Nana's Vibrator: Then I wonder why in the US we're at work sun up to sun down getting angry while the US dollar falls behind. Now, I'm no economist, but I should be drinking more.

In the UK we say "Do you want to go for a drink after work?" and then we get shiatfaced.
In the US you say "Do you want to go for drinks?" and then have one drink and go home.

From what I know in the UK, US law firms based in the UK are renowned for working people far harder, far longer than their UK counterparts.

Slaxl: Nana's Vibrator: gmoney101: sfpfc: Since everyone in England get off work at 3pm all involved are on double time.

Not sure if serious.jpg

Teachers maybe

This might be a bit off track, but I currently work for a British company in the US and worked with British expats at my last company. When I ask what it's like working over there, they say on Friday, if they're at the pub at 3 they're already late. I'm sure this isn't the case 100% of the time, but I've heard it more than once.

Then I wonder why in the US we're at work sun up to sun down getting angry while the US dollar falls behind. Now, I'm no economist, but I should be drinking more.

If you're not the first person in the pub after it opens, you're late.

See? And in the time it took me to reply, the Euro just gained on the US Dollar. It's 10:45 AM in Boston, and the bottom drawer is calling me.

my dopey missus told my 5 year old daughter this was happening right next to me.
(well it sort of is)
she rang me up in a that wild panic only a kid can have and bawled down the line for most of the office to hear
'daddy get out there's a bad man coming to get you and I'm calling the police'

\ brought a lump to my throat.
\\ calmed her down eventually

I like this picture tag from the CNN website.

Police have cleared out two busy London blocks to surround one man who is causing a "disturbance."

lol, I can feel the sneer and disdain. Whoever wrote that clearly thinks someone ordered tea and got coffee and said "excuse me, I ordered tea", and the resulting discussion required evacuation of two "blocks" (it's a road, not a block).

Yeah the cops will shoot him. I guess it is like cops everywhere when someone is threatening suicide. Its an easy notch for the cop on his belt. Though the UK probably does not glorify cops killing suspects like the US does.

The questions before a decision like that is made ought to be 1. Is anyone else in danger? and 2. Will taking him out neutralize that danger?

It's pretty hard to get a gun in the UK if you are just a common-or-garden run-of-the-mill mentalist.

"Abby Baafi, 27, the head of training and operations at Advantage, a company which offers HGV courses, described the incident in a video posted online...

"We were in the office and someone came in and we asked him what his name was and he said he was Michael Green. I recognised him because he was one of our previous customers but he's not quite mentally stable.

"He just turned up, strapped up in gasoline cylinders. Basically. he threatened to blow up the office. He said he doesn't care about his life, he doesn't care about anything, he's going to blow up everybody.

"He was specifically looking for me but obviously, I said my name's not Abby and I'm three months pregnant so he let me go."

Miss Baafi said she had lied about the pregnancy just to escape."

Link

I have no idea what a gasoline cylinder is.

Typical lying biatch. If you can't trust a woman to tell you the truth while threatening to kill her, when can you?

/I like that she specified 'three months pregnant' because she doesn't consider herself fat enough to look any further gone.

Quickie googlie puts the US at 311,000,000 population. It would seem plausible to me if you said the US averages more than 6 times the UK rate of fatal police. It would seem plausible to me if you said NYC alone beat the UK's numbers (at 8 mil population)

Throw that chart in there too. Also, protip: Don't point things at the police that could be mistaken for a gun at distance. (yes, I know that there have been some bad shootings where people are going for a wallet etc, but that is such a tiny percentage that it would be statistically irrelevant)

There are two hand guns. One on chest and one on right leg. The thing on the left leg/hip appears to be a magazine for an AR of some sort. The shiny thing at the bottom is the top bullet in the magazine. I don't see the AR though. Perhaps he is on his way to get it from their SWAT vehicle or whatever. There is something behind his right arm though that's confusing. It looks metallic and as though it could be part of an AR of some sort but there is no shoulder strap. Those are the only weapons that I see.

Why are we talking about this again?

