dahmers love zombie: When I was in admin, if I got an application that had BJU, Liberty, Oral Roberts, or my absolute favorite, Florida Christian College (unaccredited), it was a one-way trip to the "no" pile. There would be zero chance that this person would get along with the rest of the people in the division, and hiring one of them would be a one-way ticket to an assured HR complaint alleging religious discrimination.

Not gonna happen.

That's really quite ignorant of you. A lot of the kids who go to those schools do so because it's the only thing their parents will pay for--seriously, parents threaten to cut off all financial support if their kid doesn't go to the school of the parents' choice--but without even bothering to interview an otherwise qualified candidate you toss the resume. There are a lot of people who graduated from those schools who don't agree with the school ideology, either because they never did or because spending four years immersed in that makes them realize just how batshiat it really is, but you'd rather jump to conclusions and pass over people who could very well be an asset to your department. Also, if you're tossing the resumes because of the religious beliefs of the school they went to, you are opening yourself up to charges of religious discrimination big time.

scottydoesntknow: From Link in Article:
10 days before Christopher Peterman was to graduate with a political science degree he was expelled for posting on facebook.

What he posted was a christian song that the school did not agree with. A song written by singer Matthew West.

His other offense was texting during class, he was given 75 demerits which put him over the 150 demerit limit and subsequently expelled. Chris should be given his money back for a semester of forced meetings, and threats that the school put on him.

A) No mention of Glee in this article, makes me question that part (as that would've been a big part to include)
B) If you expect to be treated like an adult, don't attend a university that still goes on a demerit system. Christ I was done with that in middle school.
C) Also, if you expect to be treated like an adult, don't attend a university who's mission is to supress anything not directly related to their goals. You will pay the price.

D) Don't attend a university where 90% of the perks of college life are grounds for immediate expulsion.

I can't help but feel sorry for anyone who goes to BJU. They're either fully immersed in the mythology, or they're trapped by the expectations of their families and churches
I worked in a hospital, and I wound up working with quite a few nurses who got their degrees there. Some of them were the kind of product you'd expect a highly-restrictive religious school to churn out: sheltered and reserved and not very adept at the medical aspect but were quick to offer a prayer or sing a hymn.

And some of them grew up in highly religious communities but had opted out of the hivemind, and were funny, personable, open, and great to work with. Their college experience was a stepping stone towards wider opportunities, not a model for living out the rest of their lives.

The people running the place may be abhorrent, but the students aren't all necessarily closed-minded Jesusbots.

PetraeusWJ: I know religious threads are breeding grounds for trolls, but it's still worth mentioning that Bob Jones != all of Christianity.

You certainly don't have to share my beliefs, but you must realize that with any belief system (Christianity, Islam, Atheism, et al) there are fundies and crazy people who take things to an extreme and beyond. Part of living in a civilized society is having the ability to recognize that the fringe does not always represent the broad base. When you paint an entire culture or sub-culture with the same brush, you are no better than those you're attempting to marginalize.

The more you know...

Except you're wrong.

Even "moderate" christians will tend to oppose allowing gays to marry, support restrictions on reproductive rights, push "intelligent" design into the classrooms, pushing climate change denialism, draconian drug laws, even more draconian laws regarding what constitutes "decency," etc. Christian-lites support and enable the hardcore theocrats that dominate America right now.

Religious people should be laughed at and ridiculed for being the superstitious, gullible fools that they are and the fact that their votes cancels out rational people's votes justifies painting them with the same brush.

Article does a shiat job of telling the real story. Kid went after an asshole who covered up a rapist, BJU went after him.

You know, everyone is crapping on the kid for attending, but I'm willing to bet that he didn't know any better.

A lot of your Bob Jones students are brainwashed homeschooled kool-aid drinkers who get delivered to Bob Jones by their parents. Why else would you go to a place like that? Because you have never been permitted to think critically before.

FTFY

But I can see how you can take the low-hanging fruit. After all, painting all Christians with same broad brush of crazy a-hole is the norm for the internet citizen of the world, these days.

This isn't Evangelical Christianity. This is Legalistic Fundamentalist Baptist. Big difference.

The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves: Doesn't Bob Jones U still prohibit black people? I'm sure they have a Christian justification for that.

They did have a Christian justification for that, but they had a "sudden revelation" that allowed them to conveniently change their policy when they got all that bad publicity in '00 after W.'s visit there.

100 demerits to get expelled. 98 demerits just for getting caught having sex. I might agree with the moral thought behind it, but not the strictness. Students are suppose to learn to make choices and not going to BJU would be one I would back.

/then again, trolls are generally children anyway.

Also cut into advert revenue. That bourbon aint free.

bearcats1983: Where does someone expect to work if they get a degree from this place? If I'm in HR, I immediately "circular file" a resume that has this place listed. Some religious fanatic is one of the last people I'd want in my office.

CREEEEEEEEPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

That's some real Hitler Jugend meets Sea Org stuff going on right there.

So, this is what "living as a Christian" is all about, huh? Stifling conformity, unthinking obedience, and the total surrender of all human dignity.

Uh.....huh.....

I'll think I'll go hang out with the Atheists instead, mm'kay?

Bob Jones University is progressive. In 2000 they lifted their ban on interracial relationships. In another 40 years I am sure they will be tolerant enough to allow people to see the ghey on the radio.
