Go Yotes, I guess, if for no other reason than to be able to watch hockey again without having to listen to the announcers rattle on about what minor country star attended a Predators game because it's the in thing to do this week.

The good news is that the most horrible Stanley Cup Final of all-time, Phoenix vs Florida, can not happen.

Plus, Vancouver, Detroit and Ottawa are all out. I'd consider that a pretty damn fine first round.

Caps/Rangers, Flyers/Devils are both going to be awesome series.

All in all, I am pleased.

2012-04-27 09:57:49 AM
Well, shiat... The only team left I can root for without feeling dirty is St. Louis.

Hey, I got edited - it was supposed to be "the eight surviving teams stagger forward once more unto the breach"...

Oh well, I guess the Admin has no love for the Bard nor the meaning behind it. Whatever though, Round Two starts tonight, yea.

If anyone cares, my picks:

NYR/WAS - I'd love to see the Caps take it but the Rags are just too good this year. Rangers in 6
PHI/NJD - Flyers in 5, perhaps even a sweep (of all the series' this one has the most potential for a sweep)

STL/LAK - Blues in 6 .a decent series in the making but going to be completely overshadowed by the other battle out west
NSH/PHX - This will be THE series to watch. Seven games, multiple OT games, etc. A battle not to be missed. In the end I think Nashville will prevail but by no means will it be an easy road (although I'd be just as happy if the Coyotes take it. All in all I think that STL will be representing the West in the Finals only because whoever moves forward from this series is going to be so thrashed that they'll be done for the year.

Regardless, another week+ of great hockey starts in 10 hours.

/it's actually kind of nice not having my team in the playoffs, I can just sit back & enjoy things as they come.

I remember a time when I absolutely despised the Devils. Now I can barely muster a "meh" toward them. I say Flyers in 6, although they should really be able to do it in 5. Rangers I say take the Caps in 7. Nashville and St Louis I take to win their respective series in 5

Why?

Bryzgalov played like ass in four out of the six games versus the Pens. The Devils aren't the offensive threat that the Penguins are, but Bryzgalov vs Brodeur? Give me Brodeur every damn time.

"Not won by the officials" is all I want to see.

Because I just got back from the doctor & am on some serious drugs....

Somewhat seriously though I'd forgotten about Bryz's crappy goaltending (which is surprising as I really like the guy & have been following him relatively closely since his Baby Ducks days (AHL) here in town). Combined with MAF's miserable job in goal & I just removed the P/P series' goaltending from my memory altogether. Combine all that with my general dislike of NJ & you come up with a prediction like the one above. If the space cadet can get his head in the game & play like he's proven that he can in the pressure of the playoffs then things should go well for them.

I'll still stick with the Flyers moving on but now in 5-6 games instead.

Teams remaining by Division

Atlantic - 3
Central - 2
Pacific - 2
Southeast -1

Northeast - 0
Northwest - 0

Conclusion: the North sucks

2012-04-27 12:37:45 PM
I did a brief version of my picks in yesterday's thread, here's the full version:

Devils in 6- Everyone knows of my anti-Bryz bias and you saw why in that series vs the Pens. Ilya the Choker can not do well in pressure situations. If Philly can keep the puck away from Bryz, they have a very good chance of making me wrong here. I just think that Brodeur will be able to hold off that Flyers attack and the Devils will expose Bryz.

Rangers in 6- I can see this going 7. I can see the Caps winning this. But the Rangers are just too good and I don't think Holtby will be able to hold them off.

Blues in 7- The Kings don't have enough offense to get past Elliott (or Halak if he gets in a game). Quick is just really, really good and he'll win them at least 1 game and probably 3. But the guys in front of him will let him down ultimately.

Predators in 7- You know I hate saying this and you know I'm hoping that I'm wrong. But both teams have a similar style (everybody MUST do their job, defense first, takes all 4 lines to have success, etc.) and Nashville just has a bit more talent and I think that will wear the Coyotes down over time.

Well, the only Northwest team that made the playoffs was Vancouver. I think we know now that they really took advantage of a terrible division.

As a MN Wild fan, all I can say is...

*starts openly weeping*

/Also - go Flyers.

2012-04-27 01:35:21 PM
Fun fact:

In the Playoff Day 1 thread, I made the following over/unders:

Number of OT games- 21.5
Number of OT periods (if there's an opening faceoff, it counts as a period)- 25

We are at 16 OT games, 19 periods. At that pace, we could hit 30 OT games and 35 OT periods.

Devils/Flyers - Blood Feud Part I

Devils/Rangers (if everything goes that way) - Blood Feud Part II: THUNDERDOME

I LOVE PLAYOFF HOCKEY! IT NEVER ENDS!

Nashville in 6. They've got enough firepower to overcome phoenix.

2012-04-27 02:30:02 PM
Yeah, I've got to stick with the Preds on this one, hometown hockey or not. Be fun to watch tho. Go Preds!

And tomorrow is my Blues. Halak still out at least two more games. Booooo.

2012-04-27 02:35:09 PM
Preds tonight, got them at -108.

2012-04-27 03:44:04 PM
Phoenix is still the underdog? Okay, go Coyotes.

The last few days have been like molasses waiting for tonight and tomorrow night.

Take 'em out, Predators!

robsul82: Phoenix is still the underdog? Okay, go Coyotes.

Nothing against Phoenix, but I'd say Nashville is clearly the favorite in the series.

Phoenix only has home-ice by virtue of winning their division. Nashville actually had the better record, accumulating more points in a tougher division. Goaltending is a wash (excellent for both teams), but Nashville has better shutdown defensemen and better scoring depth.