Actually, I think the magazines on his hip are what my friends call a 'hate stick' ... i.e. magazine for a small handgun that holds like 300 bullets (I MAY be exaggerating by a bullet or 100 here, but it's pretty darn big). That plus the thing obscured under his arm had me confused at first, too.

Still looks pretty silly.

There's this little thing called a dead man's switch. I dunno if he was pretending to have one or not or if they got a good view of his hands, but it works as a sort of 'reverse' detonation button. As long as it is held down, the shiat doesn't blow. Once he lets go of the button. BOOM. So, this is why it might not be a good idea to shoot a guy in the head who is holding people hostage with a bomb. TMYK

Indeed, when you don't know all of the information about the situation, the last thing you want to do is get all drastic on someone with a bomb. A dead man's switch is as easy to wire as any other switch, and it's not always immediately obvious what the nature of the bomb is just by looking.

Though my gas is he probably did not have a working bomb of any sort. But you can't take that chance.

is that the pattern of what happens when you have a country chock-full of farking guns?

Yes. There are more guns where there are more guns.

trappedspirit: dallylamma: Interesting...since I've recently aced the RCMP mandated fire arms safety course and applied for my Possession and Acquisition License and joined a shooting club earlier this year...but you're right, I probably dislike guns.

Well my theory was that if someone liked guns they were probably better at recognizing them. We put that theory to experimental test.

Not a lifetime 'gun-guy'. I'm relatively new to the sport/hobby.

Pelvic Splanchnic Ganglion: "Home-made" bomb? As opposed to one you bought from the Bomb Store?

It's the UK. You can buy old German bombs at the flea market, charity shops and any number of other places. Heck, you can probably dig a few out of your cellar. Every few months somebody ends up a Fark headline because they tried to make a lamp out of an old shell or an old hand grenade was mistaken for a potato.

The Bomb Store would be a great name for a store. That sells bombs.

The Bombe Store would be a great name for a patisserie or bakery until the FBI or somebody shows up because of a misprint on your business cared or advertising which reads "the Bomb Store".

Remember the Professor from Joseph Conrad's The Secret Agent? Since he happily gave away bombs to every trouble-maker, anarchist or terrorist who wanted to disrupt society, he might be considered the proprietor of an artisanal bomb-making workshop. Ted Kazinzki writ large, so to speak. (Ted was not a maker of home-made bombs, however--he was a maker of artsy-crafty artisinal bombs. Very fine amateur work. Home-made bombs have to be crap or they're arts and crafts. I am not counting truck bombs and the like. They are basically just piles of fertilizer with a primer attached. They may be explosive but they're not art.)

He walked around with a bomb in his pocket in case he met the police. His theory was that if you were willing to die, you were untouchable by anybody who was not willing to die for no good reason, and he proved it in an alley with the Chief of Scotland Yard if I recall correctly.

This guy does sound like an amateur. Propane tanks and the like are flammable but they aren't necessarily explosive. Also, you need more than one to make a proper bomb that would be explosive. And if you want to set off a bomb in London, half-way between the British Museum and Regent Park (more or less) isn't exactly the right place to do it. Tottenham Court Road is practically Bloomsbury, if not Bloomsbury. It's a nice neighbourhood but I don't think it is rich in targets as the US military would put it. And why would a professional bomber throw furniture and office equipment out of the windows? That's not terrorism. It's just an ASBO.

I hope fire fighters are standing by--there's some very nice architecture, small museums, and other cool stuff nearby. Including the Jeremy Bentham Pub, which is a great name for a pub, especially if you can convince the owners of Jeremy Bentham's mummified remains to let you display them once in a while, perhaps on your anniversary of opening, or something.

Some local landmarks from Google Maps:

Goudge Street
Chitty Street
The American Church in London (soup kitchen)
British Pregnancy Advisory Service (they have an advisory service for everything in the UK--very big on giving advice, the British are)
Pollack's Toy Museum (in another street)
Crazy Bear Fitzroy (wine bar downstairs)
Spearmint Rhino (I think I've heard of that one for some reason)
