(Science Daily)   New subatomic particle discovered at CERN made up of a combination of quarks that only exist for a fraction of a second before divorcing. Particle tentatively named "The Kardash-ion"   (sciencedaily.com) divider line 69

Great Justice: Unfreakable: Didn't deserve to hide on the Geek tab, bumped to Main for great justice

Thank you! I would have totally missed this in the Geek tab.

Oh, you magnificent bastard!

The comic you linked describes the quantum behavior of a fermion. When you rotate a spin 1/2 particle 360 degrees you do not get back to where you started.

Beat me to it. USB are spin 1/2.

I wish there was a "thread of the year" category. This one is in the 10%.

yeah - I noticed that in those commercials too... But, unless my google effort was weak, that book does not actually exist.

Bhasayate: It's a particle made of up of three smaller particles, two of them that resemble one another, and then a slightly larger one that looks like a wookie.

the bottom quark is indeed quite a bit heavier than the u & s quarks... cheers

=p

On the contrary, it would seem that Kim's bottom is more massive than the other two. Perhaps we need to do more empirical observation.

True, but the picture works for the thread.

Quantum Physics for Dummies
would be more apropos for Ms. Kardashian

Your GoogleFu is weak. The Joy Of Quantum Physics is due out this year.

chi-underscore-b-caret-asterisk?

LaTeX markup: Ξb*

I'm not entirely sure that's an improvement...

Yeah, I saw that... LGT directory of PDFs for each chapter (^)
There's another book by the same name by Arthur W. Wiggis which is already out. I couldn't find a screengrab of that commercial w/ enough resolution too see the author of the book Kim is critically reviewing... cheers

Cyno01: ZAZ: The particle Xi_b^* comprises one "up," one "strange" and one "bottom" quark (usb)

Elusive USB baryon is a strange beast that always seems to have its bottom up..

I get it!

You have Kim Kardashian over to get it in!! (head smack)

(I coulda used this information sooner)

The particle experimentalists have a very clipped language for naming the members of the various baryon families. I'll happily admit I'd simply prefer (qqq) and (qq) since it lets you avoid having to memorize the quark content of every damn name, but it takes more space on paper and time to say "up-down-strange" than "Σ0".

The Ξ indicates this is a cascade baryon with two heavy quarks; The subscripts indicate if any of the heavy ones are not s quarks (c, b, cc, cb, and bb are predicted) and I'm guessing the * means it's in an excited spin state.

I'm not surprised they found something new.
Now, I'm wondering if they'll find what they're looking for...

Now *this* headline / article combination is what made me love FARK in the first place. Lately, the cleverness has been.... lacking.

Well done.
