" by Michael Nyman.

And I don't know why the Silly tag was used. That was actually pretty nifty to watch.

dywed88: So glad to see Rocket Knight. Too many people have not heard of, let alone played, it.

I was hoping to see Dynamite Headdy represented. Sorely underrated/underplayed game.

Still, I saw Quackshot, so that's enough for me.

R Kelly's Doo Doo Butter: Are the Rayman games actually good?

I only played the first game for the PlayStation.

I enjoyed it enough. My only gripe was with the controls. I assume later games fixed this.

Yes.

R Kelly's Doo Doo Butter: Are the Rayman games actually good?

Not only are they good, the most recent is actually GORGEOUS on an hd tv.

Video would have meant more if most of the characters used hadn't also had a good deal of going left up and down as well.

At 2:16 there seems to be some pink and white character fighting a bear. Anybody happen to know the name of that game?

Seeing all those games at once you really get a sense of how incredible some of the game art can be.

Quick, what was the game at 2:07? I recognize it, but I can't remember the got-damn name!

aerojockey: Wow, that video was a bona fide three-act story.

Indeed! But that's sort of the idea behind games as a whole, really; challenge, then victory!

For modern examples I'm kind of disappointed they went with Rayman instead of Odin Sphere or Muramasa.
I wonder if they would ever re-release those in an upscaled version on PS3 or something. As amazing as they looked on the PS2 and Wii, they do not work well on HD screens.

I love games, but could only make it through about 30 seconds of that crap.

Pretty much, but with CSBs attached to each of those sentences. "Man, I remember when I was playing Karateka on an friggin' Apple, and right then, the doorbell rang - and would you believe it, it was a friggin' Girl Scout?"

My wife was "enthralled."

It's a good thing I don't have a wife or I would have bored her to death with the nostalgia run there.

cman: Why was it always right? Why not left? THIS IS AN IMPORTANT QUESTION

possibly a bunch of different reasons for this... most likely it's a throw back to movies and theatre in which motion to the right is indicative of progress or the "good guys." or it could be just a convention set by the first few side-scrollers. the index of the x-coordinate would increase moving left to right so it would make sense to increment the position as the character travels.

also there might be considerations of just human nature. most people are right handed and most people will turn right when they enter a room... that kind of thing.

cman: Why was it always right? Why not left? THIS IS AN IMPORTANT QUESTION

Actually, come to think of it, I wonder why that convention did get started. Japanese is read top down, right to left. You'd think if anything it would have felt "normal" for Super Mario Bros. to scroll left.

For displaying on the old CRT TV screens it meant adding to the position of the background objects and terrain and then only having to subtract a limited number of pixel places if you walked left (about half a byte or so) Remember; computers only add. To subtract you have to use the two's complement binary number and that takes more clock cycles and memory. Multiplying and dividing are just faster ways of doing addition and subtract respectively.

\knows a little Assembler
\\knows a lot of PLC programming that uses limited clock cycles for fast response

Sorry that's all I can add. I am not sure on the others. Surprised you didn't get Braid, it was a pretty landmark XBox 360 arcade game, kind of paving the way for things like Limbo and Fez.

Watching that... I almost feel like I haven't wasted an ungodly amount of time. Almost. Anyway, off to play more video games!

If the game at 1:28 after Zelda 2 is Shinobi, I never played that installment. I'm really curious what that actually is, too; it's an incredibly grotesque death animation.

i'm probably the only one who remembers playing Samurai Warrior: battles of Usagi Yojimbo on the C64.
