When I think of California I think of hell on earth: deadly heat, constant traffic, and crazy government.

Is Pittsburgh a state or is Alaska a city?

Anywhere in the Valley down there is aboslute crap for air quality, you only have to drive through it and see the haze envelope everything more than a quarter mile or so off the road.

Yeah, having spent time in both states, I'd say Arizona definitely has California beat in terms of both deadly heat and crazy government, though the traffic thing definitely goes to California. But that's only because, despite the California hate on the internet, everybody wants to live here.

I was going to say Houston, Miami, and New Orleans clearly beat L.A. in all three mentioned categories. And for the coast (from the bay area north at least) it's a joke to say "deadly heat".

I'll add my voice to this. Grew up in Porterville; so a shiathole trying to grow up into a bigger shiatehole like it's big brothers Fresno and Bakersfield.

The haze is seriously f-ed up. it's not just smog like in LA, it's also dust from all the farms. Dirt, particles of manure, and pesticides. On clear days, the horizon's beautiful with the Sierra's in the distance, but in the spring and summer, you're lucky to have 1 clear day out of 10.

Also, driving Highway 65 between Porterville and Bakersfield is like fraking Mad Max with orange groves on the sides of the road. Long, endless road with bat-shiat insane drivers and truckers that like to pass on blind curves around the hills.

I don't want to live there, but that's only because there's too many people. I'd consider northern California. Or anywhere but the high desert in California if the state had about 1/10th of its current population.

You should try visiting somewhere other than L.A. Here in the Bay Area we enjoy mild weather year round, little traffic, and, well... ok, crazyish government :-)

Translating for the non-Californians.

'mild weather': The coldest god-damn summers you've ever endured.

'little traffic': Sell your car and buy a BART pass, because you ain't driving anywhere.

'crazyish government': A little yappy dog has more civil liberties, and pays slightly less property taxes, than you.

Long time Bako resident here . . . chiming in with the best news:

There was a recent debacle regarding a land dispute on where the air quality sensors were located. The landowner didn't allow the land to be re-leased under the old terms and they ended up having to move the sensors which resulted in better than usual ratings . . . and we still get the worst in the nation.

I drove down the 99 from Sacramento to Bakersfield. It was like driving into Mordor. Got out for gas and snacks at a gas station. by the time I got back into the car I wanted to kill myself. Drove away fast. Never so happy to see L.A. traffic in my life.

Most of our summers are pretty mild to hot. Certainly not cold unless you count the common Bay Area nightly fog cool-off.

Traffic is terrible if you are a typical commuter. Otherwise it's somewhat meh.

If anything, the little yappy dog is likely to have the same civil liberties as everyone else, but certainly not more. I'm not sure what you were deprived of besides the want for unhindered gun ownership or something.

I believe there is one road that combines many shiatholes that I have to drive on when I'm out there for work. Goes from LA to Riverside to Corona. The 215 is it?
