Gawdzila: ontariolightning: Those are 5 mins + game in the past .. or are you new to hockey?

Not at all. But I don't think that looked worse than a thousand minor boarding penalties I've seen before *shrug*.

You're a Kings fan so of course you are going to think that was a good call

ontariolightning: Refs really blew that boarding.. should have been a 5 minute powerplay for the Blues.. would have been a different game
Refs won this for Kings

You're right, the Kings might have scored 2 short handed goals.

ontariolightning: Okay if its not punished maybe a Blues needs to do the same to Doughty since
its okay in your book no big deal eh?

I didn't say it was no big deal, and it IS punished. It's a boarding penalty.
But he just pushed him from behind, it didn't at all appear to be especially vicious or with any intent to injure. He didn't even hit him that hard. What's your reason for it being called a Major? The definition of boarding is hitting a player from directly behind into the boards. Do you just think that all boarding penalties should be majors, then?

I'm just asking what makes that one a major compared to any other case of boarding?

And a push from behind is no big deal? You don't push a player from behind who is a foot from the boards.. you just don't do that because that is how you break someones neck

The Blues had their power play chances; the Kings scored on them, though.

They just got outplayed for at least 1.5 periods out of 3, and didn't even come out of the period they DID own with a lead. But yeah, sure -- they lost mostly because they didn't get an extra 3 minutes of PP against one of the best PK teams (who scored the winning goal while the Blues were on the PP). Lol. Riiiight.

You're just repeating with more indignation instead of answering the point I'm trying to make.

Once again... then do you think ALL boarding penalties should be Major/Game penalties? That's certainly a point you could make.
But if not... what is your criteria for making it into one, and is that the same as the criteria the ref's are supposed to use?

I agree that it was dangerous, but boarding is always dangerous. I've seen Kings players get hit like that, and but I don't expect to see any more than a boarding minor out of it. It should be a penalty, and it is. But if you want to punish people differently for the same penalty, there should at least be some criteria by which to do so.

Got to understand that up here in Canada, it's all we'll be seeing on replays for the next couple days. There will be MANY discussions about it everywhere until we hear about what Shanahan says about it. Then we'll all be arguing about his decision about it until the next game. Everything is put under a microscope. You get to turn it off and go about your day knowing it's LA up 1 game.

While he was a few feet from the boards and went in neck first. The refs probably would've seen it better if they saw the LA player with his hands out. He didn't do that, he kept his elbow and hands down then bumped him with his shoulder. While the issue will be how he hit the boards and missed some hockey, in game, the refs can't call things on replay.

All boarding hits deserve 5 mins and an ejection unless the player turns into it at the last second

That's 2 minutes. I don't think it warrants a major.

And no suspension. I don't think it was hard enough to get on Shanahan's radar.

Yes that is right.. and you know as well as I do that we hear how dangerous these plays are all the time.. Don Cherry talks about it all the time
I don't suspect a California hockey fan would hence his reaction that it was just a push

Okay, fair enough. I'd probably agree with that, honestly, but that's just not what the rules say.
The ref's don't generally call penalties based on what they decide someone deserves.

Because the hit wasn't hard enough to warrant it, in addition to the fact that the hit originated sufficiently far away from the boards to be unable to cause much injury.

2012-04-28 10:38:15 PM
And by warrant "it", I mean a major and/or suspension.

I'm only going by your "it was just a push" . Those plays are always given attention here and since hockey is not taken seriously there I can understand why you'd say but it was just a push! they just dont talk about it there

Didn't see that one replay from the other side with the LA dudes arm out.
But it does look more like bad luck. Pietrangelo was trying to turn to keep that slow moving puck along the boards and was pushed at just the right time. You can see his feet are sideways and a split second later, would've been able to squeeze out from under King and get the puck out. King was handcuffed, puck that deep, play the man or the puck?

Looked bad, but I still don't think he'll get any games for it. As for the on ice call... let me see if I can tell where the refs are... yeah I'm not sure he saw that arm come out. 2min is all he probably could've called from his point of view.

I got hit like that once in juniors...I was also playing defense. I had a full face-cage and it STILL split my forehead, nose, and chin. I think I blacked out for a few seconds too. Not fun. Then I had to drive for 3 hours to get home after the game. Talk about being sore the next day!

Kings fan in this series, but dude needs a suspension...one game minimum...two likely.

Well, shiat. I went out tonight, got completely drunk, managed to successfully avoid the final score of the game, and came home hoping to see a Blues win. Just watched the rest on my DVR. Boo. Hopefully St. Louis can even it up in game 2!
