Wanker sounds so much better than jerk-off.

But if you wish for us to refer to you as the latter, we will acquiesce to your wishes, Mr. Morgan.

I would also add that Piers Morgan is, in addition to being a wanker, a tosser, a git, a pillock, and generally a barmy arsehole.

I only played FIFA from EA a couple of times but the one thing I remember was the commentator commenting on the snowy weather by saying something like "the snow is snowing...".

If Americans don't know what a wanker is, how did they ever get the joke in Married With Children, where Peg's maiden name is Wanker and she's from Wanker County? That show is so old that children conceived when I first watched are now parents with children of their own. Some of the Wankers in my generation are Married With Children AND grandchildren. Somebody must have gotten the joke in the Eighties, dammit!

Those of us who have been watching Britcoms since Monty Python first aired know what a Wanker is. We've been updated on British slang since before you could say wanker on BBC 4. Those who don't think Monty Python is funny are elderly and still watch The Price is Right after lunch. They may not know what a wanker is.

Speaking of Piers Morgan, who the Hell is this wanker?

Piers Morgan? Sounds like a bank. Is he a banker wanker? Trust Fund Wanker?

Simpsons did it.

Mr. Burns called the British band U2 "wankers" on an airplane flight in "Last Exit to Springfield".

Adam: Look guys, I got a Springfield spoon for my spoon collection!
Bono: Here we go, how many spoons have you got now Adam?
Adam: Nine, if I didn't have my spoons, I'd go insane.
Bono: Can I see it? (Adam hands it over, Bono throws it)
Adam: My spoon! (It hits Mr. Burns on the head)
Mr. Burns: ...Wankers!

There's an even older quotation (Season 11). "Missionary Impossible":

TV: You're watching PBS.
Bart: You're watching PBS?
Homer: Hey, I'm as surprised as you. But I've stumbled across a delicious new comedy about soccer hooligans. If they're not having a go with a bird, they're having a row with a wanker.
Bart: Cheeky!

I'm mean really!

People are always talking crap in the Mutual Transatlantic Misunderstanding Society.

It's been toned down somewhat but is basically a nickname for a ladies very private parts. I assume that's what it means in the US of A as well?

It can really offend some people in the UK but in some circles it's almost a term of endearment.

Back in the 70s we use to hang out in a fairly tough bar. My x-sister in law was a waitress there and although very quiet, was fairly formidable if provoked. I was there one evening with a friend who brought a long some friends of his from either Australia or the UK. One of them used a word towards my sister in law that although in one of those countries was acceptable, it damn sure wasn't here in the US. In less than a minute those guys were spitting blood.

Not a Brit, but Aussie is close enough that I should be able to get this one right ... twat technically means the same thing in both countries, so "your twat" would be interepreted exactly the same, but when used as an insult - "you daft twat!" - it just means idiot, and isn't particularly insulting. It's kind of half-way between "twit" (which has a pretty friendly tone in either country), and "twat" in the US (which has a vulgar tone).

Wanker is has similar multiple meanings. It literally means masturbator, but when used as an insult in the UK, it's very close to the US insult jerk-off, neither of which are really a comment on sexual habits at all. But in Oz, and sometimes in the UK, it also has overtones of pretentiousness, probably closer to the US "douchebag". (See TISM, "whatareya" lyrics: You ever seen a live performance? Join the wanker club, You thought I meant table top dancing? You're a yobbo, bub!)

So in terms of harshness, and how you'd use them, it'd be something like: child who's running around in circles until they get dizzy and fall over = silly twit

FECK YOU SASSENATCH!

2012-04-28 06:10:04 PM
Gah, forgot the "less than" symbol = html.

Let me try that again ...

So in terms of harshness, and how you'd use them, it'd be something like: child who's running around in circles until they get dizzy and fall over = silly twit. Your drunk friend who's threatening a nudie run down the street = daft twat. Smarmy guy who just stole your girlfriend = f'n wanker.

Why the hell anyone would even use such a piece of crap to communicate anything I have no idea. It makes my head hurt to even look at a "feed". It doesn't even quote the original poster when in reply to anything so that you have to go hunt down the Weeners to know what the god damn context of the reply was. screw that.

Yeah, means the same thing here, but here it's extremely offensive. Probably one of the most offensive words in American English, along with "coont" as the filter would put it.

People will drop a cluster F-bomb before using those two words.

The profane term for a woman which may also be a term of endearment in some situations in American English is "biatch", which as I understand it has the same literal meaning of female canine on both sides of the Atlantic.
