TheKillingJoke: Wait, did someone just dare insult Hudson Hawk?

To be fair, I hesitated on that one. I like HH, but most people didn't (according to the box office). Still, better than The Whole 10 yards...

Ah, didn't see the Whole 10... the whole 9 was pretty good IIRC.

roflmaonow: Abner Doon: roflmaonow: It's odd that Nicholas Cage can be a very good actor to watch at times, lord of war, adaptation, kick ass and then absolute turds like wicker man, con-air. How this actor can flip flop so much is perplexing.

Con-air was amusing as hell. If that's your example for one of his worst movies, I think he's doing alright.

I agree about the movie, it was very entertaining and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. His acting on the other hand was corny as heck.

Hmm, okay that's a fair point.

He's a great actor. Unfortunately, he's a moron when it comes to picking his roles.

You mean by choosing ones that pay him a lot of money? I'd scream "how'd it get burned" and "not the bees, not the bees" too if I got paid for it.

JosephFinn: You do realize the Kick Ass movie sucked, right?

While I understand that you were likely unable to enjoy the movie due to your crippling fear of firearms (which were featured prominently within the movie), the majority of the movie-watching populace does not suffer from such an irrational phobia.

Meh. I liked it better when it was the Sunshine theme.

ParagonComplex: I remember when Kickass came out and all that hype that surrounded it. I kept reading about how this movie was going to make huge stars out of McLovin, Cougerboy, and the chick from Let Me In. Yeah, none of that happened. The movie bombed. Maybe this one will do what the first one was supposed to have done.

Bombed?

Yeah. Strange definition of bombed. It cost $30 million and made $96 million at the box office and we are not even talking about the aftermarket.

Wish I could make a film that would bomb like that.

I'm pretty sure he just does whatever he thinks he'll have fun doing. Ghostrider happened because he'd been dying to get into a comic book movie for most of his career.

The thing with Cage is that he's a fantastic actor, but he needs a good director and script to keep him from going full on crazy. If he's saddled with a director who can't control him, or a script that is horrible, he'll just have fun with it.

ParagonComplex: and the chick from Let Me In.

She got "Let Me In" based on her performance in Kick Ass.

Someone asked Michael Cain what prompted Steve Martin to take sub standard roles and his response was:

Steve likes art. Art is expensive.

I suspect something similar is going on with Cage.

gingerjet: I suspect something similar is going on with Cage.

Yeah, but it's probably closer to "Nic is a tacky philistine with bad business sense and a penchant for divorce."

Seeing that Nick Cage's character was killed in the first Kick Ass (and if that's a spoiler, you shouldn't be in this thread), however, doesn't that mean that beeatching about Mr. Cage is kind of pointless?
Even if they do some retrospectives, odds are he'll be in the sequel very little if at all.

2012-04-28 08:42:19 AM
Mr. Cage takes any role because he's dead broke and swimming in debt.

I liked the parts of Kick Ass without the character Kick Ass in it. "My only super power was being invisible to girls." Brilliant.

I really enjoyed the first half hour of it. Something tells me the studio f*cked with it.

Great scene excluding the shiatty southern accent Cage goes in to.

Meh.

I'd rather see a sequel to Super, but it wouldn't be any good without Boltie or Kevin Bacon anyway.

Kick-Ass the movie was a lot of bloody, R-rated fun.

Kick-Ass the comic was kind of over-the-top crudity. I wasn't a fan. Also too nihilistic - screw me for liking happy endings.

Now, has anyone else read Kick-Ass 2? I don't know if it's even filmable. It's almost like he's saying "you thought my first comic was enjoyable and funny? Clearly I must make it even darker.

Brainsick: ladyfortuna: He needs to talk to like, Bruce Willis, or someone close on the spectrum, and get a new agent. That agent should then be paid six figures annually to keep him away from crap movies.

To you I say:

Hudson Hawk !?!?!

I liked Last Man Standing and...um....Striking Distance. I...can't explain that.

I wasn't familiar with the comic when I saw the movie, and I was very pleasantly surprised. I kept halfway expecting Kick-Ass to turn into a bad-ass at the end of the movie, so I was relieved to see he remained pretty much a pussy. Made a lot more sense.

2012-04-28 10:47:48 AM
Hit Girl (Chloe, whatever) kinda reminds me of a young Jodie Foster. She's taking on a alot of very adult roles (not THAT adult, you pervs!) and she's proving herself quite capable of playing more than "Girl Band Member #4"

Striking Distance was a bit bad.

Preferred Nomenclature: They could make a prequel, simply titled "Ass." And that's all it would be, for 90 minutes

It bet it wins eight Oscars, including best screenplay.

I totally forgot that he did the original. Without Kick Ass we wouldn't have had the awesomeness of X-Men: First Class.

Mad_Radhu: TheKillingJoke: The girl who plays Hit Girl always confuses me... makes me feel iffy.

It's like she's too mature to be considered a kid but too young to be considered hot....

I'm right there with you. She similarly makes me just feel awkward because she's on the cusp of being a really attractive young woman. She's like the song "Don't Stand So Close To Me" in human form.

I call that the "you need to go away" condition. After a minute or two you just look at the girl and say "you need to go away now".

/Really, just go, your killin me here....

The man will continue to get roles as long as uncy Ford Coppola lives and breathes.

Can they still make this movie? The girl who plays Hit Girl is freaking huge now (I mean that literally, she's tall as hell).

2012-04-28 01:05:47 PM

ladyfortuna: I will not apologize for liking Nicholas Cage. That said, yeah he's been in some truly awful movies. The only thing I can figure is either he's a blood-relation to his agent, and therefore can't tell the guy no, or else he himself has absolutely no taste and can't turn down a script. Considering his recent issues with financing and real estate, I sort of suspect the latter.

He needs to talk to like, Bruce Willis, or someone close on the spectrum, and get a new agent. That agent should then be paid six figures annually to keep him away from crap movies.

He goes thru money at such an alarming rate that he simply cannot afford to turn down work.

Mad_Radhu: ID4 is actually a pretty solid piece of summer blockbuster filmmaking. Even the virus thing at the end kind of makes sense once you take into account the deleted scenes that explained that Earth computer tech was reverse engineered off of the crashed ship.

still not necessary. The aliens created a bridge to our computer tech to take over our satellites. An alien race who communicated thru telepathy would have no concept of information security so the simplest replicating virus would be devastating to their systems.

Now that you mention it, she does remind me of Jodi Foster in Taxi Driver.

The final confrontation when Kick Ass enters the fray had me laughing so hard I could hardly see through the tears. It was all so absurdly violent, and the choice of music was brilliant.
