Nadie_AZ: cman: Does anyone in their right mind foolishly think that Obama of all people could convince the US to have a preemptive strike on Iran?

The only reason Bush got away with Iraq was because of 9/11. No way anyone would have said 'do it' otherwise.

People are tired of offensive wars. Let Iran and Israel square off. Without our money or weapons or man power.

I agree, but there's no way the Jews will have that. Our government panders to them more than the Catholics. Billions of our tax dollars go to help people fight over sand, because HOLOCAUST. Israel's a tough country. They've got F-16s and nukes. They can hold their own. They've done it before and they can do it again. We shouldn't sacrifice our men and women for their war, when we can sell them weapons and achieve the same result.

Gobobo: No way Halliburton et al can justify this without, at least, a little saber rattling now and again. But as to an actual war with Iran - I'm betting against it, this decade. No way the political fallout would be bearable by either party.

Does... does that graph indicate that US military expenditure is almost at WW2 levels or am I reading it wrong?

Here's a fun fact: the German word Kaiser is a early loan word from Latin meaning Caesar. As English is a Germanic language, we also had a form of this in Old English; the word was Kasere. For some strange reason we didnt like it so we reborrowed the word later on and forgot about the original one.

Thank you both. And retire in peace.

1: That graph doesn't seem to account for inflation. 2: A LOT of our military spending is retirement benefits. Pensions and healthcare. I'm too tired to find the breakdown.

It's in adjusted dollars.

And since practically the whole damned country turned into a war machine during WW2, the expenditures during the '40s don't surprise me.

I can only speak for a 1500 member strong unit of the USAF/ANG but we are burnt out. We are tired. The ops tempo over the last 10 years, combined with ancillary training and regular inspections....nobody has had time to stop and take a breath. And we are the AF -shorter deployments, not always on the front lines, but taxing nonetheless, and away from families just the same. Shorter tours, but more of them - I can't imagine how stressed the Army and Marine units are (not to mention the Navy). It is farkin' insane to get us into another engagement right now. We can't afford it and our troops are stretched thin as it is, not to mention the many thousands of damaged young men and women that the VA has to take care of. Armchair warriors/strategists - you just piss me right off. You have no clue what kind of affect the "shock and awe" you long for has on the pawns. You all better just STFU when an influx of Iraq/Afghanistan vets are flooding the $y$tem . You wanted war - to kick A-Rab ass? You didn't sacrifice a damn thing when it was happening - you better put up and shut up when they need our help.

And BTW. My husband was on the very first crew to fly over Libya in a surveillance plane, doing what they do. Clean, swift, no US casualties. As it should be. Well done, leadership.

Um, you are MISSING the whole point. ANOTHER 9/11 WILL HAPPEN. The Zionists will AGAIN use US MILITARY for their
endless wars. Mossad. Their motto: "By deception we shall wage war". Hmmm, how many of Israel's troops EVER WENT TO AFGHANISTAN OR IRAQ???? ZERO. How many of OURS AND ALLIES DIED? LOT'S. Israel will USE US AGAIN. KILLING OUR TROOPS to fight for them.

See, they have figured it out. Have US DIE FOR THEIR WARS.

Well, modern day Germany is what remains of the "Holy Roman Empire". I think Caesar and Kaiser are pronounced the same, so it's just nitpicking over spelling.

My father, a Navy officer of 23 years and Vietnam veteran, has a ratty t-shirt he wears sometimes. On the front is a picture of Vietnam. The caption reads, "Southeast Asian Wargames: 1965-1972. Second Place." I don't think he gets the joke, but I wish I could find him a fresh one to wear.

I began to read the article with Great skepticism. After all Storage Wars is on.

Then with interest as a Gulf War participant I wanted to post.

With usual dismay, I noticed I was way, way, way late.

Usually I wade thru the derp to conclude "not worth my time, neeed the last few units of time" etc.

This time I didn't read the comments - wanted to add this part as QFT -- We have a woefully tiny F-22 fleet," said Gen. Mike Hostage

You may argue we don't need the F-22 cause China blah blah blah blah, but as a denizen in close proximity to a Raptor Base, believe me, they are more invisible due to safety/technical issues rather than magic RAM , advanced design or paint. We gave up half of our hundreds of B-52s and all 40 plus of our F-117s for bout 20 F-22s that seldom take wing.

Modern Wars are cheap.

Social Security, Medicare, Unionized Public Schools, and Obamacare are very expensive.

See how "cheap" modern war really is...

Your website has no comparative counter for Medicare, Medicaid or Social security. Medicare and Medicaid alone were over 800 billion last year. A war in Iran could cost $1 billion/day and still be a far smaller part of the budget than entitlements.

And I will vote for Obama if he commits to a serious war that he intends to win against Iran. This despite him being the worst President ever.

I was a kid when the Iranians now in power held many of our citizens hostage for over a year. This shiz ain't forgotten.

But Obama doesn't have the nuts to commit to that kind of thing so I will be voting for "anybody but Obama".
