I know they're talking about the long negotiating process and how it's better to save the life of the suspect, but I can't help but think; get a good sniper and just shoot the farker. He's taken hostages. Threatend to blow everyone up. Just take him out.

This. And if you're going to do it, what are you waiting for? And if you aren't going to do it, put it down already.

Evacuate the area and shoot him in the face.

Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an *earth-shattering* kaboom.

The British have lost their bloodlust. How do they ever expect to retake the Empire without a little indiscriminate slaughter?

Kinda sad, really.

That's not the man taking hostages, it's the man with the keyboard talking through him that's threatening to blow everyone up! Yeesh, doesn't anyone recognize Moriarty's classic setup anymore?

Fabric_Man: The British have lost their bloodlust. How do they ever expect to retake the Empire without a little indiscriminate slaughter?

That's not the British way. We'll take citizens of our 'former' colonies and forge certificates to get them elected to the highest of offices in countries we want to reabsorb back into the Empire.

It's almost certain he doesn't have a real bomb.

A guy with a real bomb would also be carrying a gun or other kind of shooting weapon so he could take several hostages.

But Crazy Larry at Crazy Larry's Crazy Discount Appliances(Prices so low we must be CRAZY!!!!!) has gone a little far with this ad.

"disgruntled employee at the HGV logistics office" ??

Soon to be the UK version of going postal: "going HGV logistic"

When somebody pulled this crap a while back at the headquarters of the discovery channel the local cops tried the whole standoff thing for about 20 minutes then told the dude they were tired of this and were bringing in snipers. The nutbar then started running around and walked right into three officers who got him with their glocks. I see a similar ending coming here.

It says he has `gas canisters', any Brits out there know what that means in British English? Like plastic petrol tanks or gas cylinders full of liquid propane or something?

Alright, things are heating up well before the olympics. This should get interesting by the time they roll around this summer.

It's pretty hard to get a gun in the UK if you are just a common-or-garden run-of-the-mill mentalist.

"Abby Baafi, 27, the head of training and operations at Advantage, a company which offers HGV courses, described the incident in a video posted online...

"We were in the office and someone came in and we asked him what his name was and he said he was Michael Green. I recognised him because he was one of our previous customers but he's not quite mentally stable.

"He just turned up, strapped up in gasoline cylinders. Basically. he threatened to blow up the office. He said he doesn't care about his life, he doesn't care about anything, he's going to blow up everybody.

"He was specifically looking for me but obviously, I said my name's not Abby and I'm three months pregnant so he let me go."

Miss Baafi said she had lied about the pregnancy just to escape."

I have no idea what a gasoline cylinder is.

Ah, yes, very droll. Doesn't apply here though. This guy's threatening innocent people. It's nothing to do with bloodlust or "indiscriminate slaughter". Just about neutralising the threat as soon as possible.

That'll be a canister with a gas inside, under some pressure. It could be any gas although in the UK we call 'natural gas' just 'gas' as the distillate from crude is called 'petrol'.

As they're deemed explosive I'm guessing they're natural gas, especially as these are much easier to get (from camping stores) than canisters full of O2 or H2.

Wouldn't it be awfully hard to get one of those to explode?

Well yes, except that the only witness who has talked about them specifically said "gasoline canisters", even though she was English. Doesn't make any sense to me.

More likely she was wrong-footed by the press and said the wrong thing and he has (as you say) something like canisters of camping gas or something strapped to him, e.g.

what if the sniper misses, then the guy detonates himself in response?

what if the sniper detonates the guy by hitting his bomb?

not as easy as in the movies.

Jonny17: "get a good sniper and just shoot the farker"

Trick is there simply are not that many of these people around and even if you had one you have the problem of where to put them.
Unless the perp is aiming for suicide by cop, they probably are not going to stand still in full view of convenient adjacent windows or roofs.
They'll be moving, they'll have hostages nearby, there'll be trees/awnings/cars/mailboxes spoiling any convenient line of sight, etc. To say nothing of concerns about where the bullet might ricochet or continue traveling to, even if you get a clear line of sight.

So even if you *really really really* want to shoot this guy in the face, you may need to bargain with him for hours until you get a half-decent shot.
And by that time, who knows, you may have actually defused the situation *without* shooting him in the face.

Chinchillazilla: /good for her

Indeed. Just a pity she didn't think fast enough that maybe, just maybe, when you have escaped the clutches of a deranged mad bomber you should go on TV to explain how you have just tricked him........ not when you've just left a load of your colleagues trapped in an office with him.

/Monday morning will be awkward in the office
//hoping that all involved are still around on Monday after a peaceful end to the siege and a couple of beers
///Euston Tap is walking distance from there, although the prices are extortionate....

This is on the corner where I am working right now. Road is closed, people all went to the pub. Gas cylinder- like a propane tank. Hgv- truck... So he didn't get his truck driver license... And therefore is throwing computers and filing cabinets out of the training office window, or making his 'hostages' do this..
