From Link in Article:
10 days before Christopher Peterman was to graduate with a political science degree he was expelled for posting on facebook.

What he posted was a christian song that the school did not agree with. A song written by singer Matthew West.

His other offense was texting during class, he was given 75 demerits which put him over the 150 demerit limit and subsequently expelled. Chris should be given his money back for a semester of forced meetings, and threats that the school put on him.

A) No mention of Glee in this article, makes me question that part (as that would've been a big part to include)
B) If you expect to be treated like an adult, don't attend a university that still goes on a demerit system. Christ I was done with that in middle school.
C) Also, if you expect to be treated like an adult, don't attend a university who's mission is to supress anything not directly related to their goals. You will pay the price.

- Updating his status to a contemporary christian music song by Matthew West called "Only grace"

Bob Jones University is progressive. In 2000 they lifted their ban on interracial relationships. In another 40 years I am sure they will be tolerant enough to allow people to see the ghey on the radio.

2012-04-28 01:19:50 PM
Umm - this seems perfectly valid to me.

Why the hell would you go out of your way to attend a school that mandates certain values and beliefs when you don't agree with them? Public schools - okay, I understand that. But this? You didn't have to attend Bob Jones University. Presumably, you went exactly because you WANTED those values they encourage.

Then you piss on them and act shocked when they don't like you.

Where does someone expect to work if they get a degree from this place? If I'm in HR, I immediately "circular file" a resume that has this place listed. Some religious fanatic is one of the last people I'd want in my office.

FTA: "He says Bob Jones put a residential assistant in his room to monitor his movements to and from class and campus."

CREEEEEEEEPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

That's some real Hitler Jugend meets Sea Org stuff going on right there.

So, this is what "living as a Christian" is all about, huh? Stifling conformity, unthinking obedience, and the total surrender of all human dignity.

Uh.....huh.....

Mistake #1: Going to Bob Jones University

Seriously, after you make a mistake that big, there's no "making the best of it". Don't even bother. Either get out of there ASAP, or suck it up and get whatever "degree" they confer, valueless though it should rightfully be. Getting kicked out days before graduation = doing it wrong.

/Unless you want to be part of a web story, then he did it right I suppose.

2012-04-28 01:23:36 PM
I have no sympathy for anyone who attends that place. You play with derp, you're gonna get derped.

You'd probably get a better education at Bob Jones Shoes anyway.

I was talking about the petition article about him getting his money back. It only makes mention of the texting and posting of a song. I figured the "Glee" thing would've been included too since it was supposedly a part of the expulsion.

Ironic, given that watching Glee was one of the offenses, that BJU actually has, I'm told, pretty good theater and fine arts programs. True, the only musicals they stage are operas, but they mount some pretty impressive productions.
Stereotypes are stereotypes. While I certainly won't defend BJU's policies, I will say that in my experience their grads aren't all derp-dripping automatons. The smartest and hardest working guy in my graduate physics program the year I started was a BJU grad, so, there's that.

/"smartest and hardest working" in my estimation

Glee? Expulsion was getting off light.

2012-04-28 02:34:05 PM
100 demerits to get expelled. 98 demerits just for getting caught having sex. I might agree with the moral thought behind it, but not the strictness. Students are suppose to learn to make choices and not going to BJU would be one I would back.

2012-04-28 02:35:57 PM
He certainly got an education in politics.

Hyper-authoritarian, hyper-fundamentalists will be hyper-authoritarian, hyper-fundamentalists. It's not like this guy didn't know what he was getting into. The cult manifesto frightening student handbook is available online, and he was presumably given a copy. He had every opportunity to give a "WTF" and back out, maybe to find a less militaristic Christian school if he wanted a Bible-based education.

I don't blame him for being upset, but he should have known better when he chose not to be a robotic follower when that's what the school specifically requires.

BJU is pretty much the same as Liberty, with some nasty racist and anti-Catholic baggage.

When I was in admin, if I got an application that had BJU, Liberty, Oral Roberts, or my absolute favorite, Florida Christian College (unaccredited), it was a one-way trip to the "no" pile. There would be zero chance that this person would get along with the rest of the people in the division, and hiring one of them would be a one-way ticket to an assured HR complaint alleging religious discrimination.

Not gonna happen.

No. It's not accredited. And if you make the mistake of attending then you can kiss your money goodbye as other colleges will not accept transfer credits.

CSB

Young cousin with evangelical family on father's side gets talked into going to BJU, after all Daddy will help pay. Hates it. But can't transfer because 'all that money would be wasted'. Figures he can tough it out. Around year 3 he realizes those odd feelings are exactly what he was afraid of. He really is gay. Well.. he's made it through 3 years following the rules at this place he can get to the end and get that business degree right? Nope. Someone see's him in town with a 'known gay' and reports him. He's expelled. Nearly 4 years.. thousands and thousands of dollars and poof.. he's out. (In more ways than one ;-))

But I can see how you can take the low-hanging fruit. After all, painting all Christians with same broad brush of crazy a-hole is the norm for the internet citizen of the world, these days.

This isn't Evangelical Christianity. This is Legalistic Fundamentalist Baptist. Big difference.

That's really quite ignorant of you. A lot of the kids who go to those schools do so because it's the only thing their parents will pay for--seriously, parents threaten to cut off all financial support if their kid doesn't go to the school of the parents' choice--but without even bothering to interview an otherwise qualified candidate you toss the resume. There are a lot of people who graduated from those schools who don't agree with the school ideology, either because they never did or because spending four years immersed in that makes them realize just how batshiat it really is, but you'd rather jump to conclusions and pass over people who could very well be an asset to your department. Also, if you're tossing the resumes because of the religious beliefs of the school they went to, you are opening yourself up to charges of religious discrimination big time.

When Al Smith was running for president in '28, Bob Jones I said he'd rather see an Attractive and Successful African American in the White House than a Catholic. So I guess he'd be happy about Obama being elected . . .

By the way, this kid didn't get kicked out for watching Glee, Glee was the pretense to kick him out in retaliation for questioning why a pastor who had covered up sexual abuse by a member of his church was still on the board.
