You can't just download ISO standards from a web site. You have to pay a fee, which is typically outrageous. For example, the fee for the standard that 1 means male, 2 means female 0 means "I don't know", and 9 means not applicable (ISO/IEC 5218:2004) costs about $100. Standards like this should all be open source.
Props to Otto Neurath, philosopher, urban planner, internationalist, information design pioneer. I wrote about him for my master's program and came away convinced he was a total intellectual badass, and terribly under-appreciated. That's changing.
