virus? what's a virus?

Panther ROCKS

2003-11-03 12:04:58 AM
Yup.

2003-11-03 12:06:24 AM
I can't believe people are bringing up Panther in a buggy software situation. The thing is destroying firewire drives like crazy.

2003-11-03 12:07:12 AM
Best reason to use a mac? Well, they are insanely great, but no viruses!

Prevention tip: Stop using Microsoft's browser (Mozilla.org, Opera.com).

panther ERASED my external firewire drive. fark steve jobs.

2003-11-03 12:10:19 AM
actually this is interesting. google stopped working for me recently, and just displays the google 'o' in the top left hand corner of the screen, and if i go to google.com.au it just displays a weird blue flag in the top left hand corner of the screen. my ISP told me i had qhost, but i d/led symantec's fix and it said i don't have it. it does the same stuff in MoZilla. i've cleared cache and everything...still no change.
Any suggestions?

My firewire drive is doing fine thank you very much.

hang around this thread and I'm sure you will get more suggestions than you ever thought possible ;)

Thats what this fixes, Cancel. I had the same type issue. the fix showed no trojan... I followed the steps here and everything works now.

Are we about to encounter that same feigned braggadocio about how virus-impenetrable my OS vs yours?

Grow up baby boys. Were your OS the dominant one, it would be just as virus laden. I believe all OS's have viruses amongst them.

Oh, and M$ sucks.

2003-11-03 12:14:22 AM
Jeff got it?
I don't feel so bad about having had it some 6 months ago.

Steve Jobs is brilliant. He wrote that line in When Harry met Sally... "I'll have what she's having."!!

absolute gold.

Oh yea, btw, you of course backed up your data like it says to in the insallation instruction, right?

It sucks that you lost data, but If you don't have essential data backed up, you will eventually lose.

Hackers need to be killed.
Or at least need to be given jobs.

2003-11-03 12:17:45 AM
I never get virus's, despite being on Window XP. Good firewall, constantly update, so I managed to avoid them... All but this one, about a month ago. Left me SO pissed off...

you are one lucky sob. no joke, i installed panther and it completely erased 120 gigs of stored audio at my recording studio.

Oh piss off you Linux and Mac zealots. There's nothing wrong with those platforms, but I'm sick of holy wars and sick of holier than thou fanboys who think they are smarter than everyone else because they use them.

2003-11-03 12:21:14 AM
yes enkafan, i am guilty of that as well. i followed all the instructions like a good little mac user, and now all my 17 inch powerbook is good for is a marginally improved mail program and a cool looking gimmick called expose'.

I'm sorry, but that is not a backup. A true backup is not still connected to your computer when you upgrade it. A true backup does not have only one copy.

unmeritedfavor, enkafan,

You guys are kinda making me feel glad that I'm too poort to afford fancy external firewire drives. :)

But I am sorry for your losses.

true security means not having to have more than one "backup" copy. that is ridiculous.

2003-11-03 12:26:13 AM
Yep, there aren't any viruses for Macs or Linux.

None at all.

It's more than most people would do, and well within what most would consider reasonably safe to do. You really don't expect your primary drive to fail/get wiped, let alone a second one.

I suppose you take your multiple, redundant, non-connected backups down to the bank's safety deposit box before upgrading before you start in case the new software causes a circuit to blow, which starts a fire that burns down your house too.

Uhhh, the upgrade isn't wiping the drives. Mac OS is. What good is a freakin' upgrade if you can't use your data.

Sorry I had to break it to you that Mac OS has bugs just like Windows does. Oh, and while we are at it, there is no Santa either.

Old. I removed this from my roomates computer 3 weeks ago.

If macs were as widespread as PCs are now, they'd be the ones with viruses.

Just to be a bit more constructive, here's the Apple story on what's happening:

Apple has identified an issue with external FireWire hard drives using the Oxford 922 bridge chip-set with firmware version 1.02 that can result in the loss of data stored on the disk drive. Apple is working with Oxford Semiconductor and affected drive manufacturers to resolve this issue which resides in the Oxford 922 chip-set.

In the interim, Apple recommends that you do not use these drives. To stop using the drive, you should unmount or eject the disk drive before doing anything else. Please check this web page for further updates.

As someone who has used both Mozilla and Opera, I can sadly say IE is the best choice. Mozilla is bloated and a huge memory hog, and Opera's even worse.

Actually, thats pretty close to what I do. I have an off site backup that is updated weekly, as well as daily onsite backup. It has saved me untold amounts of cash.

Its all a matter of utility. What hacker is going to write a virus that only effects/annoys a small portion of the computers out there? As Stebain said...it makes more sense to go after the dominant OS...which is Windows.

And personally, I'm on an XP system (rock solid so far), and I use IE (because I'm lazy and don't have time to transfer all my bookmarks one by one) and I've never had a problem with viruses. If you update your system and your virus protection you should be fine.

Sorry, don't participate in OS holy wars. Use what you like, I don't care. I can assume by your continuing to preach the Mac mantra that you assume I must be a Windows heathen in desperate need of conversion, but I never actually mentioned what OS (or OSs) I used, did I?

2003-11-03 12:33:29 AM
If linux were as widespread as PCs are now, they'd still have fewer viri because of the root/user permissions... as long as they're used as such, anyway. That's one of the major downfalls of Windows... average users have access to all of the guts of the OS, sometimes just as much as the administrator account.

Sorry if I'm actually participating in an argument, here.

I had this like a month ago, because my Norton Antivirus went on the fritz. I had to get rid of it the old fashioned manual way.

2003-11-03 12:34:54 AM
I've been using Windows for over 10 years, and I've never had a virus. If people would just educate themselves about simple computer security, we wouldn't have these problems.

Mac OS Security flaws announced about a week ago: http://www.macminute.com/2003/10/29/security
Granted, for OS X 10.2.8 and earlier versions. The Apple response so far has been upgrade to Panther, which is looking like a scary situation for some users.

And btw "the third involves a buffer-overflow condition that may be remotely exploitable." All the Mac users can do is basically hope that no hacker is bored enough to target them...

If Linux had to be designed to cater to the average 'tard out there, without having to field a ton of tech-support calls about "why it's asking me for my password," it would have to have all those permissions as well. Similarly, someone knowledgable can more or less keep their Windows box pretty secure.

Even though I consider myself pretty much on top of things, I did get the qhosts virus, way before it was even in any antivirus definitions. I have no clue how it got there, but I have been using Mozilla Firebird more and more, mostly for the tabbed browsing, which I now can't live without.

As for windows having everyone running as admin, yeah, that sucks. Take a look at some of the features of Longhorn though. This is obviously a big problem that Microsoft is trying hard to come up with a solution for that will please the geeks and make sure Mom and Pop don't get hit by a virus.

"Logging on as root" just wouldn't cut it in terms of instructions for my dad to upgrade IE.