Not saying Phoenix can't win, but they have to be considered the underdog.

Yep, agreed, looked up the point totals earlier. And if there's no other issues, "who's the underdog?" basically seals any temporary rooting interest for me, so.

Bummed the Bruins are out. They simply were beat by a better team. Caps were very well coached. Bruins never made adjustments and thee PP killed us.

Oh well, on to round two. I'm pulling for LA, I guess. Huge fan of Dustin Brown. A Bruins jersey would good on him.

2012-04-27 06:30:17 PM
Go Phoenix

/I hope Legwand has a career ending heart attack on the ice tonight
//not because he's a Pred, but since he's a douche (I went to school with him)

2012-04-27 06:34:46 PM
Blues in six (but could see LA in five.... the Kings have an awful lot of talent up front that could come out of hibernation and win this for them).

Preds in five (I just think Nashville has Phoenix beat in every category here. It's close in some, like coaching and goaltending, but the Preds come out on top).

Rangers in five (I don't think the Caps are organized enough to break through the Rangers D, and Holtby isn't going to be able to keep the Rangers at bay).

Philly in six (I think Bryzgalov improves, and Philly has too much offensive depth for the Devils to deal with. And Marty Brodeur isn't the Marty of old.)

Wow, we got a thread early today. Excellent.

Nashville over Yotes (in 5-6 games). Nashville is everything the Coyotes are, but better. I offhandedly can't think of any single category (except Man-games Lost To Suspension) where the Yotes are better than Nashville.

Kings over Blues in 6. Smart money is on the Blues, but I'm holding out hope that LA's offense finally wakes up. There's a scary amount of firepower on that team, combined with excellent goaltending. The Blue have excellent goaltending as well, but not so much potential firepower.

Flyers over Devils in 5. Marty can steal a game, but I don't think he can steal the series when faced with so much offensive talent. Comparing Philly's offense with Florida's is a fool's errand.

Rangers over Capitals in 7. Holtby is going to be a tough nut to crack, but I think the Rags can pull it off. What worries me for the Rangers is that thematically, they're very similar to the team the Capitals just beat. This could go Caps over Rags in 7 just as easily - but I trust Lundqvist as a goalie over Holtby based on his body of work to date.

Finally, thank you to everyone who wished me well when i had to leave last night's thread early. Teh Baby managed to break the side of his crib off the rails, but went face-first to the floor along with it, landing on the metal rail guides with his face. Lacerations and a fairly serious contusion, but the folks at the ER said he didn't have a concussion or internal damage. He's fine now, mostly, though groggy. With any luck, that grogginess will put him unconscious before the game tonight so I can watch it unbothered. I've added "having to miss a Game 7" to The List, so later in life when he wants me to spend time with him or something I'll be able to call this in, sit back, and watch a future hockey game.

Round 2 Predictions - Sure to Be Wildly Inaccurate:

Preds over Coyotes in 7 - This series will feature multiple OT games and multiple suspensions. Weber will serve 1 game for sneezing on Mike Smith. Raffi Torres will be suspended an additional 5 games for retaliatoin when he spits on Weber from the press box. The spit will freeze on the way down and lodge in Weber's left eye causing him to trip and fall on a break away. He will then score the series winning goal on a penalty shot.

Caps over Rangers in 5 - Holtby doesn't realize he's not supposed to have this kind of success this early. 3 shutouts and a one goal game spell the end for New York. Unfortunately Holtby's mask is lost in the post series celebration. Without it he is simply Jim Carrey in round 3.

NJ over Philly in 6 - Bryzgalov's issues continue as Brodeur is the first goalie to register an OT goal in game 5. Philly manages to win the first 2 games when Brodeur undergoes lasik surgery prior to game 1 and Giroux manages to play all 93 minutes of game 2 scoring all 7 of the Flyer goals.

StL over LA in 7 - Speaking of 7 goals, that is all that will be scored in this series. Brian Elliot shows off his new Gandalf mask and declares "NONE SHALL PASS!" Jon Quick is almost as good but finally lets one past him in the 10th overtime of game 7. His only mistake being that he falls asleep halfway through the 9th OT.

2012-04-27 07:29:41 PM
Over/under on total goals in the entire Blues-Kings series: 12

2012-04-27 07:31:21 PM

I'm alright with any team in the west just as long as they win it.

This is my last post in this thread until after tonight's game. Getting ready to hunker down to watch my team in the 2nd round for the 1st time. I can't wait!

Preds fans- I'd say good luck to your team, but I wouldn't mean it. So I'll just say "may all of our players make it through the series uninjured."

GO YOTES!

Recoil Therapy: PHI/NJD - Flyers in 5, perhaps even a sweep (of all the series' this one has the most potential for a sweep)

I tend to agree with you, not just because I'm a Flyers fan and I think the Flyers are the better team, but because the Flyers are rested and the Devils just went to 7 games + 2OT. The Flyers will have more jump in their legs through at least the first two games, and I think that will help them jump on loose pucks and also create odd-man rushes.

I think that Brodeur will have to stand on his head if the Devils are going to have a shot in this series.

There is such a thing as being too rested.. we'll see if Philly starts out slow
but I expect them to come out banging

Briere & Hartnell will be everywhere as usual

I was also really impressed by the way Voracek played on the power play in the first round. He parked himself in the slot and wouldn't let them move him out. He got a lot of chances; it would be nice to see him bury a bunch of them in this round.
